The Dunmore Bucks high school football team has a lot to be proud of.

Veteran head coach Jack Henzes led his team all the way to the PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal game, a contest that ended the Bucks season and thwarted hopes of an undefeated campaign and state title.

Dunmore lost the state quarterfinal game, 39-19, to Ligonier Valley Friday, November 25, at Wingate.

The loss was Dunmore’s first of the season. The Bucks finished a remarkable season at 13-1.

Ligonier Valley senior back Collin Smith, a West Virginia University recruit, accounted for 356 offensive yards and threw four touchdown passes. He rushed for another score.

Jackson Daugherty caught 12 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns for Ligonier Valley.

It was a battle of the undefeated as Ligonier Valley extended its record to 14-0 and advanced to the PIAA Class 2A semifinals.

Dunmore had 11 penalties and turned the ball over three times in the loss.

Ligonier Valley scored on its first two possessions on a 22-yard field goal by Kobe Short and six-yard touchdown burst by Smith followed by an extra point kick.

The tough Bucks came right back. All Region senior back Kyle Lasher sprinted for 15 yards on first down. Senior back Colin Holmes then burst up the middle untouched for a 39-yard touchdown. The extra point kick brought Dunmore to within three points at 10-7.

The Bucks kept fighting as Michael Dougherty intercepted a third down Smith pass attempt and returned it 21 yards into enemy territory. Dunmore went ahead on a muffed play as quarterback Gavin Darcy regained possession followed a bobbled snap. He then flicked the pigskin to Jordon Petrowski for a five-yard touchdown and 13-10 Dunmore lead with 9:59 left in the second quarter. The extra point kick failed.

Ligonier Valley took the lead for good when Smith hit Daugherty with a 15-yard touchdown toss following a drive with 3:02 left in the first half. The extra point kick made it 17-13 in favor of Ligonier Valley.

Four plays into Dunmore’s next drive, Holmes fumbled after reversing in the field. A hard hit resulted in the fumble and turnover. Three players later, Smith hit Daugherty for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left in the half and a 23-13 lead. The extra point kick was blocked.

A ten-play third quarter drive ended with a Short 26-yard field goal to give Ligonier Valley a 26-13 lead.

Daugherty then intercepted a Dunmore pass attempt and the Rams marched 70 yards down the field on 15 plays, eating up much of the clock. The drive was capped by a five-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Daugherty. The extra point kick made it 33-13 with 29 seconds left in the third quarter.

Dunmore’s final score came on a five-yard Holmes run with 6:33 left in the game.

Smith threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns for Ligonier Valley.

Lasher led the Bucks with 87 yards on 19 carries in the loss. Holmes, who missed the previous four games due to injury, rushed for 55 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Ligonier Valley and its stingy defense had given up just 37 points in its first 13 games.

Dunmore defeated York Catholic, 48-35, Friday, November 18, in the PIAA Class 2A first round contest at Harman-Geist Stadium, Hazle Township.

Lasher had a game for the ages rushing for 263 yards on a remarkable 48 carries. He scored five touchdowns and was a one-man wrecking crew in the win.

Dunmore won its third straight District 2 Class 2A title Friday, November 11 with a 28-14 win over Lakeland.

Lasher was splendid in that contest, played at home, rushing for 192 yards on 23 carries. He scored three touchdowns in the win.

Athlete of the Month: Kyle Lasher

Dunmore Bucks senior tailback Kyle Lasher rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns in his team’s 36-6 win over Old Forge, but it’s all about the team to him.

Lasher, born deaf, never looks at himself as having any kind of handicap.

And neither does Dunmore veteran head coach Jack Henzes, the other members of the coaching staff, his teachers, or his teammates.

The speedy Dunmore senior, who also is the punter and a starting defensive end, is nothing but positive when he talks about his part in the Dunmore Bucks football program.

Son of Rose and Tony Lasher, Dunmore, Kyle has an interpreter, Nora Foley, with him during Dunmore football games and practices. He has an educational interpreter with him in school.

He rushed for the 234 yards on just nine carries in the Friday, October 28 win over Old Forge. It was Dunmore’s 10th win capping an undefeated 10-0 regular season. Lasher’s touchdown runs were from 31, 73 and two yards out. He now has 934 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns entering the playoffs.

He also excels as a starting defensive end and punter. He was a first team all-star punter last season. This is his fourth season on the Dunmore football team.

lasherLasher also is a member of the Dunmore track and field team. He runs the 100, 200 and relay. He also excels in the classroom where he has an A average in most subjects and is a member of the health careers club.

As expected, he was humble when asked about his 234-yard game. With his mom interpreting, he credited his teammates. “I felt good. I did my job. My teammates did the job. And we all succeeded well.”

With Dunmore about to enter the playoffs, thoughts of a state championship are there for the players. “We are looking forward to seeing how far we can go in the playoffs,” he said. “We will practice hard week by week and take one game at a time.

“Yes, we think we can achieve a state title. We can get there if we continue working hard.”

Lasher, whose favorite football teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, was featured by NFL Films on a special football program played at halftime during the Super Bowl TV telecast last year. He was filmed once again two months ago by NFL Films and will be featured again sometime this month during an NFL game telecast.

“Yes, they came back for another filming,” he said. “It was a great experience doing it last season and this year again. I will be on again soon.”

And the reaction last year from his teammates and classmates after seeing him featured during the Super Bowl? “Well, my teammates were very happy for me. They said I deserved it.”

Lasher talked about the great success of the Dunmore football team in dominating opponents this season. “It’s all about the hard work we put in during the three seasons of winter, spring and summer. We work hard, make progress and get better. We all work hard as a team. It’s all about the whole team.”

Lasher, 18, said he has not made a decision about a college and is not ruling out playing football. It is something he would like to continue doing on the collegiate level. He is unsure about a college major.

His mom said he has never looked at himself as being handicapped despite being born deaf. “It never stopped him from doing anything,” she said. “He doesn’t look at it at all as a handicap and neither do his coaches. Coach Henzes views it as not a problem at all. He has been great with Kyle. He is treated just like anyone else.”

And what a high school football and academic career this young man has put together. His coaches, parents and teachers have a lot to be proud of. And so does Kyle Lasher.

Undefeated Dunmore Bucks roll over Holy Cross

bucksBy Steve Svetovich

The undefeated Dunmore Bucks rolled over the crosstown Holy Cross Crusaders, 61-6, Friday, September 23, at Gatto Veterans Memorial Stadium, Dunmore.

Senior stalwart tailback Colin Holmes scored on touchdown runs of 44 and 43 yards on his only two carries of the game.

Junior starting quarterback Gavin Darcy hit on four-of-eight passes for 83 yards, including two touchdown strikes to senior Michael Dougherty. The touchdown tosses were from 40 and 31 yards out.

Senior back Kyle Lasher, who was featured on a Super Bowl pre-game show earlier this year, ran twice for 38 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown jaunt with 6:27 left in the first quarter to give the Bucks a commanding 21-0 lead after the extra point kick.

Holmes’ 43-yard touchdown gallop came with 10:25 left in the first quarter. His second touchdown run, a 44-yard scamper, came with 3:55 left in the first quarter giving Dunmore a 28-0 lead after the extra point kick.

Dougherty’s first touchdown, a 40-yard pass from Darcy, came with 9:05 left in the first quarter. His second touchdown, a 31-yard ariel strike from Darcy, came with 10:39 left in the second quarter. The extra point kick failed, but the Bucks had a 34-0 lead.

Dunmore (5-0 overall and 4-0 in Lackawanna League Division III), built a 47-0 halftime lead and scored touchdowns on four of its first nine offensive plays.

The brutal Dunmore running attack totaled 338 yards on 26 carries, or about 14 yards per carry. Holmes was almost untouched on both of his touchdown runs, a credit to the Dunmore offensive line.

Dunmore senior linebacker Robert Bistran really put the game out of reach for the Crusaders when he scored a touchdown on a 28-yard fumble return with 10:11 left in the second quarter. The extra point kick by Rinaldi made it 41-0 in favor of Dunmore.

That score gave veteran Dunmore coach Jack Henzes a chance to get his reserves an opportunity for playing time the rest of the contest.

The stingy Dunmore defense held Holy Cross to 103 total yards, including only 40 on the ground.

The Crusaders only score came with 11:53 left in the fourth quarter when senior Bailey Simrell scored on a two-yard burst. The two-point conversion attempt failed.

Simrell had a nice game, finishing with 27 yards on the ground and three catches for 48 yards.

The Bucks put on an impressive show offensively and defensively and it looks like coach Henzes has a very strong football team and contender once again.

Dunmore, at press time, is in first place in Lackawanna Football League Division III, with 192 points scored and 64 allowed.

Dunmore defeated Riverside, 41-13, Friday, September 16, at Dunmore. The Bucks totaled 306 yards on the ground in that contest. Lasher led the way with 89 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Holmes rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Joe Galenas rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown on seven carries in the win.
