Craft Sale and Cafe:

Local crafters and vendors will gather at the Dunmore Presbyterian Church on Saturday October 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a craft and cafe sale.

Door prizes will also be available.

Half of the money raised at the event will benefit those down south who were affected by the recent hurricanes.

Free Concerts at Marywood:

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will offer free performances on campus during the months of October and November.

On Sunday, Oct.22, . at 4 p.m., Marywood University will hold its faculty recital in the Marian Chapel, in the Swartz Center for Spiritual Life, on the University’s campus. This is a special opportunity to hear members of the music, theatre, and dance department perform a variety of works from the classical repertoire.

The Northeastern Youth Wind Ensemble will perform its fall concert on Sunday, Oct, 29, at 4 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. Sponsored by Marywood University, Conn-Selmer, Inc., and American Youth Ensembles, the Northeastern Youth Wind Ensemble will present a free concert. Many of Pennsylvania’s top high school musicians will perform engaging works for concert band under the direction of Marywood University’s director of bands, F. David Romines, D.M.A.

Marywood University’s Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will perform a free fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts, on the main stage. The band program at Marywood presents their two major ensembles performing works from the classic band repertoire and works by proven contemporary composers. A special tribute is planned for recently deceased American composer, David Maslanka.

Depression Screenings at Marywood:

Marywood University’s Psychological Services Center (PSC) will offer free and confidential depression screenings as part of National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, Oct. 5,  from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Psychological Services Center, located in the McGowan Center for Professional Studies. No appointment is necessary, and the screenings are free and open to the public.

Held annually during Mental Illness Awareness Week in October, National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) raises awareness and screens people for depression and related mood and anxiety disorders. The screenings are anonymous and confidential, and no commitment is necessary.

Town Hall Meeting with Rep. Haggerty:

Representative Kevin Haggerty will host a Town Hall meeting with the Pennsylvania Tax Coalition on Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dunmore Community Center, 1414 Monroe Ave. The discussion will focus on the elimination of school property taxes and House Bill 76. Haggerty notes that the passage of this bill would bring $550 million new dollars to

our school districts in PA and it would ignite an economy in Pennsylvania that is currently ranks last throughout the United States for job growth.

Comedy Show to Benefit Equines for Freedom:

Equines For Freedom will host a comedy show on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Scranton Cultural Center featuring comedians are Keith Alberstadt and Emma Willmann.

Proceeds of this event will help fund Equines For Freedom’s free program for veterans.  EFF provides a non-riding equine therapy program for military service members dealing with complex trauma including post-traumatic stress.  

Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the show beginning at 8.   After the show, there will be a comedian meet-and -greet available to VIP ticket holders.  Cost is $25 for general admission and $40 VIP priority seating. 2017 Faculty Gallery Show at Marywood:

The 2017 Marywood Faculty Biennial exhibition will be held at Mahady Gallery, Shields Center for Visual Arts, from Oct. 7 to Nov. 19.  This multimedia exhibition of current work by Marywood University’s Department of Visual Arts faculty showcases a diverse range of styles, mediums, and techniques of more than 30 artists/educators. Opening reception is Oct. 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. A gallery talk will be presented on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

New Programs at Lackawanna College:

Beginning in Fall 2018, students at Lackawanna College can select from four new majors being offered by various departments across the College. Each of the new programs has been created in response to growing job markets and the needs of current and prospective students. Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting, Professional Studies, and Restaurant and Foodservice Management, and Associate degrees in Baking and Pastry have all been added to the College’s offerings. Make-A-Wish Volunteers Needed:

Make-A-Wish is currently looking for new volunteers in Lackawanna County. To become a wish volunteer, individuals must be at least 21 years of age, pass a criminal background check and attend a training session this fall. Senior Expo hosted by Rep. Haggerty:

State Rep. Kevin Haggerty, D-Lackawanna, will host a Senior Fair on Friday, Oct. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Dunmore High School, 300 W. Warren St.

The event will feature nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies and others offering information and services geared toward older adults.

Brass Festival at Marywood:

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will present “Octuba Brass Festival,” on Sunday Oct. 8. Free performances, workshops, and rehearsals will take place from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., which will be followed by a free concert at 1:30 p.m., Room 104, in the Sette La Verghetta Center for Performing Arts.
