everhart-john-wilard-raught-photoNortheastern Pennsylvania’s first recognized regional landscape artist was John Willard Raught.

Raught was born in Dunmore in 1857 and trained in New York and Paris. His artworks embody the masterful, light-infused compositions of the Impressionists, as well as the pastoral and industrial landscape of anthracite coal country.

Raught was an active artist, writing several columns and articles for The Scranton Republican from 1927-1931, detailing his thoughts on painting, his love of this regions landscape, and his strong interest in the environmental conservation movement of the early 20th century.

A dialogue with four influential community panelists will be held at the Everhart Museum, starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 9 to discuss the focus of John Willard Raught artworks, as well as, his influence on today’s environmental movement.

Featured panelists will include: Natalie Gelb of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority; Maureen McGuigan of the Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department; Bernie McGurl of the Lackawanna River Corridor Association; and Richard Stanislaus, former curator at the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum.

Museum hours will be extended from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm for the general public. The event is free with paid general admission. Groups may R.S.VP. by calling 570-346-7186 ext. 516.

John Willard Raught often painted scenes around Dunmore, the town in which he was born. The young girl depicted in the painting above is Raught’s niece, Helen.

Mary Ryan shows her featured painting, “Flowers on a Rock Wall,” inspired by a photo taken while on an anniversary trip to Dublin, Ireland.

Mary Ryan of South Abington is the featured Artist of the Month for December. While she herself began painting around 1978, Mary explains that she began painting with the Dunmore Activity Hub group about a year before the new community center was constructed.

“It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of a group of such vibrant, talented, generous, kind and thoughtful men and women who enjoy painting as much as I do,” she says. “They are a joy to be with.”

Mary gets most of her ideas from photographs of places she has visited, and this month’s featured painting, “Flowers On a Rock Wall” was painted from a photo taken in Dublin, Ireland, while she was on a trip to celebrate her 40th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Ryan was quick to praise the group instructor, Jill Swerise, saying, “Jill has been a wonderful instructor. She encourages and supports our efforts with patience and insightful suggestions to help us improve and grow our painting skills.”

Dunmore Activity Hub: Artist of the Month

Her inspiration for these paints were, “The beautiful contrasts of white buildings with the blue sky and water in Santorini, and the priest, who was so focused on his meditations and prayers.”

Dolly began painting when she retired in 2009, the same year she began painting at the HUB.

She says, “I paint things and people that are important to me—my family, especially my grandchildren, and friends, and scenes from our travels.”

Commenting about the painting class, Dolly explains, “Our teacher, Jill Swersie, is quite talented and very positive. She works closely with each of us, educating, demonstrating, and encouraging us.”

Dolly says the group has become one big family, supporting each other through illness, deaths and other family crises.

As for the senior center, she points out that Jeanne Hugenbush, the director, is constantly evaluating the programs and adding new and creative choices of activities.

“I love their new Celebration of Life program,” Dolly says. “Most recently, they presented a one-man show entitled ‘John Mitchell: An American Hero,’ featuring local writer and actor Robert Thomas Hughes, and before that they did ‘Barrymore’s Ghost’ by Jason Miller.”

Dolly is now looking forward to the new Mediterranean Cooking series and photography class.
