Dunmore Activity Hub for Seniors present two-act play

The Dunmore Activity Hub for Seniors presented a two-act play, John Mitchell: An American Hero, on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

The two-act play, written and performed as a dramatic reading by Robert Thomas Hughes, was held in the Dunmore Senior Center, 1414 Monroe Ave., Dunmore.

The two-act play was presented as an interview, revealing the personal and professional insights into the life of human rights leader John Mitchell. The original play was also a tribute to John Mitchell as “a champion and defender of human rights.”

Jeanne K. Hugenbruch is executive director of the Dunmore Activity Hub and Cafe for Seniors.

“Well, it is 2016 and we should all make it our New Year’s resolution to learn something new this year,” she said. “Where did 1972 go?

“We are planning many new classes we think everyone will enjoy this year. We are asking that everyone check which programs they are interested in and mail back the form listed in our newsletter.”

Those classes and programs include: How to Self Publish a Book, DIY and Self Sufficiency classes and projects, brain games, Tai Chi, Blogging how to’s, Book of the Month Club, Gifts from the Kitchen, Host a Radio Show/ Record Podcasts, Souper Suppers – Evening Lectures, Organic Gardening, Foodiness- new veggies, our food supply and ethnic cooking, technology classes, local trips, Oil Painting, Free Online college course, Learn to Play an Instrument, Poetry Writing Classes, Community Service Projects, Mahjongg and Ballroom Dancing.

“We are hoping that everyone can please stay warm and join us at the Hub.”

The Commonwealth Medical College in conjunction with the Dunmore Senior Center is working on a collaborative project to provide technology training in an effort to bridge communication barriers. The mission is to provide education in the major communication outlets, like Facebook and Skype, on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

The Dunmore Senior Center held a Medication Take Back Event Tuesday, Jan. 12. The event was sponsored by the Lackawanna/Susquehanna Office of Drug and Alcohol Programs and the Voluntary Action Center.

Dunmore Seniors Activity Hub

The Dunmore Activity Hub for Seniors, located at 1414 Monroe Avenue in Dunmore, is busy as ever.

A Chicken and Biscuit Dinner was held Thursday, Oct. 29. There were numerous homemade sides included, and bottled water, hot coffee and hot tea was served. There was also a raffle with a Christmas gift basket, a baby quilt and various gift certificates as the prizes.

The Dunmore Activity Hub presented Barrymore’s Ghost as part of its Celebration of Life Series at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The event cost was only $5 for senior members and $8 for non-members, and that price included homemade a soup and sandwich.

Barrymore’s Ghost, written by Jason Miller, is a dramatic reading featuring Robert Thomas as John Barrymore. The play is a one-man-show that spotlights the life of legendary actor John Barrymore in a unique theatrical manner. Barrymore is presented as a ghost, haunting an unknown theatre. Those in attendance watched a mythological character explore the truths and deceptions of his extraordinary life.

Jeanne K. Hugenbruch, executive director of the Dunmore Activity Hub for Seniors, is looking forward to the upcoming events that are scheduled.

“Welcome to fall,” Hugenbruch said. “A lot is happening and coming up. We hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather and joins us for coming programs and activities at the Hub.”

Other events that were hosted last month included a free screening of the video documentary Cyber-Seniors and a demonstration of low impact exercises by representatives from Traditional Home Health.

Hugenbruch said pinochle is now played by the seniors at the Hub every Wednesday after lunch. A Chorus and Comedy Troupe has also been formed at the Hub.

An Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser Breakfast was held Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Applebee’s located at 74 Viewmont Mall in Scranton, to support the Dunmore Activity Hub for Seniors.

Other activities at the Hub include bingo, volunteer time, sketching, ballroom dancing, oil painting, Wii brain academy, bowling, Stretchin’ with Gretchen, chair exercise, blood pressure screenings, crafts, big bingo, bible study group, speakers, yoga and bingo and a Danish.

Lou Pacciotti is president of the Board of Directors. Todd LaBelle is first vice president. Atty. Brenda Colbert, Esquire, is second vice president. Joe Loftus is treasurer. Gerry Skettino is secretary. Tom Jimmie is past president.

Other members of the Board of Directors include Jeanne Phillips, Paula Scotchlas, Dr. Alice McDonnell, Santo Cancelleri, Joseph Trotta, John A. Bouselli, Alison Boga, Al Lawrence and Atty. Brian Cali, Esquire. Louis DeNaples is an honorary member. Hugenbruch is also a member of the Board.

Dunmore Seniors Activity Hub

Dunmore seniors are gearing up for upcoming fall activity programs at the Dunmore Activity Hub and Cafe for Seniors, located at 1414 Monroe Avenue in Dunmore.

“Fall is in the air and the kids are back in school, ” said Jeanne Hugenbruch, executive director of the Dunmore Activity Hub and Cafe. “It is time for us to add some new activities as well. A lot is happening and new programs are starting here at the Activity Hub and Cafe.”

Jim Masters was there and informed the Dunmore Activity Hub seniors about Pulmonary Fibrosis Wednesday, Sept. 2. Mahjong classes began at the Activity Hub at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 3. Pinochle is now played every Tuesday after lunch. Beginner’s guitar and ukulele classes are held at 10 a.m. every Tuesday by appointment.

The Dunmore Activity Hub and Cafe is in the process of getting a Chorus and Comedy Troupe together.

One of the more popular new groups is the Laughter is the Best Medicine Group which meets at 1:30 p.m. every Wednesday. “Keep the laughter going,” said Hugenbruch. “Bring in a few jokes to share and we can all exercise that funny bone.”

Traditional Home Health in Dunmore, came to the Dunmore Activity Hub and Cafe on Sept. 15, to talk about reading food labels.

A program on Medication Disposal was held Tuesday, Sept. 22. The program was sponsored by the Lackawanna/Susquehanna Office of Drug and Alcohol Programs and Voluntary Action Center. Lunch was served and there were free giveaways and desserts. Dr. Shantanu Bishwal came to the Activity Hub on Friday, Sept. 25, to discuss Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The New-Celebration of Life series began last month.. Bill Frye was there for musical entertainment Wednesday, Sept. 30. Lunch was served with a choice of chicken salad or mock crab salad platter. The cost was $5 for seniors and $8 for friends.
