Cyclist-Awareness-Sign-from-BicycleSigns1-203x300With Winter finally over, the nice weather has ushered in bike season.

It is vitally important for: bicycles to be in tip-top shape; children to have the proper equipment; and drivers and youth to know the rules of biking and the road.

On Saturday, May 13, the Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick M. O’Malley, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. Cummings are hosting the fifth annual bike safety fair and helmet giveaway at McDade Park, Scranton, from 10 AM to Noon.

Three hundred helmets will be given away free-of-charge to the youngsters who attend.   Bike safety talks will be done by local police officials.  A bike rodeo is also planned to help the youngsters learn how to navigate in all kinds of weather and terrain.

PNC Bank is the presenting sponsor.  Other sponsors are: Strive Multisport, Gerrity’s Supermarkets and the Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders.

The County is coordinating a helmet design competition once again.  Youngsters can go to the County’s website. print-off a blank helmet and then let their imaginations run wild.  Helmet design sheets are also available at Gerrity’s Supermarkets, Strive Multisport on Cedar Avenue, Scranton, and the Railriders offices.

The designs will be judged and one boy and girl will win a bike, provided by Strive.  A drawing for another bike will be conducted the day of the fair.

The coloring competition is open to all public school districts and private schools throughout Lackawanna County along with the general public.

All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, May 10.  They should be mailed to the Lackawanna County Commissioners Office, 200 Adams Avenue, Sixth Floor, Scranton, PA 18503.

In order to receive a helmet at the fair, the youngsters will be required to attend a brief bike safety talk.  When the presentation is complete, the children will be able to pick-up a helmet.

There will be several fun activities, child finger printing by the District Attorney’s Office, face painting and giveaways. Hot dogs will be served, compliments of Gerrity’s Supermarkets.
