THIS MONTH: Scranton Civic Ballet Presents “The Nutcracker”

Lilly McDonald of Dunmore will perform as the Snow Queen in the Scranton Civic Ballet’s upcoming production of “The Nutcracker.”

Under the artistic direction of Miss Helen Gaus and assistant director Julio Alegria, 80 students and adults, ranging in age from 8 to 75, will share the timeless story of Clara, Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker that unfolds as the delicate Sugar Plum Fairy and all of Tchaikovsky’s musical sprites weave their enchanting spell. 

Tickets for the public performances Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. hosted at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple may be purchased at the Cultural Center Box Office at a cost of $18.50, plus fees. For ticket information, call 570-346-7369.

In the majestic surroundings of the Scranton Cultural Center, the Scranton Civic Ballet Company will present its annual “Eye on Dance” educational performance of “The Nutcracker” on Friday, Dec. 13.

The experience begins at 10 a.m. and will last approximately 1.5 hours. As part of a continuing commitment to education, this school performance will be presented to students at no charge.

Founded in 1978 by Miss Helen Gaus, The Scranton Civic Ballet Company is a non-profit organization focused on dance education and performance. It is the company’s mission to educate our members and the public in the art of dance while bringing the talents of well-known artists, choreographers, and master teachers into Northeast Pennsylvania for our students as well as our audiences.

Damian The Magician Dazzles Students at Dunmore Elementary

The Dunmore Lions Club held its annual benefit show featuring “The Magic of Damian,” Pennsylvania’s foremost magician, at the Dunmore Elementary Center with over 800 students in attendance.

This marks the 27th consecutive year the Lions have featured Damian at Dunmore elementary schools, including St. Mary’s Parochial School. All proceeds will be utilized for scholarships to help defray college expenses for Holy Cross and Dunmore High Schools students.

“Festival of Trees” To Kick Off Dec. 14th

The annual Festival of Trees exhibit and “Toys for Tots” fundraiser will be held at the Marketplace at Steamtown from Dec. 14 – Jan. 12.  The exhibit opens with a Preview Party fundraiser on Friday, Dec. 13. The Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department is currently seeking non-profit organizations, businesses, churches and schools to sponsor and decorate a tree. All funds raised from the trees go directly to “Toys for Tots.”  Participants must supply their own artificial tree. 

This year the event looks to celebrate diversity with the theme Here, There and Everywhere! Celebrating Fall and Winter Traditions from Around the World.

 The cost to sponsor a tree is $50 for non-profits, schools and small businesses (50 or under employees) and $100 for corporations (over 50 employees).  

To register a tree, send checks or money orders, made payable to “Toys for Tots,” to Chris Calvey, Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department, 300 Cliff Street, Scranton, PA 18503.
