Supporters of Camp Archbald (SoCA) will be hosting the third annual all-volunteer-run resident camp for girls at Camp Archbald, the second-oldest Girl Scout camp in the United States. This year, camp will celebrate 100 years of continuous operation in Northeast Pennsylvania.
Open to all girls going into grades 1-12, resident camp offers a variety of outdoor activities for girls to participate in such as horseback riding, ropes course, swimming, boating and hiking. This summer, girls will have classic activity offerings like arts and crafts, campfires and singing. New for this summer will be programs such as cooking, Harry Potter and our River Rat paddling program. Girls participating in the River Rat program, will spend one week exploring the Susquehanna River. Additionally, for first-time campers, SoCA is offering Taste of Camp, a three-day, two-night experience where girls will be introduced to the many opportunities and activities that Camp Archbald has to offer.
Camp Archbald is currently undergoing a three-year review process that could lead to the camp’s closure or sale. Having consistent attendance at summer resident camp and other camp activities helps to demonstrate the value of Camp Archbald to both Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) and to the wider community.
Camp runs July 12-17 and July 19-24. Girls can attend one or both weeks of camp. Registration is open from now until June 1st at bit.ly/2020socacamp. The 6th annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park will soon be upon us. This year’s festivities will take place from 5 to 11 p.m. on August 16, 17 and 18.
There will be live entertainment each night and lots and lots of food. Selections will include everything from pizza fritta to pasta fagiole.
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the Sherwood Youth Association.
Scranton Shakespeare Festival
The Scranton Shakespeare Festival is presenting its seventh season — an ambitious program featuring two Shakespeare comedies, two musicals, a new devised work, and its annual Youth Theatre Lab piece.
Audiences will have the opportunity to catch all the shows in repertory during the festival’s signature last weekend, July 27 – 29.
Randolph Curtis Rand returns to the festival to direct an abridged, four-person version of Shakespeare’s “Tempest,” double-billed with Brenna Geffers’ devised work “Sycorax,” specially commissioned by the festival and inspired by a character briefly mentioned in “Tempest.” “Tempest/Sycorax” will go on July 6 through July 8, and July 28 at Scranton Prep.
“As You Like It,” directed by festival newcomer Emma Rosa Went, will go up the following weekend, July 13 through July 15, as well as July 29, at Scranton Prep.
The festival’s second musical, “Footloose,” directed by Artistic Director Michael Bradshaw Flynn, will perform July 19 through July 22, and July 29, at Scranton Prep.
The Youth Theatre Lab is set to perform its original adaptation of “Hansel & Gretel” July 7, 14 and 21, at Scranton Prep.
Under the direction of Bobby Temple, SSF will also present “How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” on July 27 at The Marketplace at Steamtown.
S.S. Anthony and Rocco Italian Festival
Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 10, 11, and 12, at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds in Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. Scranton Jazz Festival
Former New York Yankee great Bernie Williams with The Bernie Williams Collective, along with NEA jazz master Delfeayo Marsalis of the legendary Marsalis family, and the multi-Grammy nominated band Special EFX will headline the 14th annual Scranton Jazz Festival on August 3, 4, and 5 at the Historic Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel and numerous downtown Scranton venues.
Friday, Aug. 3, kicks off this year’s festival with Special EFX, a multi-Grammy nominated band, featuring some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz.
On Saturday Aug. 4, four-time World Series MLB Champion Bernie Williams of the New York Yankee’s will take the stage with The Bernie Williams Collective.

Hearing Aid Drive
Marywood University’s Audiology Clinic is accepting used hearing aids at its clinic for those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Audiology Clinic, in the McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, on the University’s campus. Marywood University’s Audiology Clinic will partner with Hearing Aid Charities of America to ship used hearing aid donations at no cost.
All donations are tax deductible through Hearing Aid Charities of America (HACA), and a letter of acknowledgement from HACA will be sent upon receipt. HACA will begin the process of recycling and remanufacturing hearing aids for those in need.

Lackawanna College Police Academy will hold the Protect and Defend 5K Run/Walk in memory of the late Scranton Ptlm. John J. Wilding on Sunday, July 22. The race will begin and end at Courthouse Square, Scranton, with proceeds benefiting the Ptlm. John J Wilding Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department announces summer concerts and performances at the Calabro Delfino Amphitheatre at the Learning Commons. All performances are free and open to the public.
On Sunday, Aug. 12, . at 6:30 p.m., vocalist Nicole Rasmus, accompanied by Marty Ort on piano, will perform a concert featuring a wide range of genres including: standards, jazz, Motown, Broadway, and country music. Vocalist Chris DiMattio, along with Bill Weber, retired music faculty member at Marywood University, will salute Sinatra on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. DiMattio and Weber return to the stage with a jazz band to recreate their signature performance of A Tribute to Frank Sinatra. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held on the main stage of the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts.
A solo guitar performance will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. Mike Mizwinski, “MiZ,” is a soulful, Rock-Americana artist from Northeast Pennsylvania, who is a well-rounded master of both acoustic and electric guitar. Learn to make impressive meals for your friends and family with adult cooking classes offered at Lackawanna College through the Lackawanna College White Apron Academy. Lackawanna’s professional chef instructors will walk learners of all skill levels through the cooking process in a fun, relaxed environment. Along with learning how to cook a meal from scratch, chef instructors will provide trade secrets to food and wine pairing. All classes are BYOB and wine pairing suggestions will be offered for each class.
Adult cooking classes are non-credit and open to the community. Classes will be held at the Lackawanna College Healey Hall kitchen lab, 415 N. Washington Ave., Scranton. Attendees will be standing, cooking, and working for most of the class and must wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and have long hair tied back.

LCEEC Environmental Course
The Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center is offering a three-credit Environmental Quality college course for students who have completed their sophomore year in high school. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., July 23 through 27 and July 30 through Aug. 3, at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center in Covington Township. The cost is $300, which includes textbooks and lab fees.
During this two-week course, students will assess the quality of our local environment to determine the extent and sources of pollution. Through lecture, laboratory activities, and hands-on experience students will review the biological, chemical, hydrological, and ecological aspects of ecosystems, and will explore the complexity of environmental problems. Successful completion of the course earns students three college credits, which can be applied towards a Lackawanna College degree or transferred to another institution.

Pittie Palooza Festival
The Pittie Palozza Festival will be held at Maiolatesi Winery in Scott Township on Saturday, June 9 from noon and 4 p.m.
This annual event is presented by PittieChicks.com and Treasure’s Hope, a 501c3 Animal Welfare Organization and volunteers, along with Maiolatesi Wine Cellars.
It is is NEPA’s only dog-friendly music and wine festival featuring Live Music by Blue London, over 37 wines by Maiolatesi Wine Cellars, rescues, animal welfare groups, vendors, artisans, food trucks and so much more. There will be many adoptable animals in attendance.
Each ticket entitles the bearer to a wine tasting, two glasses of wine, entry to the festival,and a souvenir wine glass for the first 100 people. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance online. Tickets will be $25 at the gate. Designated driver tickets are available at a reduced rate.
