Random Act of Kindness Benefits Community Intervention Center

Dunmore’s Keystone Chapter UNICO National recently donated $400 to the Community Intervention Center as part of their Random Act of Kindness Initiative. The CIC serves as a day shelter providing telephone contact, mail privileges, daily storage and late afternoon nourishments for displaced and/or homeless individuals in a non-threatening environment, along with referrals to all other social services.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation can make a check payable to “Community Intervention Center” and send to 445 N. 6th Ave, Scranton, PA 18503. For more information call Kim at 570-342-4298.

Annual Italian Flag Raising Continues Despite Pandemic

The annual Italian flag raising was conducted at the beautiful Lackawanna County Courthouse Square, calling attention to the fact that October is “Italian Heritage and Culture Month” and Columbus Day, a national holiday, was just around the corner, as is our county Christopher Columbus Statue.

Initiated in 2012 by the Keystone Chapter UNICO National, and with the assistance of the County Commissioners, this has been an annual acknowledgement every year since. Local Italian organizations are invited each year to participate.

This year, County Commissioner Chris Chermak was present, along with representation by several local Italian American organizations. Participating were District Governor Cathy Bianchi, PA II UNICO National; President Mary Lynn Brannon, Carbondale UNICO; President Gail Cicerini, Scranton UNICO; President Mary Ann Coviello, Dunmore’s Keystone UNICO; Mike Iacavazzi, Past Department Commander, Disabled American Veterans of Pennsylvania; Stephanie Longo, Associate Producer of the Italian American Podcast; President Joe Macciocco, Lackawanna County Columbus Day Association and the Victor Alfieri Society; Mark McDade, Flag Raising Organizer and Event Speaker; Peter Noto, Past District Governor, UNICO PA II; First Vice-President Dr. Peter Pettinato, UNICO National; President Carmen Scrimalli, San Cataldo Club; and Carol Scrimalli, Dunmore Councilwoman.

UNICO Pasta Dinner Scheduled for Sunday November 22nd

Dunmore’s Keystone Chapter UNICO conducted its October dinner meeting at the new Colarusso’s Coal Fire Pizza in Dickson City, formerly Al Mia Amore. Keystone UNICO members were the first customers to experience dining in their newly renovated banquet room, featuring all COVID-19 protocol. The dinner was delicious and the accommodations were perfect.

In keeping with October being Italian Heritage and Culture Month, Chapter member Mary Ann Stoppini gave an interesting review of Dianne Hales’ book “La Passione”. Its theme is “Everything in Italy is done with passion and there probably would be no real passion in the world without Italians.”

Also discussed was Keystone’s upcoming Pasta Dinner fundraiser for local charities and scholarships. Dinner will be available for take-out or dine-in at Villa Maria at 1610 Washburn Street, West Scranton, on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and includes penne pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, and cake for dessert. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased by contacting Frank or Mary Ann Coviello at 570-344-3737 or any chapter member. Pre-sales are encouraged and there will be a limited number of tickets at the door.
