Mary Kay Hopkins, our January Artist of the Month, shows a featured painting titled “Bringing Home the Tree,” which was the first painting done during her class at the Dunmore Activity Hub.

Mary Kay Hopkins of Dunmore is January’s featured Artist of the Month from the Dunmore Activity Hub.

Mary Kay recalls, “I will never forget that first day at the Activity Hub. I was convinced I was not a painter and never would be. But when I announced I was not coming back, a chorus of students, led by our teacher Jill Swersie, convinced me to return. So, I did, and the rest is history.”

Mary Kay has been painting with the group of over eight years and has completed approximately 50 paintings, a few of which she has sold.

“I retired in 2007 from a job I loved as a medical transcriptionist,” she explains. “I found myself very bored and not suited for retirement. One day, in 2008, after receiving a dreaded diagnosis of breast cancer, I was feeling sorry for myself and decided to check out the Dunmore Activity Hub.”

She found a painting class in progress and decided to join the next week, citing it as “one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Mary Kay gets her inspiration and ideas from the “library” at the Center, snapshots of her grandchildren, cross country travel with her husband, and memories made with their son, such as the “Fishing at Sunset” painting in the front center of the photo inspired by Edisto Island in South Carolina.

Mrs. Hopkins raves about her instructor, saying, “Jill is a remarkable person and teacher, and she has a sparkling personality. We have become a family in the art class and she is our guide.

“She manages to bring out the artist in all of us with her expertise and gentle way. We all look forward to seeing each other on Monday, and for a few hours, we forget our problems and just have fun.”

Mary Kay says the Dunmore Activity Hub is a wonderful addition to this area. “It is well-managed and gets better every day day with our new director, Allison.”

Mary Ryan shows her featured painting, “Flowers on a Rock Wall,” inspired by a photo taken while on an anniversary trip to Dublin, Ireland.

Mary Ryan of South Abington is the featured Artist of the Month for December. While she herself began painting around 1978, Mary explains that she began painting with the Dunmore Activity Hub group about a year before the new community center was constructed.

“It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of a group of such vibrant, talented, generous, kind and thoughtful men and women who enjoy painting as much as I do,” she says. “They are a joy to be with.”

Mary gets most of her ideas from photographs of places she has visited, and this month’s featured painting, “Flowers On a Rock Wall” was painted from a photo taken in Dublin, Ireland, while she was on a trip to celebrate her 40th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Ryan was quick to praise the group instructor, Jill Swerise, saying, “Jill has been a wonderful instructor. She encourages and supports our efforts with patience and insightful suggestions to help us improve and grow our painting skills.”

Upon losing my job at Cinram, where I was Executive Assistant to the President, a dear friend of mine, Ivone Grzech,  suggested I go with her to the Dunmore Senior Center’s oil painting class.  (On a side note, I was actually the flower girl in Ivone’s wedding almost 60 years ago.)

Never having had any formal painting experience, on a whim I decided to join Ivone and all the other great painters at the Senior Center on Chestnut Street.  A little apprehensive, canvas in tote, I was introduced to the instructor, Jill Swersie.  Jill immediately put me at ease and I began the process of deciding what I should paint.  I chose a landscape scene as my first attempt and as they say “the rest is history.”

I had participated in the class every Monday for about two years and then ventured back to a full time job and therefore had to stop painting for several years.  Upon my retirement five years ago from The Commonwealth Medical College as the Executive Assistant to the President and Dean, I was able to return to the class, which is now held at the Center on Monroe Avenue.

It’s so amazing how one begins to look at nature and life with a new perspective once you begin to paint.  You begin to realize trees aren’t just green, but are many shades of green, and  flowers have brighter and sharper colors.  One just pays more attention to the details of beauty in nature and what we are blessed with.  I truly love to paint anything and everything from flowers in my garden, scenes from vacation photos, and even my daughter (Carrie) when she was a young ballerina. Through this process I found that I most enjoy painting florals.

Jill and the oil painting class were just the beginning of what has blossomed into a love for various genres of painting.  I was a member of Pocono Painters, “Come Paint with Me” plein air painters.  In the past I have also taken several watercolor classes, and oil painting classes at the Abington Senior Center.  I have also taken several painting workshops with local artists Mary Lou Chibirka and Lisa Hannick.

Having entered many local county fairs, the most exciting came when I won a first place blue ribbon, best of section white ribbon and the best of show purple ribbon for my painting “Spring Bouquet,” shown on the right in the above photo.

I have developed a true love for painting and sign my pictures Marie B. M hila as well as placing a heart somewhere in each painting.

I am so thankful to my friend Ivone, Jill Swersie and the Dunmore Senior Center for the opportunities they have given me to explore my talent as an artist.  I am forever grateful.
