Korgeski Earns Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award

Jillian KorgeskiKing’s College senior Jill Korgeski of Dunmore has earned a lot of awards in her four years at the college.

In April, she earned perhaps her biggest award of her career when she was named the 2018-19 Winter Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s indoor track and field by the conference office.

The Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes student-athletes for their strong academic and athletic prowess. It is the most prestigious cumulative award the conference awards and gives equal balance to both academic achievement and athletic excellence.

Korgeski holds a 3.7 cumulative grade-point-average (GPA) as a physician assistant major while also playing on the King’s women’s volleyball team from 2015-2017 and being a member of the women’s outdoor track and field team from 2016-2018.

The Dunmore High School graduate is a six-time Dean’s List selection while also working as a pharmacy technician at CVS pharmacy and a home health aide for Archangel Home Care during her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. She also is a tutor at the college.

“Jill epitomizes what it means to be a successful Student-Athlete.” King’s coach Mike Kolinovsky stated. “She works tirelessly at everything she does. For how great Jill is as a student and as an athlete, she is even a better person.  Jill is very deserving of this award.”

Academically, Korgeski is a three-time (soon to be four) MAC Academic Honor Roll selection and a three-time selection to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. She was named to the MAC All-Academic Team twice in her career and earned CoSida District 4 All-Academic Team honors in 2017. The senior was named to the MAC Sportsmanship Team as a freshman and sophomore.

Jill earned All-America honors in the shot put three times in her career, finishing fifth at the National Championships as a sophomore and junior and sixth as a senior. She qualified for the National Championships all four years in the shot put finishing 15th as a freshman in 2016 and 11th as a junior. Korgeski is a four-time MAC Champion and First Team Selection in the shot put and a four-time honoree on the USTFCCCA All-Mideast Region Team in the shot put. She was named the MAC Field Athlete of the Week eight times in her career and earned another podium finish at the MAC Championships and Second Team honors as a freshman in the weight throw. The senior holds the school record in the shot put and had the best mark in the MAC all four years.

Korgeski is the first student-athlete in program history to earn the Senior Scholar-Athlete award. She has done a lot of firsts for King’s since the track and field program went varsity prior to her freshman year in 2015-16. She was the first Field Athlete of the Week, the first MAC Champion, the first NCAA qualifier, the first All-American, and now the first Senior Scholar-Athlete.

Korgeski and the other MAC Scholar-Athletes will be honored at the MAC Luncheon on May 7 at Alvernia University in Reading.

Artist of the Month: Ruth Boyles

By Ruth Boyles

I started painting at the Dunmore Activity Center about five years ago. Before this time my drawings were stick figures.

I have always been interested in many kinds of artistic things.  My mom, who was a gifted crocheter and embroiderer, tried to encourage me in crocheting and I did cross stitching and knitting, and eventually I did crochet an afghan blanket.

I felt there was an artist inside me that just needed to be taught how.  Dave Smith, a friend from my church who is a wonderful artist, invited me to come to the class at the center. That was about 25 paintings ago.

Jill Swersie has been a wonderful teacher.  She has been a great help–as we work on our paintings, she will ask what we are desiring to do and then help us to get that particular effect.

Jill has also taught us in sketch class how to use various other mediums such as charcoal, pastels, watercolors and acrylics painting on various surfaces.  We have even dabbled in clay sculptures with her leadership.

We have a great time visiting with each other, too, and have developed some lasting friendships with the men and women in the class. We also learn different techniques from each other regarding our painting.

I especially enjoy painting buildings, barns, lighthouses and winter scenes which I will make into Christmas cards. I have donated a painting for a fund-raiser but often give my paintings away to those I know will enjoy them.

I have a few hanging in my home.  It’s fun to look back on the first ones and compare to where I am now.  Many of the folks I paint with have sold their paintings in various shows and First Friday events here in Scranton.  We have also taken part in plein air painting events.
