Actors Circle Presents “Dearly Departed”

Actors Circle will present Dearly Departed by David Botrell and Jesse Jones on Dec. 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15 at Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, Scranton. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.  Sundays at 2 p.m.

Actors Circle brings back this drop-dead funny crowd favorite from 2008. Not since Steel Magnolias has a more colorful and dysfunctional group of Southern eccentrics gathered below the Mason-Dixon line. When the patriarch of the Turpin family keels over, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole clan, including the not-so-grieving widow who wants to put “Mean and Surly” on the tombstone.

Directed by Mark Fryer, members of the cast include: Jeff Ginsberg, Linda C. Griffiths, Kelly Kapacs, Victoria Kusy, Lorrie Loughney, Justin O’Hearn, Bernard M. Ott, Brink Powell, Harry Powell, Tony Ranielli, Marcie Herman Riebe, Cathy Rist Strauch, a native of Dunmore, and Amanda VanBuskirk.

Governor Appoints Marywood President to Pennsylvania Humanities Council Board of Directors

MaryPersico_LACMarywood University’s President, Sister Mary Persico, IHM, Ed.D., was recently elected as the chair of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council’s (PHC) Board of Directors. Sister Mary joined the board in 2017 as an appointee of Governor Tom Wolf, and, in her new role, she succeeds Silas Chamberlin. Governor Wolf reappointed Sister Mary to the board, and her current term will expire in 2023. 

“The PA Humanities Council is energized to move vigorously forward at a time when the humanities speak to every part of the human person in addressing the need for beauty, truth, and purpose in the world,” said Sister Mary Persico. “The new Board members bring great enthusiasm and experience to an already accomplished and dedicated group of directors.”

PHC is governed by a 24-seat board of directors, which includes both elected individuals and governor appointees. Currently, 23 members serve on the board with backgrounds in business, law, education, philanthropy, government, arts, and culture. PHC is an independent nonprofit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is part of a network of 56 state humanities councils that spans the nation and U.S. jurisdictions. 

marywoodSister Mary is the 12th president of Marywood University. Her professional background includes extensive leadership experience. Prior to her presidency, Sister Mary served as executive vice president for Trinity Health, one of the largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems in the nation, where she was a member of a 14-person corporate team and regularly participated in all financial and operational decision making. 

Sister Mary served as the president of the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, from 2002-2010. She also served as the IHM Congregation’s treasurer from 1994-2002. Prior to her presidency at Marywood, she served as the executive vice president of mission integration for Trinity Health, Livonia, MI, and the former Catholic Health East, Newtown Square, Pa. 

She also served in Catholic secondary education as a principal and a teacher. She earned her bachelor’s degree in French and education from Marywood University, her master’s degree in French from Assumption College, Worcester, Mass., and her doctoral degree in educational leadership from Lehigh University.

Dunmore Based Businesses Take Home SAGE Awards

Businesses based in Dunmore were among the winners of the 2019 SAGE Awards (Scranton Awards for Growth and Excellence) announced publicly by The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce at its Chamber Gala at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center. The awards honor outstanding local businesses for their talent, creativity, and innovation. 

The Borough of Dunmore won the Pride and Progress: Exterior Renovations award for the renovation of Schautz Stadium; Penn State Scranton won the Pride and Progress: Interior Renovations award, and FNCB Bank tied with AAA North Penn for the Pride and Progress: New Construction award.

United Sports Academy took home the People’s Choice Award.

More than 100 applications were received. A group of volunteer community leaders and professionals teamed up to review applications and select finalists. The Chamber is proud to honor businesses that are making valuable contributions to the region and contributing to our overall quality of life.  

The other winners, in each category, are: Northeastern Rehabilitation Associates, Best Practices in Community Involvement; Penn Foster, Best Practices in Customer Service; Posture Interactive, Best Practices in Marketing and Communications; Woodloch Resort, Business of the Year; Bedrock Technology, Fastest Growing Company.

Also, Scranton Fringe Festival “Big Gay StorySlam,” Hometown Star; CaPAA of NEPA, LLC, New and Emerging Business of the Year; Discovery MI Preschool, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, and Lavish Body and Home, Small Business of the Year.
