The Lackawanna County Commissioners recently proclaimed World Pancreatic Cancer Day in our area to increase awareness about this debilitating disease.

Pancreatic cancer has become the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States with a very small survival rate percentage.  Research for early detention, root causes and effective treatments are the goals of the medical community for helping patients and finding a cure.

Committee members met recently to finalize plans for the 10th Annual Nancy McCormick Volleyball Tournament that will take place on Saturday, May 28, 2016. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Dunmore High School.

The tournament is hosted each year at Dunmore High School during Memorial Day Weekend by a group of family and friends of the late Nancy McCormick.  Nancy was a teacher, loving wife, and mother of five who died from colon cancer.

A portion of proceeds from the tournament supports the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute’s Patient Navigation Program. The Patient Navigation Program helps low income, uninsured, and underinsured individuals in northeast Pennsylvania receive necessary breast, cervical, and colon cancer screenings.

To date, the tournament has raised approximately $30,500 for the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute.  The Cancer Institute invests 100% of its resources locally.
