SYADunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park

The 6th annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park will soon be upon us. This year’s festivities will take place from 5 to 11 p.m. on August 16, 17 and 18.

There will be live entertainment each night and lots and lots of food. Selections will include everything from pizza fritta to pasta fagiole.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the Sherwood Youth Association.

Scranton Shakespeare Festival

The Scranton Shakespeare Festival  is presenting its seventh season — an ambitious program featuring two Shakespeare comedies, two musicals, a new devised work, and its annual Youth Theatre Lab piece.

shakesAudiences will have the opportunity to catch all the shows in repertory during the festival’s signature last weekend, July 27 – 29.

Randolph Curtis Rand returns to the festival to direct an abridged, four-person version of Shakespeare’s “Tempest,” double-billed with Brenna Geffers’ devised work “Sycorax,” specially commissioned by the festival and inspired by a character briefly mentioned in “Tempest.” “Tempest/Sycorax” will go on July 6 through July 8, and July 28 at Scranton Prep.

“As You Like It,” directed by festival newcomer Emma Rosa Went, will go up the following weekend, July 13 through July 15, as well as July 29, at Scranton Prep.

The festival’s second musical, “Footloose,” directed by Artistic Director Michael Bradshaw Flynn, will perform July 19 through July 22, and July 29, at Scranton Prep.

The Youth Theatre Lab is set to perform its original adaptation of “Hansel & Gretel” July 7, 14 and 21, at Scranton Prep.

Under the direction of Bobby Temple, SSF will also present “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” on July 27 at The Marketplace at Steamtown.

S.S. Anthony and Rocco Italian Festival

Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 10, 11, and 12, at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds in Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. The Festival opens Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday following the noon mass and procession. Live entertainment will include:

Friday: DHS Marching Units & Cheerleaders and Picture Perfect

Saturday: Holy Cross High School Cheerleaders, Prima Elite Academy of Dance and Popstar Drive

Sunday: Feast Day Mass & Procession at Noon followed by The Luongo Brothers Band, Take Three, and fireworks at 9 p.m.

St. Eulalia’s Summer Picnic

St. Eulalia’s Summer Picnic will be held Friday through Sunday, July 19, 20, and 21, with picnic grounds opening at 6 p.m. on July 19 and 20 and 5 p.m. on July 21. Parking is free.

Music on the Lawn

Lake Winola United Methodist Church will host its 10th annual Music on the Lawn and Craft Fair / Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 10 p.m.. This event will have craft and yard sale vendors throughout the afternoon along with four live Christian musical groups starting at 2 p.m. There will be a chicken BBQ and campfire in the evening, featuring a Christian video over the campfire while roasting marshmallows. Marywood University will hold an undergraduate open house on Saturday, July 14, for high school students and their parents. The program will begin with registration at 9 a.m., in the Fireplace Lounge in the Nazareth Student Center on the University’s campus.

The event will include an informative tour of the campus, as well as the opportunity to meet with current Marywood students, faculty, and coaches. Information sessions with admissions and financial aid counselors will also be available.

Scranton Jazz Festival

Former New York Yankee great Bernie Williams with The Bernie Williams Collective, along with NEA jazz master Delfeayo Marsalis of the legendary Marsalis family, and the multi-Grammy nominated band Special EFX will headline the 14th annual Scranton Jazz Festival on August 3, 4, and 5 at the Historic Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel and numerous downtown Scranton venues.

jazzFriday, Aug. 3, kicks off this year’s festival with Special EFX, a multi-Grammy nominated band, featuring some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz.

On Saturday Aug. 4, four-time World Series MLB Champion Bernie Williams of the New York Yankee’s will take the stage with The Bernie Williams Collective. 

Sunday Aug. 5, will feature New Orleans born jazz trombone master Delfeayo Marsalis performing with the Scranton Jazz Festival Big Band.

Hearing Aid Drive

Marywood University’s Audiology Clinic is accepting used hearing aids at its clinic for those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Audiology Clinic, in the McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, on the University’s campus. Marywood University’s Audiology Clinic will partner with Hearing Aid Charities of America to ship used hearing aid donations at no cost.

All donations are tax deductible through Hearing Aid Charities of America (HACA), and a letter of acknowledgement from HACA will be sent upon receipt. HACA will begin the process of recycling and remanufacturing hearing aids for those in need.

Lackawanna College Police Academy will hold the Protect and Defend 5K Run/Walk in memory of the late Scranton Ptlm. John J. Wilding on Sunday, July 22. The race will begin and end at Courthouse Square, Scranton, with proceeds benefiting the Ptlm. John J Wilding Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Pre-registration costs $25 and day-of registration will cost $30. Participants can pre-register online for the event at runsignup.com/protectdefend5k. Registration will be at 8 a.m. on July 22, and the race will begin at 9:30 a.m.

There will also be a Children’s Fun Run for children under age 12, led by Officer Wilding’s nine-year-old daughter Lola. Additionally, a Pre-Race Day Happy Hour at Backyard Alehouse will be held on Friday, July 20, from 5–7 p.m. Admission for the event is $20, which includes a limited open bar and food.

 

SS. Cyril & Methodius Rummage Sale

The eighth annual rummage sale will be held in the grade school gym of  SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 133 River St., Olyphant, on Sept. 21, 22 and 23. Summer Concerts at Marywood

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department announces summer concerts and performances at the Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre at the Learning Commons. All performances are free and open to the public.

masksOn Sunday, Aug. 12, . at 6:30 p.m., vocalist Nicole Rasmus, accompanied by Marty Ort on piano, will perform a concert featuring a wide range of genres including: standards, jazz, Motown, Broadway, and country music.  In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Fireplace Lounge in the Nazareth Student Center.

Vocalist Chris DiMattio, along with Bill Weber, retired music faculty member at Marywood University, will salute Sinatra on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. DiMattio and Weber return to the stage with a jazz band to recreate their signature performance of A Tribute to Frank Sinatra. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held on the main stage of the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts.

A solo guitar performance will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. Mike Mizwinski, “MiZ,” is a soulful, Rock-Americana artist from Northeast Pennsylvania, who is a well-rounded master of both acoustic and electric guitar. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be held in the Fireplace Lounge in the Nazareth Student Center.

5th Annual Dunmore Summer Festival Set for August 17th through 19th

For months, members of the Sherwood Youth Association have been preparing for the 5th annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park, and finally party time is right around the corner. This year, the festivities will take place from 5 to 11 p.m. on August 17 and 18, and from 4 to 11 p.m. on August 19.

The festival got its start when the borough of Dunmore celebrated its Sesquicentennial back in the summer of 2012. Ever since, the annual event has become a tradition for many in little old Bucktown — a tradition filled with good food and good friends. And the cherry on top is that all that fun benefits a wonderful cause.

“The park’s mission is, and always has been, to keep the children playing,” said Sherwood Youth President Matt Fedor. “The proceeds from the festival will be used to upkeep and improve the park’s facilities.”

Every year, it seems more folks come out to catch up with friends and enjoy a bite to eat. The festival hosts a wide array of vendors, who offer all kinds of sweet, spicy and savory foods.

Villa Maria Restaurant has been a part of the summer festival since it first began five years ago. The American-Italian style eatery is based on Washburn Street in West Scranton, but the business first got its start in little old Dunmore back in 1982.  

Owner Joe Macciocco says he likes coming back to Bucktown each year to pay a visit to those who have helped make his business a success.

“It’s phenomenal. It’s a great time of the year. They raise money for the park, and there’s something for everybody,” said Macciocco.

Members of the Sherwood Youth Association also man a stand, from which they serve up beverages, potato pancakes, wimpies, pizza fritte, fresh-cut french fries, clams and more.

This year, homemade hot wing bites will also be on their menu.

“The success of the festival and the continued improvements at the park would not be possible without the association’s hard-working and faithful members, said Fedor.”  

Members of Keystone UNICO, the Dunmore High School Crimson Company and other non-profit organizations will also be part of the festival.

Another big part of the annual event is the musical entertainment. This year’s line-up features two new-comers and one returning act, who will take the stage at 7 p.m. each night.

Tony Bouselli, Mike Bertha and Dave Arneli make up the band known as Take 3. Together, the rock and roll trio will open the festival on Thursday, August 17.

On Friday, August 18, the Luongo Brothers Band will take the Show Mobile stage. The band features Pat and Nick Luongo, who are founding members of another area band called The Poets, as well as Alan Shields and Rich Marmo. They play a variety of hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The Fabulous Fortunes will return to the Dunmore Summer Festival for the fifth year to close out the festival on Saturday, August 19. The rock group has been performing for decades in Dunmore and beyond.

The Dunmore High School cheerleaders and marching units will also make an appearance at the festival on Friday, and gymnasts with the United Sports Academy will perform Saturday.

“There will also be a bounce house, horseback riding, face painting and lots of games for the kids,” said Fedor. “We hope the community comes out to support our festival and the park.”

Dunmore Summer Festival:

The Sherwood Youth Association will host the fifth annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park on August 17, 18 and 19. The event will be held from 5-11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, August 17 and 18, and from 4-11 p.m. on Saturday, August 19.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Take 3, the Luongo Brothers — featuring Nick, Pat and Alan from The Poets — and Fabulous Fortunes.

Italian Festival:

SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 11, 12, and 13, 2017 at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds, 122 Kurtz St., Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. The Festival opens Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday Following the Noon Mass and Procession.

Live Entertainment: Friday: DHS Marching Units & Cheerleaders and Picture Perfect; Saturday: The Jeffrey James Band; Sunday: Feast Day Mass & Procession at 12 Noon followed by The Luongo Brothers Band, Take Three, and fireworks at 9 p.m.

Lackawanna County Swimming Areas:

The lakes and pool at Lackawanna County’s parks have officially opened and all of the locations are staffed with lifeguards.  The swimming areas are open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the following locations:  McDade Pool, Scranton; Aylesworth Lake, Archbald; Meli-Sarnoski Lake, Carbondale, and Covington Lake, Covington Township, off Route 307. The pool and lakes will remain open through mid-August. For additional information, contact the County’s Parks & Recreation Office at 570-963-6764.

Wine in the Woods:

Elmhurst-Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company will sponsor a Wine in the Woods event on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the company’s picnic grounds, off Route 435 in Elmhurst. Lite fare will be available for purchase. Live entertainment will be provided by Dashboard Mary. Admission is $15 in advance; $20 on event day. A designated driver admission is $5. All attendees must be 21 years old. For information or tickets, call 570-468-4635.

St. Eulalia’s Church Picnic:

St. Eulalia’s Church Festival will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 20, 21 and 22, at the church grounds, 214 Blue Shutters Road, Roaring Brook Township.  Grounds open Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m.; Saturday at 5 p.m. There will be nightly entertainment, as well as a basket raffle, bake sale, children’s games, bingo, Grandma’s Attic, and heavenly food. Parking is free.

St. Ann’s Novena:

The Annual Solemn Novena to Saint Ann being held from July 17-26 at Saint Ann’s Monastery in Scranton, will be broadcast on CTV: Catholic Television of the Diocese of Scranton, Monday through Friday at noon, 3:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.; on Saturday, July 22 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, July 23 at 5 p.m. The Closing Ceremony being held on Wednesday evening, July 26, will air on CTV on Thursday, July 27 at noon, 3:30 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.
