Holy Cross student earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania is honored to announce Nora Betts, a student at Holy Cross High School, has earned the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award, for the 2023 Gold Award class.

Betts’ project, “Bat Boxes: Installation and Education,” focused on addressing a lack of public education and understanding of the importance of bat populations in our environment.

Betts helped educate others of how bats benefit our environment and worked to eliminate stigmas and fears surrounding bats. To address the issue, she built four bat boxes to give the creatures a safe dwelling and designed an educational sign about bats and bat boxes.

She partnered with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Association to complete the project. Her project’s mission will continue through the sign’s permanent installment along a trail and the sustainability of the bat boxes that can last for decades.

Betts devoted a minimum of 80 hours to problem-solve, plan and implement her ideas for change. The impact of her Gold Award project will be felt long into the future, and Betts has shown the next generation of girls what they are capable of accomplishing.

The Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, available to girls in high school who create sustainable change for a community or world issue. Gold Award Girl Scouts address pressing issues in their communities and create sustainable change to make the world a better place.

The Gold Award process not only enables girls to help their communities, but also provides tangible benefits as they grow as individuals. By going Gold, girls build professional skills, earn scholarships, build their network, and for those interested in serving their country, are able to enlist at a higher pay grade when they join the military.

Dates Set for Summer Camps at Camp Archbald

Camp_Archbald_Lodge_FireplaceSupporters of Camp Archbald (SoCA) will be hosting the third annual all-volunteer-run resident camp for girls at Camp Archbald, the second-oldest Girl Scout camp in the United States. This year, camp will celebrate 100 years of continuous operation in Northeast Pennsylvania.

Open to all girls going into grades 1-12, resident camp offers a variety of outdoor activities for girls to participate in such as horseback riding, ropes course, swimming, boating and hiking. This summer, girls will have classic activity offerings like arts and crafts, campfires and singing. New for this summer will be programs such as cooking, Harry Potter and our River Rat paddling program. Girls participating in the River Rat program, will spend one week exploring the Susquehanna River. Additionally, for first-time campers, SoCA is offering Taste of Camp, a three-day, two-night experience where girls will be introduced to the many opportunities and activities that Camp Archbald has to offer.

Camp Archbald is currently undergoing a three-year review process that could lead to the camp’s closure or sale. Having consistent attendance at summer resident camp and other camp activities helps to demonstrate the value of Camp Archbald to both Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) and to the wider community.

Camp runs July 12-17 and July 19-24. Girls can attend one or both weeks of camp. Registration is open from now until June 1st at bit.ly/2020socacamp. After submitting the registration form, payments can be made online through Venmo or Paypal. Financial aid is also available. A deposit of $25 can secure her spot. More information about camp can be found at supportersofcamparchbald.org/resident-camp/or emailing us directly at residentcampforsoca@gmail.com.

New Group Steps Up to Run Summer Program at Camp Archbald

Summer campCamp Archbald has been offering sleep-away camping to girls for the past 98 years. This semi-rustic camp, located on the shores of the picturesque Lake Ely near Kingsley in Susquehanna County, is steeped in tradition with modern additions – a new dining hall, a water slide, and the immensely popular climbing wall and zip-line.

This summer the Girl Scout council, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, which owns Camp Archbald has decided not to offer resident camp here. The Supporters of Camp Archbald (SoCA), a group of Girl Scouts and camp alumnae, has stepped up to offer one week of resident camp this summer.

Our resident camp is running from July 15- 19 and is open to all girls ages 7 to 17. Costs range from $225 to $275 depending on the program; some financial aid is available and cookie money can be applied. Girls who attend will enjoy activities such as swimming, boating, hiking, campfires, archery, and arts & crafts.

Girls entering 4th grade and up can challenge themselves on the climbing wall and enjoy an exhilarating ride on the zip-line. Girls entering 6th grade and up also get to choose a day-trip off camp, either hiking at Watkins Glen State Park or boating down the Susquehanna River. The best parts about camp will still be for every girl: friendships, independence, new skills, and memories that last a lifetime.
