The Little Sisters of the Poor are kicking off St. Patrick’s Day at their third annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Dinner on Sunday, March 6, at Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, located adjacent to Marywood University. The event will begin with Mass at 11 a.m. with a bagpipe processional and recessional in the chapel followed by the dinner and entertainment from 12 to 4 p.m. in the auditorium.
The menu includes ham and cabbage with potatoes and carrots, rolls and butter, vanilla ice cream with mint or chocolate syrup, and beverages. The entertainment for the afternoon includes the Kearns Drum and Pipe Band, E.J. the D.J., and Irish step dancing by the Crossmolina School of Dance.
Tickets for adults are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets for children 10 and younger are $6. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (570) 343-4065 or online at www.littlesistersofthepoorscranton.org.
In addition to the dinner, there will be a bake sale which will include the Sisters’ famous homemade scones and an assortment of other baked goods. There will also be raffles for gift baskets and gift certificates for area restaurants and businesses as well as a raffle.
There will be plenty of free and convenient parking in the residence’s parking lot or via a handicap accessible van providing shuttle service from the Marywood University parking lot on the corner of Adams and University Avenues to the dinner.
The Little Sisters also have numerous dinner sponsorship packages available which are great advertising vehicles for businesses as well as a way to honor or remember someone you love.

All proceeds will be used to assist the Little Sisters in replacing the nightstands in each resident’s room at Holy Family Residence.
Three Roman Catholic parishes in Northeastern Pennsylvania are continuing an annual tradition of collaborating to present two special services during the upcoming Advent season.
Open Our Hearts, an Advent service of word and song, will be presented in locations in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties on the second and third Sundays of Advent, Dec. 6 and 13. Both services are free and open to the public.
The first will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6, at Holy Family Parish Church, 574 Bennett St., Luzerne, and the second is set for Sunday, Dec.13, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 208 Smith St., Dunmore. The services begin at 7 p.m. each evening and are open to the public at no charge.
This year marks the seventh year of this remarkable collaboration among three parishes in two counties. The music for the service features the combined choir of more than 60 voices from Holy Family Parish, Luzerne (Rev. Joseph Pisaneschi, Administrator); SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore (Rev. David Cappelloni, Pastor); and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Dunmore (Rev. John Doris, Pastor), as well as several soloists and an instrumental ensemble. Directors of Music at the parishes are, respectively, Linda Houck, Joseph Moffitt, and Geri Seitzinger.
Open Our Hearts offers those who participate an opportunity to embrace the season of Advent and its spirit of preparation for Christmas. Through Scripture readings and musical selections, the program will focus on how God’s people have opened their hearts to welcome Him throughout salvation history.
