Doin’ Dunmore: Boy Scout Troop 66 & Volunteers Lend Hand to Borough Cleanup

By Steve Svetovich

Dunmore’s Joanne Gaetano had an idea last year.

And it worked with flying colors.

Thanks to Gaetano’s efforts and with the help of Dunmore Boy Scout Troop 66 and scoutmaster Dominic Pace, there will be a second annual Great Bucktown Litter Cleanup on Saturday, July 30, beginning at 9 a.m, at Dunmore Community Center.

“It was a big success last year,” said Chris Tigue, owner of KJ Tigue Painting, L.L.C.  “Joanne Gaetano had the initial idea and wanted to do it again this year. She spearheaded it and started this whole thing. We will clean up some debris in sections of the borough and also the weeds at the army tank on Blakely Street.

“We will hit St. Joseph’s Center in the back and also the Bunker Hill section of Dunmore. We will clean up the area around Nina’s Pizza on Adams Avenue. We will clean up all the weeds and litter. The cleanup will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the borough.”

Tigue said the Dunmore Boy Scout Troop 66 once again will volunteer and do the bulk of the work.

Tigue said Mike Judge, Dunmore DPW director, will provide the use of DPW trucks for the cleanup work.

Jay Cali, owner and operator of Don Tomaso’s Pizza, Dunmore, will provide the scouts with pizza for their efforts.

District Magistrate Paul Ware is donating trash bags for the day-long cleanup.

The scouts will do most of the weeding and cleanup work at the army tank where extra war memorials are expected to be erected in the future.

There will be a Dunmore police escort from East Mountain to Bunker Hill. Dunmore Police Chief Sal Marchese approved the police escort.

Cleanup work will be done on Mill Street and in the area around Riccardo’s Market.

Tigue said the group will meet at the Dunmore Community Center before starting the cleanup work.

“These kids did a great job last year,” said Tigue. “They are all good kids. It’s a real scavenger hunt. Mike Judge is a big help with the DPW trucks. And Paul Ware is helping us with the trash bags.”

Former Dunmore Councilman Paul Nardozzi donated garbage bags during the first annual cleanup.

“Joanne Gaetano came up with the initial idea and Dominic Pace and the scouts volunteered,” said Tigue. “It went extremely well the first time, so Joanne wanted to do this again. Some dads and sisters of the scouts also volunteer. They work really hard too.

“All of these kids are polite and respectful. I thank all of them for their efforts. We thank Dominic Pace for volunteering his scouts. I am sure they will do a great job like last year. They really made the army tank look amazing.

“They make picking up garbage and weeding enjoyable.”
