Dunmore Summer Festival at Sherwood Park

The Summer Festival at Sherwood Park will be held Thursday, August 19th through Saturday, August 21st. Entertainment, great food, drinks, raffles, and games and bounce houses for the kids!

We are also seeking donations for our basket raffle, please message us if you can help out, we’d really appreciate it. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, please come out and support the park.

SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival

SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 13, 14 and 15, at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds, 122 Kurtz St., Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. The Festival opens Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. and on Sunday following the noon Mass and Procession.

Live Entertainment includes, Aug. 13, Dunmore High School Marching Units & Cheerleaders and Picture Perfect; Aug. 14, Holy Cross High School Cheerleaders and Popstar Drive, and Aug. 15, Feast Day Mass & Procession at noon followed by Jim Cullen, Jack Bordo and Sharon Ambrozia, Scranton Prep Cheerleaders, The Luongo Brothers Band, and fireworks at 9 p.m. 

Meditation on the Lackawanna River

Lackawanna County through the ARTS Engage! Program is sponsoring Meditation On the River, featuring meditation and music at Sweeney’s Beach, 40 Poplar St., Scranton, every Sunday in August  from 9 to 10 a.m..  

Dealing with COVID-19 has been the cause of much stress and anxiety in Lackawanna County and this program aims to offer an opportunity for relaxation and stress relief for better mental health. Participants will be taken through an hour of meditation led by Donya Jackson of Breathe and Prosper.  

The series is also designed to encourage visitation to Sweeney’s Beach in the Pinebrook section of North Scranton, an underutilized space along the Lackawanna River.  Local musicians who have lost revenue to due to COVID-19 will be performing at the program.

UNICO Picnic

Keystone Chapter UNICO is conducting its annual Picnic/Membership Drive on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at Arcaro and Genell’s at 6 p.m. with a menu including pizza, strombolis, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, desserts and soft drinks. 

If you are of Italian Descent and are interested in attending you will be guests of the Chapter. Cost for members is $15. There will also be bocce and cornhole to enjoy. For more information, contact Mary Ann Coviello 570-344-3737.

Movie Night at Circle Drive-In

Marywood University’s Alumni Office will host the feature film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at the Circle Drive-In, Dickson, City, on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 9 p.m. The feature films are open to the public and the cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 12 and under. 

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Marywood Alumni Lackawanna County Scholarship. Attendees can purchase basket raffle tickets (cash only), and the winner will be announced prior to the start of each of the movies. The Harry Potter basket includes gift certificates to Hank’s Hoagies, Harry Potter movie and popcorn, back-to-school supplies, a Harry Potter joke book and jigsaw puzzle, candy, and more.

Rummage Sale

Volunteers for SS. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, will host the 11th annual Summer Furniture/Rummage Sale Fundraiser on Aug.13 and 14, at St. Cyril’s School Gym, and outside at  133 River Street, Olyphant, starting at 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. for two days only.

Furniture, wall hangings, lamps, books, household items for kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room, and basement, tools, outdoor, toys, games, DVDs, vinyl records, jewelry, handbags, seasonal decorations, antiques/vintage items, new items, and more will be sold. 

Clothes, televisions, bowling balls, ski equipment, encyclopedias, cribs, and baby car seats are not accepted for the sale.

Car Show and Barbecue

Saint Ann Basilica Parish will host its 7th Annual Car Show and Chicken BBQ on the grounds of the Basilica in West Scranton on Sunday, August 15,  from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.  All vehicles are welcome with pre-registration at $10 and $15 on day of the show.  Chicken BBQ is pre-order only at $12 each.  To pre-register your vehicle or to pre-order your dinner or for more information, call the parish rectory at 570-342-5166.

Free Concert at Scranton Cultural Center

Scranton Cultural Center will host a free outdoor summer concert featuring The Dishonest Fiddlers on Aug. 13 outside the Cultural Center at 420 N. Washington Ave., with entertainment from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A cash bar will open at 6 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors.

The free outdoor summer concert series is sponsored by LT Verrastro, Truly Hard Seltzer, UGI Utilities Inc., WBRE/WYOU and Fidelity Bank.  It is supported by Lackawanna County and the PA Council on the Arts.

Craft Fair at Nay Aug Park

A Craft Fair will be held at Nay Aug Park on Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit a special needs playground for all to enjoy. There will be over 100 vendors, raffle baskets, food, and more.

Cancer Survivors Day

Cancer Survivors Day is a dual-location event set for Saturday, Sept. 15 at McDade Park in Scranton and Saturday, Sept. 25 at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre. The events run from 10 a.m. – noon and is free of charge although pre-registration is encouraged. 

The events feature the Circle of Survivors, an activity during which every person in attendance can say a few words about their experience with cancer. Conversation and light refreshments provide an additional opportunity for connection and support. Cancer survivors, their families, and friends, as well as caregivers and healthcare professionals are invited to attend. NEPA Learning Conference

The Scranton Area Community Foundation, through its Center for Community Leadership and Nonprofit Excellence in partnership with Moses Taylor Foundation and The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, will host its third annual NEPA Learning Conference on August 18-20. 

This event will offer nonprofit organizations and nonprofit professionals across the region the opportunity to receive in-depth training virtually from local and nationally recognized presenters.

Keynote speakers will include Heather McGhee, author of New York Times bestseller The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together; Ann Mei Chang, author of Lean Impact: How to Innovate for Radically Greater Social Good; and LaShunda Leslie-Smith, Executive Director of Connected Communities, an organization dedicated to building up neighborhoods in the Rochester, NY area by engaging residents, service providers, and community partners in a holistic approach.

Attendees of this three-day learning conference will have an opportunity to learn from local and national experts in a variety of fields, network with peers, and discover how they can create a learning culture within their organization. 

Attendees have the opportunity to attend in person at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center, 100 Adams Ave, Scranton, or online, via the conference platform app, Whova. 

While attendance is geared toward nonprofit professionals, registration is open to the public. Registration closes at noon on Monday, Aug. 16. Attendees can register through the conference website at NEPALearningConference.com.

Italian Language Hour

SIAMO, The Italian-American Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, will host its next Italian Language Hour on Sunday, June 26, at the Taylor Community Library, 710 S. Main St., Taylor, beginning at 2 p.m. SIAMO’s Italian Language Hours are designed as practice time for speakers of Italian of all levels, including beginner. Leadership Lackawanna Celebration

Celebration of Leadership is Leadership Lackawanna’s annual signature event. The event pays tribute to the leadership of our area by recognizing three individuals with awards. It also highlights achievements from the past year and honors the participants in the Leadership Lackawanna Core Program Class of 2016, the 33rd graduating class. The event includes business networking, live music, raffles, dinner stations and cocktails, a community service project showcase, and the presentation of certificates to graduating participants. Ss. Cyril and Methodius Rummage Sale

Parishioners of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, met recently to plan the sixth annual rummage sale for September 23, 24 and 25 at St. Cyril’s Grade School, 133 River St., Olyphant. Sandlot Baseball Tryouts

The Sandlot Baseball Academy travel baseball tryouts will be held on June 12 for ages 8 to 11 at Dunmore Little League from noon to 2 p.m. and for ages 12 to 17 at Dunmore High School from 3 to 5 p.m. There is no cost for the tryouts. Elmhurst Volunteer Fire Co. Picnic

02f7065392b001aaf5873c0f93308431Elmhurst-Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company will host its annual picnic on June 22-25 on the grounds located off Route 435 in Elmhurst. Grounds will open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m., and on Saturday at 5 p.m. Homemade food will be available.

Entertainment includes, on Wednesday, June 22, car show with D.J. Paul; Thursday, June 23, parade at 7 p.m. and music by Take 3; Friday, June 24, music by Hell Yo preceded by the Crystal Band of Scranton, and on Saturday, June 25, music by Old Friends. Proceeds from this event help fund fire/rescue services.

Marywood Master of Fine Arts Exhibit

Marywood University’s 2016 master of fine arts in graphic design and illustration thesis exhibition features students from the “Get Your Master’s with the Masters” program in graphic design and illustration. Thesis work, study tour books, and additional projects will be on display, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 16, from 4-5:30 p.m., in the Mahady Gallery, in the Shields Center for Visual Arts, on the University’s campus.  This exhibit and its opening reception are free and open to the public. The exhibition will be open from July 18 through July 21, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

WEC and SBDC Small Business Program

University_of_Scranton_sealThe University of Scranton Women’s Entrepreneurship Center (WEC) and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) are teaming up to offer “StartUP” a 4-week certificate program designed for women with lower incomes, those in transition or those trying to make a better life for themselves and their families, the program will offer women support and guidance in determining if entrepreneurship is an option for them. The series will be held in Scranton on Mondays, beginning June 6 and ending June 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The series is offered free of charge.
