Breastfeeding Week

Moses Taylor Hospital will participate World Breastfeeding Week which runs Aug. 1-7 by hosting events that promote and support breastfeeding. Activities are planned throughout the week and the public is invited to attend.

Scheduled events include:

  • Aug. 1: A presentation of “Milk” at the Regal Dickson City Stadium 14 & IMAX at 7:30 pm.
  • Aug. 2: A support group will meet on the Lackawanna County Courthouse lawn for a picnic to show solidarity and to bring awareness. Participants are asked to pack a lunch and meet in front of the water fountain.
  • Aug. 3: Lackawanna Recycling will present information related to “Saving the Earth” through breastfeeding from 5-7 pm in the 2 West conference center at Moses Taylor Hospital.
  • Aug. 5: A Breastfeeding Week Fair will be held in the 2 West conference center at Moses Taylor Hospital from 9 am–3 pm. Children’s activities and informational booths will be available.

Marywood Transfer Days

marywoodMarywood University will conduct on-campus Transfer Day programs for college students or former college students considering transferring to Marywood University. In a single visit on Wednesday, Aug. 3, and Tuesday, Aug. 16, between 2-6 p.m., visitors can complete an application for admission, discuss financial aid and scholarship options, and transfer credits. Transfer Day will be held at the Office of University Admissions in the Liberal Arts Center, on the University’s campus. Fall semester classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Wine in the Woods

Tickets are on sale now for a Wine in the Woods Event on Saturday, Aug. 6. The wine-tasting event will be held at the Elmhurst Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company Picnic Grounds from 3 to 8 p.m. Advance ticket price is $15 and day of the event is $20. Designated driver tickets are $5.  Everyone attending must be at least 21 years of age. There will be lite fare for purchase, live entertainment, and a bonfire.

Dunmore’s Angel Night

lanternThe Dunmore community will host “Dunmore’s Angel Night” on Friday, Aug. 12. This event took place last year and was known as “Lanterns for the Lost Princess.”

This paper lantern memorial fundraiser will support the #KelceyStrong and Carissa Dartt scholarship funds. Each lantern costs $5.00 and can be purchased from the Dartt and/or Hallinan families.

On Aug. 12th, all of the lanterns will be sent up into the night sky in memory of Kelcey Hallinan, Carissa Dartt and all of Dunmore’s lost angels.

Gathering places include Dunmore High School and Sherwood Park, but you are welcome to light a lantern from wherever you are.

Parish Italian Festival

Ss. Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 12, 13, and 14 at  at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds, 122 Kurtz St., Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. The festival opens Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday following the Noon Mass and Procession.

Live Entertainment includes, Friday: DHS Marching Units & Cheerleaders and Picture Perfect; Saturday: The Jeffrey James Band; Sunday: Feast Day Mass & Procession at Noon followed by The Luongo Brothers Band, Take Three, and fireworks at 9 p.m.

DHS Class of 1971 Reunionbucks

Dunmore High School Class of 1971 will host its 45th class reunion on Aug. 13 at La Buona Vita, Dunmore. Committee members include Madelyn Muffullo Smith, Mary Ann Occulto Coviello, Beverly Tur Koval, Archie Parker, Jimmy Boccardo, Suzanne Flynn Santarsiero, Cathy Errico Mazur, and Gary Smith. Sacred Heart of Jesus Flea Market

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Peckville, will be holding its annual Summer Flea & Food Fest on August 13-15 in the air-conditioned parish auditorium.  Please come and enjoy the treasure hunt along with delicious homemade ethnic foods from the concession stand. Dunmore Summer Festival

SYAThe Sherwood Youth Association will sponsor the annual Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park in Dunmore. The event will be held from 5-11 p.m. on Thursday and Friday (August 18-19) and from 4-11 p.m. Saturday (August 20). 

This year’s bands, the Fabulous Fortunes, Picture Perfect and Blush, will take the stage at 7 p.m. each evening. Food selections will include everything from pizza fritta to pasta fagiole. Count on a night filled with great entertainment and music for the whole family!

“To Kill a Mockingbird” Auditions

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will hold auditions for its fall production of “To Kill a Mockingbird” at the Black Box Theatre, located in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts, on Friday, Aug. 26, from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, from 1-5 p.m. Auditions are open to the public. Northeast Music Center Guitar Raffle

gp001_logo_5colorNortheast Music Center Inc., Dickson City, a nationally known retailer for electric and acoustic guitars as well as other musical instruments, will raffle off a $4,200 USA made Carlos Santana model guitar in cooperation with Paul Reed Smith Guitar in Maryland. 

The guitar is signed by Santana. Tickets are $10 each or 12 for $100 and can be purchased online through Friday, Sept. 9. The drawing will be held Saturday, Sept. 10.

All proceeds will benefit the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, South Abington Township. The guitar has been hand-signed by Santana.

Flapjack Fundraiser

The Keystone Chapter UNICO will conduct an Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser with “Equines For Freedom” being the primary beneficiary on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8-10 a.m. at Applebee’s at the Viewmont Mall.  “Equines for Freedom” is located at Marley’s Mission and offers horse therapy for veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress disease.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children and  can be purchased by contacting Frank or Mary Ann Coviello at 570-344-3737 or any Keystone UNICO member.  

Rummage Sale in Olyphant

Parishioners of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, met recently to plan the sixth annual rummage sale for September 23, 24 and 25 at St. Cyril’s Grade School, 133 River St., Olyphant. Marywood University Research Project

Marywood University’s Human Physiology Lab is looking for participants in a research study to determine the effects of chlorgenic acid (a component of green coffee beans) and guayusa (a plant-based tea extract) on blood sugar levels. Sherwood Park Spring Carnival

The Sherwood Youth Association will be holding their annual spring carnival May 3 through 7 at Sherwood Park in Dunmore. There will rides, games, food and fun compliments of Midway by A.E.B Amusement. The carnival will be a great gathering for the whole family.

Swingin’ on Vine

The seventh annual Swingin’ On Vine for the Albright Memorial Library is a block party lackawanna-librarythat will take place in front of the Library on the 500 block on Vine St. in downtown Scranton. This year’s event is on Friday, May 27, from 5-8 p.m. and all proceeds benefit the Library. Music will be by Paul LaBelle and The Exact Change, with beer, wine, margaritas,  raffles and food from local businesses and restaurants. Guests must be 21 or older. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Albright Memorial Library, Nancy Kay Holmes Library and the Lackawanna County Children’s Library.

Old Time Fiddlers

The Old Time Fiddlers will appear on Friday, May 6, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Dunmore Presbyterian Church, 137 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Donation is $10 payable at the door. Refreshments will be available. The public is invited.

Italian language hour

SIAMO, The Italian-American Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, will host its next Italian Language Hour on Sunday, May 22, at the Taylor Community Library, 710 S. Main St., Taylor, beginning at 2 p.m.

SIAMO’s Italian Language Hours are designed as practice time for speakers of Italian of all levels, including beginner. Some knowledge of the Italian language is necessary to participate as this is not a class. For more information, visit www.siamonepa.com.

Railriders “Pay It Forward Wednesday”

railridersThe SWB Railriders will host “pay it forward Wednesday” on on June 8 at 6:35 p.m. Proceeds from that night go to In Pursuit Of Grace, a non-profit animal-based community outreach organization providing TNR for feral cats, low cost spay-neuter for dogs, pet food assistance, animal advocacy and education. Leadership Lackawanna

Leadership Lackawanna invites community members to join the #HistoricScranton Core Class of 2016 team at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel, 700 Lackawanna Avenue, Scranton, on First Friday, May 6, from 6 to 9 p.m., to join in the unveiling of their yearlong project. The project is the compilation of all Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB) properties in an online, publicly accessible resource. The event will be free to the public, and will include a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres to enjoy.

Limited edition #‎HistoricScranton t-shirts, featuring a typography map of the addresses of HARB’s historic buildings, will also be available for sale, as well as a coloring table featuring coloring sheets of historical properties in Scranton. There will also be guided walking tours of historic buildings.

Marywood Art Exhibits

GRADUATE MFA EXHIBITION, May 7 – June 3; exhibition features Masters of Fine Arts thesis work of Annmarie Holler in painting and Eva Polizzi in ceramics combining fibers in Mahady Gallery. A reception will be held on Saturday, May 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CLIPPED, RIPPED, AND REASSEMBLED:  New Works in Paper Collage by Pamela M. Parsons will be in the Suraci Gallery through May 8. A little Americana is revealed through repurposed diverse graphic matter, juxtaposing color and image to create new intricate designs and off-beat narratives. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Coal mine tours open

Coal_Mine_4-09_074Local residents and visitors from across the nation and around the globe can journey beneath the earth to catch a glimpse of our area’s rich mining history with the season’s opening of the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour at McDade Park, Scranton. The tour is available Mondays through Sundays  from 10 a.m. to  3 p.m., (with the last tour heading into the mine at 3).  The historic visit of our mining industry lasts for one hour. The mine season runs through Nov. 30.

The fee structure is as follows:  Adults – $10 each; Senior Citizens $9.50; Military personnel – $9; Groups – $8 per person; and Children (three – 12 years of age) – $7.50.  Youngsters under three years old are admitted free. For additional information, contact McDade Park at 570-963-6764.   

March Calendar of Events

UNICO Pig Roast

The Keystone Chapter of UNICO National is sponsoring a Charity Pig Roast as a community fundraiser, with the Voluntary Action Center as the primary beneficiary, on Saturday, April 9, at Fiorelli’s Banquet Facilities, Peckville. Tickets are available for $50 each, and the event is open to the public. This year’s theme is “Denim and Diamonds”.  A suggested choice of attire can be Blue Jeans to Black Tie.  This event will run from 6-10:30 p.m. and will feature a two-hour open bar with hors d’oeuvres during the first hour, and a sumptuous Italian Pig Roast buffet during the second hour. also featured will be raffles, a photo booth; a dance presentation, and entertainment by “E.J. the D.J.” for the entire evening.  Tax deductible sponsorships are available at $100, $50 and $25.  Reservations must be made by April 1, by calling Jim Mack at 570- 342-7975.  For sponsorships, contact Mark McDade at 570-343-7009.

Crimson Company’s Circus McGurkus

Put on your hat, your socks and your shoes or come any-which-way that you choose and join the Dunmore High School Crimson Company for the Circus McGurkus Carnival.

You may come dressed up as your favorite Dr. Seuss or storybook character.

Dr. Seuss storybook characters will be there to greet you. A continental breakfast of assorted pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, milk, and coffee is included in your admission along with lots of fun activites for boys and girls! There will be a story corner, coloring and sticker activity, face painting, goodie bags, crafts, games, basket raffles, and a “Green Eggs” hunt to name just a few of the fun activities we have planned. We will also have a “selfie station” and each attendee will have a FREE professional picture taken by Mr. Rich Banick with our “Seussical” characters!

We hope you can join us on Saturday March 5, 2016 from 10 a.m. until noon  at the Dunmore High School Cafeteria. Admission is $10.00 per person.  

Lenten Concerts

In a 67-year tradition of inspiring prayer and meditation through music, the Catholic Choral Society will present two Lenten concerts. The first concert on Sunday, March 6, will be held at SS.. Peter and Paul Parish Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains, at 3 p.m. Pastor is Rev. John C. Lambert. The second concert will be presented at St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, on Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m. Pastor is Msgr. Neil Van Loon.

Both concerts are open to the public free of charge. Dr. Thomas Rittenhouse and Brenda Grunza are co-presidents of  the Catholic Choral Society. Knee Surgery Seminar

Orthopedic surgeon John Doherty, M.D., will present a free seminar on knee replacement surgery. on Wednesday, March 1, at 5 p.m. at the McGowan Large Conference Room at Regional Hospital, 746 Jefferson Ave., Scranton. Dr. Doherty, a member of the Regional Hospital medical staff, will discuss techniques to help prevent, diagnose and treat arthritis in the knees.

Wind Band Concert

Marywood University’s department of music, theatre, and dance will present the Marywood University Senior Wind Band Celebration on Saturday, March 5, at 7 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. This event is free and open to the public.

Selected high school musicians from throughout the region will meet at Marywood University for two days of instruction from internationally recognized band conductors and clinicians. David Kish, D.M.A., director of bands and associate professor of music at Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Michael Knight, D.M.A., assistant professor of music at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., will lead participants in the Grand Finale Concert.

Marywood Painting Exhibition

Marywood University is presenting a painting exhibition, Narratives Seen,  in the Mahady Gallery, on the first floor of the Shields Center for Visual Arts through April 3, 2016. The exhibition, are free and open to the public.
