Area organizations benefit from Community Re-Invest program

Seventeen new projects, focusing on youth, recreation, mine and coal history, seniors, safety, skills development, veterans and outdoor improvements to mention a cross section, were approved for funding by the Lackawanna County Commissioners through their Community Re-Invest Program totaling $178,000.

Two Dunmore organizations were included in the funding, including Sherwood Youth Association which received $9,000 from the CRP Program toward a total project cost of $23,258 to upgrade the pavilion at Sherwood Park to include improved lighting, flooring, bathrooms, and additional electric outlets.

Dunmore Historical Association also received $10,000 from the CRP Program toward a total project cost of $12,726 to be used for water control and energy efficiency by installing rain gutter and insulation at the Historical Society Building.

The Community Re-Invest Program was established in July of 2013.  It represents the “last mile” funding to help bring the initiatives to fruition. The overall public-private investment to date is      $2,585,390.     

“This is a great program – community changing.  It has shaped the landscape of our area,” said Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley. “It is vital to give back because these ventures, and others like them, trigger additional growth in Lackawanna County.”               

“Our neighborhoods are the backbone of our area.  This program continues to enhance the overall appearance of our cities and townships, while also creating a variety of economic, recreation and business opportunities,” explained Commissioner Jerry Notarianni.

Cummings.     

“These projects highlight the Commissioners’ commitment to Lackawanna County’s communities, neighborhoods and quality of life.  This program has been vital for leveraging new growth and making “dreams come true,” explained George Kelly, the County’s Director of Economic Development.

Other  projects that were approved during this round of funding include: Greater Carbondale YMCA, Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railway Historical Society in Moscow; Coal Miners Remembered in Blakely Borough; Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority for Laurel Street Trailhead, Archbald; St. Cat’s of Scranton at the Nay Aug Zoo; Olyphant Borough for new sidewalks; Northeast Center for Independent Living, for new computers; Benton Township for bathroom update; Abington Senior Community Center for parking area expansion; Electric City Trolley Association for new wheels; Friends of the Poor for equipment for new facility for Clothes Line for Men program; Jessup Hose Company #2 for construction of building to house equipment; Taylor American Legion Post 306, for renovations to meeting hall; Elmhurst-Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company for backup generator, and Old Forge Sons of Italy for construction of a pavilion over bocce courts.

Projects will continue to be reviewed and funded throughout 2016.  Boroughs, municipalities, townships and nonprofit entities are encouraged to submit applications for projects that are ready to start so that the Community Re-Invest Program can help to successfully complete them.      

 

Sherwood Youth Association’s Annual Halloween Party

The Sherwood Youth Association hosted its annual Halloween party on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Sherwood Park. Kids were treated to pizza and treats as well as entertainment provided by Jojo the Clown. Each child went home with a special goodie bag made by the volunteers, and those who dressed up were also part of a costume contest!

Joe Cardillo, Christopher Fortese and Jake Monelli had this year’s “scariest costumes.” Nicolina Schlesser, Janelle Airwyke and Karina Kent had the “most original costumes.”The winners for “funniest costume” were Beau Borchardt, Ethan Walters and Brett Monelli. Adam Badyrka took the title for “overall best costume.”

Sherwood Youth Prepares for annual summer festival

Dunmore Summer Festival

The Sherwood Park Youth Association is holding its fourth annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park this August 18-19-20.

Robert Plappert is president of the Dunmore Sherwood Youth Association. Matt Fedor is vice president. Mike Ruddy is newly appointed treasurer. Jeanne Jarrow is secretary.

Trish Fedor, a past co-chairperson for the annual event, once again is in charge of the vendors.

“This has been a big success the past three years, and all of the money goes directly back to Sherwood Park,” Fedor said.

The splash pad was a big addition to Sherwood Park last summer. It has become a favorite for local children and even their parents, too.

“This year’s festival will be very similar to the past three years,” said Fedor. “There will be a greater variety of food this year. We are trying to make more of the food on our own. We figure the more we make, then the more funds we raise for the park.”

The event will be held 5 to 11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, August 18-19 and 4 to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 20.

There will be bands starting at 7 p.m. each evening.

The musical entertainment will begin Thursday, August 18, with The Fabulous Fortunes, playing classic rock from the 50s through the 90s. The popular local group has performed several decades in the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area, New York City, New York State and the Pocono Mountains. The well known group has performed at Scranton’s annual La Festa Italiana since its inception and regularly performs at local picnics and fairs and Nay Aug Park. This will be the fourth consecutive year The Fabulous Fortunes performed at the annual festival.

Picture Perfect will perform Friday, August 19. Picture Perfect has been a popular local group for the past couple decades plus performing in various clubs and local picnics and festivals in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas. The group performs music mostly from the 70s to the present. The group is known for its use of various instruments, including horns and percussions.

Blush, featuring Dunmore’s Anthony Duchnowski on bass, will perform Saturday, August 20. A relatively new and young group of talented musicians, Blush performs in local venues, picnics and clubs. Blush performs both classic rock and a current blend of new music. The group has already developed a following.

The list of food items this year will include pizza, porketta, sausage and peppers, pizza fritta, cotton candy, popcorn, chicken barbecue, pasta fagiole, clams, hot dogs, corn, various ethnic foods, delicious baked goods, cake and brownies and drinks. Beer, wine, water and soda will be available.

There will also be rides for children, horse and pony rides, games and various entertainment for all ages to enjoy.

UNICO once again will be a part of the festivities. There will be information on UNICO as in previous years.

“This is an event that brings the people of Dunmore together,” said Fedor. “People look forward to seeing each other, and it helps bring money to the park. It’s a fun event.”

Bob Plappert said the Dunmore Sherwood Youth Association has been busy planning the event, and everyone is ready to go.

“We expect it to be a big success again,” he said. “There will be great entertainment and an even bigger variety of food this year. I know there will be some new and different food added. We are all working hard to make it a success.”
