Former Dunmorean publishes article on Pope Francis

In a recently published scholarly article, former Dunmore resident, Marywood graduate, and Lackawanna College professor John Baldino draws a unique line between the university’s teaching philosophy and Pope Francis’ position on the globalization of society.

Baldino’s “Pope Francis on the Environment, Technology, and an Open World” was published in the inaugural issue of Charity in Truth: A Journal of Ethics, Religion, and Culture. In it, he recalls Marywood’s pedagogical outcome “living responsibly in an interdependent world” and relates it to the overarching theme of the Pope’s writings on fraternity and social friendship in Fratelli Tutti

“When I read the Pope’s encyclical I immediately thought of my years at Marywood and how often we would hear that teaching motto,” Baldino says. “The increasing connection of our global society through communication technology and needs for social justice make our world a smaller place,” he continues.

“Pope Francis recognizes and speaks so well of this in Fratelli Tutti. I just had to weave Marywood’s philosophy into the article to show that Francis’ desires for positive and productive globalization are being realized right here in the greater Scranton area.”

The inaugural issue of Charity in Truth, published on June 30, features a second article by Baldino: “The Catholic Church and Contemporary Issues of Dignity and Life.”

As described by Editor-in-Chief Dr. Peter DePergola, the critical analysis uses “contemporary examples, Church documents, and Papal teachings from three different centuries [and] logically defends and fully explains the pro-life philosophy far beyond political rhetoric … For the author, dignity must be applied to life, living, and dying with special consideration for issues related to abortion, homelessness, freedom of choice, physician-assisted suicide, and capital punishment.”

John Baldino is a Secular Franciscan and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts with a concentration in digital media and broadcast production from Marywood in 2007. Baldino holds a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in philosophy and religious studies from Excelsior University in Albany, New York. He is an Assistant Professor in Philosophy and Religious Studies at Lackawanna College in Scranton, where he also serves as Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Baldino writes often on the relationship between philosophy and theology and is a regular contributor to Catholic Insight Magazine in Toronto, Ontario. In 2024 he will complete his second master’s degree, a Master of Arts in Theology from St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine.

LSP-Nunsense“What really makes this show work is that it’s real,” says Misko. “Presenting the Sisters as real people, and not campy caricatures is the essence of the show. John and I understand the humor of the nun because we know so many Religious Sisters so well. We were both taught by nuns.”

“I have a tremendous respect for nuns,” adds Baldino. “I’ve worked with Sisters my entire adult life, and that’s what makes me love ‘Nunsense.’ Working with Robby (Misko) makes it even better as we have the same vision for the show, and are true to Dan Goggin’s original intention.”

“Nunsense” is the story of the Little Sisters of Hoboken and their fundraiser variety show. The show stars Misko as Reverend Mother and Baldino as Sr. Mary Hubert, a role he has played over 75 times. Completing the cast are Erin Canedy as Sr. Mary Leo, Christine McGeachie as Sr. Mary Amnesia, and Courtney Rosenkrans as Sr. Mary Robert Anne.

Local parishioner makes permanent profession to the Secular Franciscan Order

Father Bob Simon with Baldino

JOHN BALDINO, OFS, right, who is retreat leader and CCD teacher at SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore, is shown with Rev. Robert Simon, left, who concelebrated Holy Mass as Baldino make his lifelong profession to the Secular Franciscan Order recently.

Alongside three other candidates for profession, and surrounded by friends and relatives who have supported him throughout his life and in his formation, John Baldino, OFS, made his lifelong profession to the Secular Franciscan Order on Sunday, Feb. 21. The profession took place during Holy Mass in the Chapel at St. Joseph Oblates Center, Pittston, at 1:30 p.m. This is where members of St. Joseph Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order gather in community each month.

Rev. Jerome Wolbert, OFM celebrated the Mass with co-celebrants Rev. Robert Simon and Rev. Gerald Gurka. Rachel Baldino, wife of newly-professed John Baldino, OFS, served as leader of song with Linda Houck of Holy Family Parish as organist and director of music.

Council and professed members of St. Joseph Fraternity, and priests of the Diocese of Scranton were among those assembled at the chapel, where the Baldino and three others vowed to live the remainder of their lives by the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order. The Rule calls brothers and sisters of the Order to live the Holy Gospel, bringing it to life each day, and leading by example.

Baldino entered formation with the Secular Franciscans in 2013, two years after completing one year of priestly formation at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. He left seminary knowing the priesthood was not his calling, and continued to discern God’s will for him.

“The journey will continue,” Baldino said about his profession to the Order. “I am eagerly awaiting more opportunities to serve my local fraternity, the Secular Franciscan Order, and God’s people. I am blessed to have been called, and ready to accept the work and the challenges that come with responding to this call.”

Post-profession, Baldino will continue his career in media and follow his profession promise to live the Gospel life. He will evangelize by example in his family life, his work, and his apostolate service focusing on the virtues of holiness, humility, and charity.

John, a native of Carbondale, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts: Broadcast Production and Digital Media from Marywood University, and is near completion of a Master of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies: Philosophy and Media Communications at Excelsior College.

John is a consecrated member of St. Maximilian Kolbe’s Militia of the Immaculata, and maintains an active ministry in the Catholic Church. He is a CCD teacher and retreat leader at SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish in Dunmore. Additionally, John serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Master of Liturgical Ceremonies, spiritual minister to the sick and dying, and presider at wake and grave-site services. He is also digital media producer and outreach advisor for the Religious Teachers Filippini, a pontifical institute of Catholic Sisters.

The Secular Franciscan Order (Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis) is a branch of the world-wide Franciscan Family. Members are single and married. Some are diocesan clergy. They work, worship, and play in the communities in which they live. The Order was established by St. Francis of Assisi more than 800 years ago. Its purpose is to bring the Gospel to life where members live and where they work. Members look for practical ways to embrace the gospel in their lives and try to help others to do likewise.
