DHS Graduate Named to Chamber’s Board of Directors

Chamber Alpert PicMegan Alpert, a graduate of Dunmore High School, is among five persons named to the Board of Directors of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, the region’s premier member-based business organization, for a three-year term.

Ms. Alpert is a senior financial advisor with Preate, Behr, Alpert and Yanoski Group of Merrill Lynch.

Other new board members include: Ryan Flynn is the senior vice president and market manager for Entercom Wilkes-Barre/Scranton; Jessica Kalinoski is the director of operations for Admiral Management Services; Eric Pusey, RPh, is the owner of Medicap Pharmacy in Olyphant, and Alana Roberts is the regional affairs director for the Northeast Region for PPL Corporation.

The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization that works to improve the area’s economic environment and quality of life by providing programs and services which stimulate economic growth, promote business prosperity and nurture educational opportunities.

Twirl-a-thon Set for February 23rd

The Double “R” Twirlettes will hold their 40th annual twirl-a-thon to benefit St. Joseph’s Center on Saturday, February  23. Group members will perform from noon to 2pm in center court at the Viewmont Mall. The event is free and open to the public and donations for St. Joseph’s Center will be accepted. The Twirlettes are under the direction of Kathleen Y. Mercatili.

Now Accepting Applications for James F. Swift Scholarship

swift scholarshipThe Scranton Area Community Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2019 James F. Swift Scholarship, which provides local high school seniors graduating from a Lackawanna County high school $4,000 per year for each recipient for up to four years to assist with continuing education expenses.

Twenty area students will be selected for this prestigious scholarship through the James F. Swift Scholarship Fund administered by the Scranton Area Community Foundation.

Created in 2002 through a gift by James F. Swift to the Scranton Area Community Foundation, the James F. Swift Scholarship Fund has awarded over $2,698,000 since 2008, benefiting over 200 local students to date. Following Mr. Swift’s death in 2006, the Scranton Area Community Foundation gratefully received an unanticipated and significant gift from his estate to the scholarship fund which has allowed a great number of students from Lackawanna County the opportunity to pursue their academic and professional goals through higher education.

The scholarship aims to provide an ongoing stream of matriculation at Lackawanna County colleges and universities. It is the goal of the Scranton Area Community Foundation to award 75% of the scholarships to students who plan to attend institutions of higher learning in the Lackawanna County region.

Scranton Area Community Foundation President & CEO Laura Ducceschi praised the generosity of James Swift, noting “he has left a permanent and enduring legacy for the young people of our region. His scholarship fund makes higher education more attainable for generations of students.”

The Scranton Area Community Foundation is a partner with Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) in their Partnership for Access to Higher Education (PATH) Program to offer qualifying students additional financial aid. Through PHEAA, James F. Swift Scholarship recipients may be eligible for additional dollars toward their tuition.

Applications for the James F. Swift Scholarship will be accepted until 4 p.m. on March 15. Applicants must apply online at https://www.scholarsapply.org/james-swift/.
