The fourth annual Pittie Palooza Festival, Northeast Pennsylvania’s only dog-friendly wine fest, will be held on June 8 at Maiolatesi Wine Cellars featuring 15 animal rescues from around Northeast PA along with 50 vendors and multiple food trucks.

Proceeds from the day’s event are donated to the animal welfare groups and nonprofits in attendance.

Last year alone, Pittie Palooza Festival donated over $4000 to the escues in attendance. This event is rain or shine. No refunds. Must be 21+ to drink. Designated Driver tickets available. Children not recommended. Retractable leashes not allowed. For information, call 570-575-5426.

Vietnam Veteran Benefit

VFW Dunmore Post 3474 will host a Benefit for Vietnam veteran Joe Dodgson on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10; chikdren 12 and under, $5, and includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and beverage. There will be  raffle baskets and a 50/50 drawing.

basketballHoly Cross Basketball Camp

Holy Cross Crusader Boys Basketball Camp will be held on June 24 – 28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon for boys in grades 4-9. For information, call  570-650-9858 or email: ac31078@aol.com. Camp closes at 65 participants.

 

AARP meeting

AARP Chapter 3731 North East Pennsylvania will meet on Monday, July 1, at 1:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 720 Delaware St., Scranton, with a theme “Wear Red White and Blue.” A free blood pressure screening will be held between noon and 1:30 p.m. Speaker will be former Mayor James Connors. The school supplies collection will continue.

 

YMCAYMCA’s 175th Anniversary

June 6 marks the 175th anniversary of the founding of the YMCA in London, England. To celebrate 175 years of serving communities, The Greater Scranton Family YMCA, and Ys around the world, are celebrating with parties and 175-minutes of volunteering!

At the Greater Scranton YMCA, coffee will be served throughout the day, with cake being served at noon. All Y members are welcome. Also on June 6, Greater Scranton YMCA staff will plant flowers and children in the Early Learning Center will plant vegetables.

Anthracite Opera Presents “Hodge Podge IV”

Anthracite Opera Company presents Hodge Podge IV on Sunday, June 9, at 3 p.m.  The show features a musical variety program, from folk to classical to Broadway. Directed by Anthracite founder, Gary Richards, the musical performance will be presented at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Ash Street and Taylor Avenue, Scranton. Music/Craft Fair

Lake Winola United Methodist Church will host its 11th annual Music on the Lawn and Craft Fair / Yard Sale on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 10 p.m.  Craft and yard sale vendors will be available throughout the afternoon along with four live Christian Musical Groups who will start at 2 p.m.

There will be a chicken BBQ and campfire in the evening, as well as a Christian video “God Bless the Broken Road” while roasting marshmallows over a campfire. To be a vendor or buy tickets for the Chicken BBQ, call 570-351-7365.

Area Teachers Attend Educators in the Workplace Program

Skills in Scranton educators

Skills in Scranton, the workforce development affiliate of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, recently hosted the final cohort of its Educators in the Workplace program.

This cohort, focusing on business, finance and information technology, welcomed 14 educators from eight school districts, including Abington Heights, Dunmore, Lakeland, Riverside, Scranton and Valley View. Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit (NEIU) 19 also participated.

Donna Marie Catalano

Loving Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother

Donna Marie Catalano, (nee Mecca), 99, of Union, N.J. passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family on May 30, 2019. Born and raised in Dunmore, Donna lived in Union, N.J. since 1953.

During World War II, she worked for Standard-Piezo making transistors, then Catalano’s Market in Scranton; a cashier for Brady Farms in Union, N.J.; customer service for Sears in Union, N.J., and a sales associate for B. Altman’s in Short Hills, N.J. She retired 34 years ago.

Donna was a parishioner of St. James the Apostle Church in Springfield, and a member of the Columbiettes of Springfield, Council #5560.

Donna is pre-deceased by her husband of 51 years, Michael John Catalano. She is survived by her son, Michael Catalano and Mary Scassera, and her daughter Donna and Roger Ennis, two granddaughters, Suzanne and Paul Vlecides, and Kristin Ennis, and great-grand-daughter Alexandra Vlecides.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, June 4, at at St. James the Apostle Church, Springfield. Entombment Hollywood Memorial Park, Union. Donations in Donna’s name may be made to. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
