Cyclist-Awareness-Sign-from-BicycleSigns1-203x300With Winter finally over, the nice weather has ushered in bike season.

It is vitally important for: bicycles to be in tip-top shape; children to have the proper equipment; and drivers and youth to know the rules of biking and the road.

On Saturday, May 13, the Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick M. O’Malley, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. Cummings are hosting the fifth annual bike safety fair and helmet giveaway at McDade Park, Scranton, from 10 AM to Noon.

Three hundred helmets will be given away free-of-charge to the youngsters who attend.   Bike safety talks will be done by local police officials.  A bike rodeo is also planned to help the youngsters learn how to navigate in all kinds of weather and terrain.

PNC Bank is the presenting sponsor.  Other sponsors are: Strive Multisport, Gerrity’s Supermarkets and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders.

The County is coordinating a helmet design competition once again.  Youngsters can go to the County’s website. print-off a blank helmet and then let their imaginations run wild.  Helmet design sheets are also available at Gerrity’s Supermarkets, Strive Multisport on Cedar Avenue, Scranton, and the Railriders offices.

The designs will be judged and one boy and girl will win a bike, provided by Strive.  A drawing for another bike will be conducted the day of the fair.

The coloring competition is open to all public school districts and private schools throughout Lackawanna County along with the general public.

All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, May 10.  They should be mailed to the Lackawanna County Commissioners Office, 200 Adams Avenue, Sixth Floor, Scranton, PA 18503.

In order to receive a helmet at the fair, the youngsters will be required to attend a brief bike safety talk.  When the presentation is complete, the children will be able to pick-up a helmet.

There will be several fun activities, child finger printing by the District Attorney’s Office, face painting and giveaways. Hot dogs will be served, compliments of Gerrity’s Supermarkets.

The Lackawanna County Commissioners presented a proclamation to Jimmy Brozzetti, Dunmore, for his unselfish and life-long commitment to helping children and area youth organizations.  An avid New York Yankees fan, Brozzetti has worked with the team to coordinate several fundraisers to support area service organizations involved in improving the quality of life of our County’s youngsters.  He was a driving force in the Legends Game at PNC Field, the KRW Foundation’s “Party With The Pros,” and the development of Strawberry Field in Peckville.

Commissioners organize holiday food drive

In the spirit of giving and sharing with others, the Lackawanna County Commissioners are organizing a system-wide food drive in order to stock local food pantries to help residents enjoy a traditional holiday season dinner with their families.

“This is a great opportunity for the County’s staff to help others.  There is great need in our community.  Many families are going through some difficult times,” said Commissioner Jim Wansacz.  “This drive will help them in a small way to enjoy the holidays and worry a little less about the issues impacting their lives.”

“This is all about taking care of others in their time of need.  It is also important that we care for our children and not let them go hungry during the holidays,” explained Commissioner Patrick M. O’Malley.  “Our employees have much to be grateful for, and we are asking them to share a little bit with others.”

“This is a difficult time of year for many as the cold and winter sets in.  This is our way of helping people get back on their feet and enjoy a holiday dinner with their families without any additional worries,” noted Commissioner Edward G. Staback.  “The drive represents a great way to share the holiday spirit with the less fortunate of our community and to grasp the true meaning of the season.”

The drive will run from now to Dec. 18 with containers being placed on the floors or vestibules of all County offices in central city, greater Scranton, Mayfield and Jessup along with the Airport, COLTS and the Visitors Bureau.

County employees and residents are asked to bring in non-perishable canned fruits, vegetables and sauces, coffee, tea, rice, pasta, stuffing, potatoes, soup, peanut butter, condiments, cookies, crackers, or snacks to drop-off in the containers.

The bins will be checked and emptied by the County’s Buildings & Grounds Department and stored in one central location for distribution before Christmas.

Once the drive is over, the goods will be divided-up according to the food categories that were donated.  The food will then be delivered to area organizations, pantries, shelters, disaster relief agencies, emergency and food assistance spots, church groups, schools, voucher programs, soup kitchens, rescue missions, and community centers throughout the County for these operations to use or distribute to their clients.
