Ballet Theatre of Scranton and Marywood University present the 43rd annual free performances of The Nutcracker Dec. 26, 27 and 28th at the Marywood Sette LaVerghetta Theater at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day.

Sponsored by Fidelity Bank, free tickets are available to the general public two hours prior to the specific performance at the Marywood box office.

Trolley Museum Events

In the true spirit of the season, the Electric AliCity Trolley Museum will hold a series of holiday events and trolley runs. The very popular “Santa on the Trolley” excursions are scheduled for December 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23.  

Departure times for these rides are: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Reservations are required. The 10-mile ride for all of the special excursions travels to the Trolley Works Building at the PNC Field and then back to the Museum.

On Saturday, Dec. 15, will be a Children’s Holiday Celebration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with activities such as arts and crafts, Mrs. Claus, a magician, refreshments and music.

Breakfast with Santa at Allied Services

Santa-walk-5Allied Volunteers are offering their annual “Breakfast with Santa” on Saturday, Dec. 15, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Graff Community Room at Allied Services.

The all-you-can-eat breakfast will include eggs, French toast, sausage, cereal, coffee, tea and juice while Christmas music plays throughout.  All will have the opportunity to sit with Santa and receive a gift. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

Gov. Casey Lifetime of Service Event

The Governor Robert P. Casey Medal for a Lifetime of Service event, originally scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15, was postponed due to inclement weather. The event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m., at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center.

Book Sale and Swap at Marywood

booksMarywood University continues to promote books and reading through its biannual book swap and sale to be held in the Learning Commons Lobby from today and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. and Friday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., on Friday, December 7, 2018. This event is free and open to the public.

A wide selection of titles and genres will be available. The book swap and sale is sponsored by the English Club and Library Services. Book donations are being received on the first floor of the Learning Commons.

Marywood Transfer Day

Marywood University will hold an on-campus Transfer Day program on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 6 p.m.  for college students or former college students considering transferring to Marywood University. Transfer students are welcome at all stages of their college careers. In a single visit, visitors can discuss financial aid and scholarship options, transfer credits, take a tour of campus, and complete an application for admission.

Transfer Day will be held at the Office of University Admissions in the Liberal Arts Center, on Marywood University’s campus. Spring semester classes begin on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

With the Dec. 31 entry deadline quickly approaching, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students grades 9-12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. Holiday Concert

Marywood University’s String Project will hold its Holiday Gala Concert on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. The performance is free and open to the public. Marywood University’s String Project is an after-school, pre-collegiate string program for students ages 7-18. Participants take small-group lessons in violin, viola, cello, and double bass; participate in orchestra; and perform in concerts according to their experience level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced).

Winter Nature Camp

The Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center will hold this year’s Winter Nature Camp from Dec. 26 -28  from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lackawanna College Environmental Education Center (LCEEC), 93 MacKenzie Road, Covington Township, PA 18444. Children will explore winter through science experiments, track animals in the snow, get up-close to live turtles, and build a campfire.

There will also be plenty of outdoor play, fun winter-themed games, crafts, and snacks. The program is open to children ages 5-11. The cost is $115 for all three days or $45 per day. 326Choir and String Concert at Marywood

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will hold its Concert Choir and String Ensemble Concert on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. The performance is free and open to the public.

Rick Hoffenberg, D.M.A., cochair, and associate professor of choral conducting will lead the Concert Choir, along with Tsukasa Waltich, pianist, and Edward Loch, Ellen Rutkowski, and Tsukasa Waltich, sectional conductors. The String Ensemble will be led by Sophie Till, M.M., clinical assistant professor of violin and viola, and Christiane Appenheimer-Vaida, lecturer for the music, theatre, and dance department at Marywood University.

“Wake Up with the Arts Breakfast” Set for October 5th

arts breakfastMatthew Serio, Program Director at the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA), will be the featured speaker at the “Wake Up With The Arts Breakfast,” set for Friday, Oct. 5, at the Electric City Trolley Museum, on the property of Steamtown National Historic Site from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM.

The ninth annual event, sponsored by the Lackawanna County Arts & Culture Department, brings national speakers to our community on varied arts topics of interest. 

The breakfast will open with a short performance by the Justin Padro Trio and tables will be decorated by local artists and organizations.

Mr. Serio’s lecture, The State of the Arts in Pennsylvania, will focus on arts and culture trends across the state, the challenges and opportunities the arts face in Pennsylvania, and the role of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.  

Matthew has been in his position as Program Director at the PCA since 2012.  He oversees the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, Entry Track, Local Arts, Presenting and Theater grant programs. Formerly he was Director of Development for Habitat for Humanity for Berks and Lancaster Counties; a Program Manager for the Berks Arts Council; and Festival Director of the Greater Reading Film Festival. He is a graduate of Kutztown University with a degree in Communication Design.

Since its inception, the arts breakfast has served as a creative networking event, focusing on educating, motivating and inspiring the public to use the arts, area artists, and art organizations, businesses and agencies to enhance the quality of life in Lackawanna County’s communities.  It also showcases the artistic talent in Northeastern Pennsylvania, due to the fact that the tables at the event are decorated by local artists and organizations.

The “Wake up with the Arts Breakfast” is free and open to the public.

Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser

A Flapjack Breakfast Fundraiser will be sponsored by Keystone Chapter UNICO, Dunmore, at Applebee’s at Viewmont Mall Dickson City, with proceeds benefiting St. Francis Commons for homeless veterans on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8 to 10 a.m. at a cost of $7 for adults; $4 for children. Purse BingoDesigner Purse Bingo

The Board of Directors of the Dunmore Senior Center are planning the third annual Designer Purse Bingo at Dunmore Community Center, 1414 Monroe Ave., on Sunday, Oct. 7,  in memory and in honor of long time Board Member and Senior advocate Sandy Cancelleri. Doors will open at 11 a.m., with bingo beginning promptly at 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the participants of the Center.  The bingo will feature purses by designers, Coach, Dooney and Bourke, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Vera Bradley.

The Electric City Trolley Museum will continue its Summer “Meet, Greet & Ride the Trolley” program with a group of very popular children’s characters on Sept. 15 featuring Hello Kitty. There will be arts and crafts, a caricature artist, a magician and a balloon artist as part of both programs.  Reservations are required. Rummage Sale

Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church in Olyphant, will host its the eighth annual fundraiser rummage sale  at St. Cyril’s Grade School Gym. 133 River Street in Olyphant, on Sept. 21, 22, and 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Our Lady of the Abingtons Fall Festival

Our Lady of the Abingtons will hold its 51st annual fall festival on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 11 p.m., featuring a pig roast, and Sunday, Sept. 16, from noon to 7 p.m. with a chicken barbecue, at the church grounds, 700 W. Main St. in Dalton. Reb. Arbogaste Satoun is pastor. There is free parking and no admission.

Pizza, pierogies, clam chowder, homemade baked goods will be featured, along with a silent auction, book nook, white elephant, children’s games and entertainment. For information, call 570-563-1622.

Pocono Folk Festival

John Sebastian will headline the inaugural Pocono Folk Festival on Sept. 15. The concert will celebrate the summer’s-end and beginning of the fall season in the Poconos with an all-day concert to be held on the stage and grounds of the Historic Castle Inn, 20 Delaware Ave., Delaware Water Gap, PA. The rain or shine event begins at 11 a.m. and closes at 10:30 p.m. and will feature folk, classic rock, bluegrass, Americana, and tributes to The Band and The Grateful Dead.

Tickets are festival seating/general admission for $39.50 in advance and $49.50 at the gate day of show.  Tickets can be purchased at www.poconofolkfestival.comor at the box office on show day.

Marywood Backpack Project

no-backpacks-clipart-1Marywood University’s Service Committee is holding its fall service project, “Filled with Care,” with a back-to-school focus. The committee is collecting donations of back-to-school supplies including: backpacks, lunch boxes/bags, notebooks, pencils/pens, and art supplies.

All supplies will be donated to the Isaac Tripp Elementary School, Scranton, Pa. Marywood University’s Service Committee previously ran its winter service project, “Filled with Care,” exceeding its goal of donating 100 filled cinch bags with a hand-written inspirational note, benefitting men and women at the Community Intervention Center.

Donations for the Back-to-School service project are being accepted through Sept. 4. Drop-off locations include: Learning Commons, suite 310; Liberal Arts Center, near the Office of University Admissions; Campus Ministry, in the Swartz Center for Spiritual Life; and Maria Hall.

CONQUER Conference

Marywood University’s Student Activities and Leadership Development office with hold its second annual CONQUER Student Leadership Conference on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. Faculty and staff from Marywood University and other local colleges and universities, as well as individuals in leadership positions within the community, will present at the conference.

Keynote speaker at the CONQUER Student Leadership Conference at Marywood University is Bill Coon,  a two-time survivor of organ transplants, the first of which, a heart transplant, was performed just days after his birth. Living without complications from the heart transplant until age 20, he was rushed to the hospital in 2009 suffering end-stage heart and kidney failure. Thanks to the generosity and selflessness of Mr. Coon’s second donor, his life was saved again on October 21, 2009.

Live Theater Fundraiser

Our Cabaret Productions is partnering with the Dietrich Theater in Tunkhannock, in a live theater fundraising event for the Wyoming County Cultural Center featuring the off-Broadway hit “Nunsense.” The music and antics of the Little Sisters of Hoboken will entertain audiences at the Dietrich on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Art Exhibits at Marywood 

Marywood University’s Art Galleries will host an opening reception for its three exhibits on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Mahady Gallery, on the first floor of the Shields Center for Visual Arts. This event, as well as the exhibits, are free and open to the public.

marywoodThe 2018 Marywood Art Faculty Biennial will be held in the Mahady Gallery, which is located on the first floor of the Shields Center for Visual Arts. This multimedia exhibition of current work by Marywood University’s Department of Visual Arts faculty showcases a diverse range of styles, mediums, and techniques from 25 artist-educators. The exhibit will be on display through Saturday, Oct. 13.

CONNECT: The College of Arts and Sciences Selects from The Maslow Collection is a celebration of the interconnectivity between all fields in higher learning and the recent reformation of the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. The exhibit will be on display through Nov. 2. The Maslow Gallery is located on the first floor of the Shields Center for Visual Arts.

The Marywood Print Guild will host an exhibit for its 2018 collection of 20 works in the Suraci Gallery, located on the second floor of the Shields Visual Arts Center for Visual Arts. There will be an artist walk-through beginning at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20,  during the opening reception. The Print Guild will be on display through Sunday, Oct. 7.

Many Sports_0Student Athlete Preview Day at Marywood

Marywood University’s Athletic Department in partnership with the Office of University Admissions, will hold a Student-Athlete Preview Day on Saturday, Oct. 6,  from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is designed as an opportunity for prospective student-athletes to experience campus, learn about academic programs, and meet with coaches, admissions counselors, and financial aid staff.

Registration will take place from 9:15-10 a.m., in the Lobby of the Center for Athletics and Wellness. Opening remarks and a welcome will be offered by Eric Grundman, assistant director of Athletics and Recreation, in the Insalaco Arena, followed by an Information Session given by admissions staff. Tours of campus will take place from 11:15 a.m. to Noon, and lunch will be provided to all attendees following the Information Session. The day will conclude with student-athletes meeting with coaches in the Center for Athletics and Wellness on the University’s campus.

Marywood University is an NCAA Division III Institution and a member of the Atlantic East Conference, Landmark Conference (women’s golf, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving only), and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). With the addition of Men’s and Women’s Rugby as varsity sports, Marywood University sponsors 22 varsity programs.
