The Double “R” Twirlettes have been well represented this football season as 19 group members twirl with six different high school band. Among the group is Angelica Plappert, who is Miss Buck at Dunmore High School. The girls are all students of Kathleen Y. Mercatili, director of the Double “R” Twirlettes.

La Cucina Restaurant, 600 South Blakely St., Dunmore, has been favorite local dining spot for 35 years and counting.
And now the popular Dunmore restaurant has a whole new look to go with its traditional Italian-American menu.
Anne Lepri and her sons Paulo and Francesco Lepri are the owners of the long-time establishment which began in 1980 on Mortimer Street in Dunmore.
The late Luciano Lepri, who died in 2006, was the original owner along with his wife Anne. Anne and her sons have continued with the business since Luciano’s passing.
The establishment was located on Mortimer Street from 1980 through 1993 before moving to the Scranton-Carbondale Highway from 1994 through 1998. La Cucina has been at its current Dunmore location since 1999 after the old Gallagher’s Bar and Restaurant was sold to the Lepri family.
La Cucina is open for lunch Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is open for supper Tuesday through Saturday, from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
“We feature an Italian-American menu, but mostly Italian,” said Paul Lepri. “We have all kinds of salads and pasta and appetizers. Our lunch menu is mostly salads, sandwiches and soups. We have a nice bar area with top shelf liquor and six rotating draft beers. We have a nice outdoor patio area in the summer.”
The new dining room at La Cucina boasts a sleeker and more modern style.
Besides the great menu, La Cucina now has a more appealing, modern look which catches the customer’s eyes. “We did a total renovation here,” said Lepri. “It’s a total transformation. We gutted the place and put in all new stairs,carpeting and a brand new bar. The back section is the restaurant now.The brand new bar is in the dining area. Everything is new.”
La Cucina, with its salads, appetizers, chicken, pork chops and home made pasta dishe, has been known for its class and hospitality for years, but now it has a totally different look.
“There are now several high top tables in the new bar area. The wall separates the dining room from the bar area. We still have two private dining rooms which are updated. It’s a totally new look. We felt after all these years it was time for a change.
“The bar sink is the only item we brought in from the old bar. Everything else in the bar is brand new, even the glasses.
“We are also branching out to bottling our in house salad dressings. Customers can purchase the bottles here at La Cucina or at several local markets.” Those markets include Domaand Riccardo’s in Dunmore, the two local Quinn’s Markets in Archbald and Peckville, and three of the local Gerrity’s Markets.
The prices are modest for the great food. Lunch prices range from $7 to $10. Supper ranges from $17 to $28.
So the menu and prices have not changed. Only the look.
There are all brand new tables and chairs and a solid oak bar. There is a brand new draft system with the six rotating beers. Peroni, Coors Light and Lager are the standards. There is seasonal Sam Adams and currently Stella Artoris and New Belgium Flat Tire.
“There are new floors, carpeting, chairs, and even paint. It’s a complete turn around. It’s a semi modern, updated family atmosphere. It’s the same menu with a new look.”
Some customers have gone as far as to call it “New York style.”
At any rate, it is quite appealing, a great place for a date or to take the whole family, and still a staple in Dunmore.”Also, our outdoor patio was much busier this past summer. We have a full outdoor bar at the patio area,”Lepri added.
The delicious Italian dishes are well known throughout the region.
