Dunmoreans Awarded Scholarships Through Scranton Area Community Foundation

The Scranton Area Community Foundation has announced its 2020 scholarship recipients, benefiting 150 local students from various schools in the area from scholarship funds administered by the Foundation.

A total of $442,805 was recently distributed through 49 scholarships, including the highly-competitive James F. Swift scholarship.

The following Dunmore High School students were scholarship recipients: Maria Augusta, Bell Pendon, Catherine A. Alu Memorial Scholarship and Patrick Andrew Luptak Scholarship; Daniel Walsh and Steven Borgia, Joseph P. McDonald Memorial Scholarship; Rebecca Lucas and Alec Yanisko, James F. Swift Scholarship.

The following Holy Cross High School students were scholarship recipients: Andrew Joseph Smith, Constance M. & Joseph A. Brocavich Memorial Scholarship; Amaya Jackson, Jeffrey Morgan Davis Memorial Scholarship; Tori Kovalchick, James F. Swift Scholarship, and Luke Mozeleski, John R. & Maureen J. Pesavento All Saints Interparochial Academy Scholarship;

Scholarship recipients are selected annually by various scholarship committees at the Foundation.

The Scranton Area Community Foundation is a partner with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) in their Partnership for Access to Higher Education (PATH) Program to offer qualifying students additional financial aid. Through PHEAA, many scholarship recipients may be eligible for additional dollars toward their tuition.

Typically, Scranton Area Community Foundation scholarship recipients are recognized at scholarship award ceremonies but, due to the current public health crisis related to COVID-19, this was not possible this year.

Dunmorean Presents at American Psychological Association Meeting

Amara Chukwunenye of Dunmore was among Marywood University faculty and students of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (Psy.D.) who recently presented, “Infusing Education on Bias and Diversity Considerations in Psychopathology Courses,” at the 2020 virtual meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Also presenting at the APA annual meeting were Lindsay A. Phillips, Psy.D., ABPP, assistant professor in the Psychology and Counseling Center; and doctor of psychology students, Gabriel Rivera, New Cumberland, and Brienna-Rae Cruz, Jermyn.

The annual APA meeting provides countless opportunities for attendees to grow in their role as psychologists, leaders, and changemakers. Hundreds of experts from across the discipline come together to share the best information from the field and to bring professional development opportunities to licensed psychologists.

Jim Sagona Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Dante Award Sagona Jim Brogna, outgoing president of the Scranton Chapter of UNICO National, presents the Al Dante Distinguished Service Award to Jim Sagona, the chapter’s second vice president.

This award, named for the late Mr. Dante, who served as Scranton Chapter president and UNICO National president, recognizes outstanding service to the chapter and community.

Jim Sagona is the chapter webmaster, coordinator of the chapter’s Day of Service, and helps conduct the annual Christmas party at the Boys and Girls Club, among other efforts. This year he conceived and implemented a special project: producing personal protective face shields for health care and first responder personnel.
