Patrick N. “Pat” Portanova, Jr., 76, of the Bunker Hill Section of Dunmore, died Friday in Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.  His wife, the former Dolores Pooth, died in 1992.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Patrick Sr. and Carmella “Molly” DiSavino Portanova, he was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore.  Prior to his retirement, he was the head of maintenance for UGL. 

Pat was a true patriarch of the family, and will forever be known as a generous, selfless, and thoughtful individual who was always willing to help anyone.

Surviving is his son, Anthony Portanova and wife Kerri, Moscow; stepson Philip Williams and wife Lisa, Scranton; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.  

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rocco’s Church, Kurtz St., Dunmore.  Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.  All those attending are asked to go directly to the church.   

Friends may call Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Savino Traditional Funerals and Cremation Care, 157 S. Main Ave., West Scranton. Carl J. Savino, Jr., Supervisor.  Those who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are required to wear a mask at both the funeral home and the church.

Remembering Donna M. Gianzanti

Donna M. Gianzanti, 65, Dunmore, died Thursday in Geisinger- Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was the wife of the late Paul “Ellie” Gianzanti who died in 2001.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Marie Bonavoglia Donnini of Dunmore and the Late Fred A. Donnini. A member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore, Donna graduated from Dunmore High School Class of 1974.

She was an amazing mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend whose radiant green eyes and beautiful smile would light up any room. Donna’s grandchildren were the center of her world and she treasured the time she spent with them. She will be best remembered for her Italian cooking, Sunday dinners, gardening and especially for her unique sense of humor.

Also surviving are her children Paul and Dana Gianzanti and grandsons Antonio Shehadi and Giovanni Gianzanti all of Dunmore, sisters, Santa Burne and her husband Fran, Judy DePietro and her husband Tom, and Rosemary Ciaglia and her husband Rick, all of Dunmore, a brother, Fred Donnini and his wife Theresa, Lake Ariel, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two nieces, Britani Ciaglia and Michelle Burne.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11AM. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment will follow in the Dunmore Cemetery.

Remembering Robert E. Jackson

Robert E. Jackson, formerly of 1630 Clay Avenue, Dunmore, died Friday May 7th, at Mountain View Care Center, Scranton, after a long illness. 

He was born in Scranton on January 7, 1951 to the late Edward G. and Mary McGoldrick Jackson and suffered his whole life from injuries at his birth. 

Robert attended the Dunmore schools and other special programs. He also particularly enjoyed his walks throughout the streets of Dunmore, where he was well known for his outgoing personality. 

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his uncle, Rev. John J. Jackson, numerous members of the McGoldrick family and his long time caregiver, Joseph McDonough. 

Gratitude is extended to the staff at Mountain View Care Center, and especially Jennifer Lillo and Sirivanh Sophabmixay, as well as Dr. Michael Kondash and Michael Lukus, PA, for their many years of compassionate care of Robert. 

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore . Interment in Cathedral Cemetery.
