UNICO conducts “Toys for Tots” drive at annual Christmas party

The Keystone Chapter of UNICO held its annual Christmas Party at Fiorelli’s Banquet Facility.  This is the sixth Christmas Keystone conducted its Toys for Tots Drive with two U.S. Marines present to pick up the treasure trove of gifts the members donated.

Luigi Palazzi, Chapter Heritage and Culture Chairman, spoke on various Italian Christmas customs.  Entertainment was offered up by local vocalist Jim Cerminaro, who also did a duet with chapter member Toni DiVizio.  Program chairman Marge Ruggiero led a great Christmas “Sing Along” with a little comedy included.

By Steve Svetovich

The Dunmore Knights of Columbus No. 3635 will be honoring Bob Roche, 96, for 75 years of service at its annual Christmas party at La Una Banquet Hall, located 429 East Drinker St. in Dunmore.

The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, with cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. dinner.

Roche, 96, who has been married to his wife Elizabeth for 70 years, joined the Knights of Columbus Council No. 280 in Scranton Jan. 1, 1940. He later joined the Dunmore Knights of Columbus No. 3635. He remains a member there.

Roche, who still gets around well and will be present at the annual Christmas party, served as Grand Knight for six years and district deputy for three years. He is a fourth degree Knight.

He is a member of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel Church.

Dunmore Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Pat Mandarano and Dennis Lalley are co-chairpersons of the annual Christmas party. Those who wish to attend can contact Mandarano (570-344-3491) or Lalley (570-342-5496) by December 12.

Joe Ehnot, 93, is next in line with years of service at 61 years and running.

Lalley commended Roche for his remarkable 75 years of service. “Bob has always been a dedicated Knight and strong supporter of the Knights of Columbus.

“He is a former very successful business owner in Scranton. He owned and operated Roche Tires.

“He is a fine, outstanding gentleman and family man. He still gets around and continues to support the Knights of Columbus. He will be present at the Christmas dinner to accept his award and recognition.

“As always, we look forward to the annual Christmas party which is going on now for over 25 years. We are looking forward to honoring Bob Roche, a very good man.”

The Dunmore Knights of Columbus held a Halloween party for local children 12 and under from 1-3 p.m Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Dunmore Community Center.
