DHS Crimson Company Presents: “Peter and the Starcatcher”

Members of the Dunmore High School Crimson Company will present their fall play, “Peter and the Starcatcher,” November 15 through 18 at the Dunmore High School Auditorium.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” is the uproarious prequel to Peter Pan from Disney Theatrical Group. Based on the bestselling novels by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, this entertaining adventure tells the story of how Peter and the Lost Boys got to Neverland and playfully explores the bonds of friendship, duty and love.

Wednesday through Friday, there will be one performance beginning promptly at 7 p.m. each evening. On Saturday, November 18, there will be two shows — a matinee at 1 p.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m.

For children ages 5 and under, tickets cost $5.00. For students and seniors, the cost is $8.00, and for adults a tickets are $10.00 each.

Home for the Holidays

The Dunmore Pride Committee announces the third annual “Home for the Holidays” on Sunday, Nov. 26, at Dunmore Corners. This joyous community event will commence with a Santa Parade kick-off from the Carlucci Golden Desantis Funeral Home at 1 p.m., then proceed to the First National Community Bank where Santa will greet all with photo opportunities.

Christmas spirit will be spread by local retail businesses, vendors, and restauran filled with holiday cheer. Holiday activities for children of all ages will be abound. “Home for the Holidays” will conclude at 4:30 p.m. with a Christmas caroling at the tree lighting finale.

Designer Purse Bingo

Dunmore’s Keystone UNICO is sponsoring a “Designer Purse Bingo” with proceeds going to local scholarships and charities. The Bingo will be conducted at the Eagle McClure Hose Company, Old Forge on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 12-4 p.m. Tickets are $20. There will be 20 designer purses, namely Michael Kors, Coach, Kate Spade, Dooney and Bourke and Patricia Nash. There will also be four “Special Bingo Prizes” as well as a basket raffle. Refreshments and baked goods will be available for purchase. No alcoholic beverages will be served. Keystone UNICO is a 501c3 not for profit organization. Spirited Art Party Fundraiser

The Little Sisters of the Poor will host a Spirited Art party from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Holy Family Residence. Spirited Art, which is a very popular program for creative and non-creative types, provides individuals and friends an opportunity to create paintings while sampling beverages and snacks such as wine and cheese.

The cost is $35 per person and includes an instructor-led class, paints, smocks, brushes, easels and canvases. The Little Sisters also will provide snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Attendees are welcome to bring their own wine and snacks as well. Seating is limited.

Marywood Open Houses

Marywood University will hold undergraduate and graduate open house events in November.

The Undergraduate Open House on Nov. 11 will begin with registration at 9 a.m., in the Fireplace Lounge in the Nazareth Student Center, on the University’s campus. These events are for high school students and their parents and will include conversations with representatives of academic departments, admissions counselors, financial aid, athletic coaches, and members of campus clubs and organizations. Additionally, campus tours, a continental breakfast, and a buffet lunch for all guests will be included.

The Graduate Open House on Nov. 4, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., in the Fireplace Lounge at the Nazareth Student Center, on the University’s campus. This event is for future graduate and doctoral students and will include an overview of Marywood University, conversations with admissions counselors, meetings with faculty, and a financial aid/scholarship session. Optional tours of campus will be available.

Seraph Brass Quintet at Marywood

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will host the Seraph Brass Quintet, America’s top female brass players, on Friday, Nov. 10, from 7-8 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts, on the University’s campus.

The performance is free and open to the public. Seraph Brass has toured throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe. They have performed multiple concerts at the Lieksa Brass Week in Finland, and they were the featured ensemble at the International Women’s Brass Conference.

Chamber Gala

Tickets are still available for the 2017 Chamber Gala, where The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce will announce the winners for the 2017 SAGE Awards (Scranton Awards for Growth and Excellence), which honor outstanding local businesses for their talent, creativity, and innovation.

This year’s Gala will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2, at The Theater at North. Cocktails and cuisine will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the award presentations will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $50 and are available at www.scrantonchamber.com.

Money Matters Workshop at Marywood

Marywood University’s Accounting and Finance Club will be holding a program called Money Matters, at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania on Nov. 9, at 3:45 p.m., at the Boys and Girls Club, 609 Ash Street.

During the workshop, Marywood Accounting and Finance Club student members will teach Boys and Girls Club members (ages 6-9) about the importance of financial savings and lead them in an arts and crafts project to create their own personal piggy bank. Additional sessions are planned for the spring semester, at which Marywood students will teach the Boys and Girls Club members (ages 10-14) about basic money management and finance skills such as how to write a check, understanding what a credit card is, and how to use a credit card appropriately.

Festival of Trees

The care-free times of the “Roaring Twenties” will be the theme of this year’s annual Festival of Trees exhibit and Toys for Tots reception fundraiser, which will be held at the Marketplace at Steamtown in the former Abercrombie & Fitch space on Friday, Dec. 8.

The Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department is currently seeking non-profit organizations, businesses, churches and schools to sponsor and decorate a tree. All funds raised from the trees will go directly to Toys for Tots.

The cost to sponsor a tree is $50 for non-profits, schools and small businesses (50 or under employees) and $100 for corporations (over 50 employees). Participants must supply their own artificial tree. All trees must be set-up and completely decorated for the December 8 reception.

To register a tree, send a check or money order, made payable to Toys for Tots, to Gerard Hetman, Festival of Trees, Lackawanna County Community Relations Department, 200 Adams Avenue, Sixth Floor, Scranton, PA 18503, along with your contact information.

The trees will be on display through Jan. 12.

16th Generations Sing Concert

The Catholic Choral Society will present the 16th Generations Sing Concert on Sunday evening, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton. As in past years, this year’s celebration concert strives to celebrate both ecumenical diversity and multigenerational singers.

The Catholic Choral Society, marking its 69th season, is composed of more than 50 members from both Luzerne , Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike, Wyoming and Susquehanna Counties.

This year The Catholic Choral Society will both sing and host the following groups:

Elementary School: “Moscow Melodies,” directed by Michele Conaboy

Valley View 5th Grade Intermediate Chorus, directed by Stacey Whitaker

High School: Greater Nanticoke Area High School Chorus, directed by Ellen Rutkowski

College: King’s College: “Cantores Christi Regis, ” directed by Rob Yenkowski

Ann Manganiello is the music director of the Catholic Choral Society; Jean Shields is the accompanist. Brenda L Grunza is president of the Catholic Choral Society and president emeritus is Dr. Thomas Rittenhouse.

All are invited to attend; there is no admission charge, however, the opportunity for supporting the concert through a free will offering will be available.

“Dunmore Shoots vs. Dunmore Ladders”

The Dunmore Fire Department is challenging the Dunmore Police Department to a charity Softball Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m. at Sherwood Park. Entitled the first annual Hot Shots Tournament, “Dunmore Shoots vs. Dunmore Ladders,”the two departments are going to raise money for charities by selling T-Shirts, basket raffles,50/50 drawings and pass the cap. All proceeds will be donated to Dunmore youth organizations.

Grief Workshop

We recognize that learning how to live without your loved one is difficult. How do you cope? Will you ever feel normal again?

VNA Hospice, located at 301 Delaware Avenue in Olyphant, is holding workshops in September and October to help those who are grieving. The classes will answer all of your questions and offer ways to help you continue your life productively, even when it’s a “tough day.”

DHS Class Reunion

Dunmore High School, Class of 1957, will celebrate a 60th anniversary reunion on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 9 p.m. at La Buona Vita, Reilly Street, Dunmore.

Knights of Columbus Meeting

Knights of Columbus, Dunmore Council 3635, will hold their next regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m,. at St. Rocco’s Church Hall, 122 Kurtz St, Dunmore. All members are encouraged to attend. The agenda includes the annual Halloween party for children and football sweeps tickets.

Medicare Outreach Program

State Rep. Kevin Haggerty, (D) Lackawanna, has announced a new Medicare outreach program will be available every third Monday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at his district office, located at 1414 Monroe Avenue in Dunmore.

Haggerty said an APPRISE representative from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging will help constituents with questions about Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap plans, Medicare drug plans, PACE/PACENET prescription-drug coverage and various low-income assistance programs, such as the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help.

The Lackawanna County representative is asking constituents to please call his office to make an appointment at 570-342-2710. The local APPRISE program is sponsored by the Voluntary Action Center and is funded by the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging.

Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Casino Trip:

The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold a bus trip to the Sands Casino & Outlets in Bethlehem on Saturday, Sept 30. The bus will depart from St. Patrick’s Church, Jackson Street, West Scranton, at 10 a.m. and returns for home at 5 p.m. The cost of the trip is $25 with a $20 slot rebate and $5 food voucher. There are outlet shops to explore as well as the city of Bethlehem. All proceeds benefit St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen and various local charities. Cancer Survivors Day

Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., has been named chair for the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute’s 25th Annual Cancer Survivors Day- Honoring, Remembering, Sharing. Cancer Survivors Day is a dual-location event set for Saturday, Sept. 23, at McDade Park in Scranton and Saturday, Sept. 30 at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre from 10am – noon and is free of charge although pre-registration is encouraged.

The events feature the Circle of Survivors, an activity during which every person in attendance has the opportunity to say a few words about their experience with cancer. Conversation and light refreshments provide an additional opportunity for connection and support. Cancer survivors, their families and friends, as well as caregivers and healthcare professionals are invited to attend.

SS. Cyril and Methodius Rummage Sale

The seventh Annual Fund Raiser Rummage Sale for SS. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, will be held on Sept. 22, 23, and 24 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m and Sunday until 2 p.m. Free parking is available across from the school and the Parish Parking lot at 207 River St., Olyphant.

Property Tax Meeting

State Rep. Kevin Haggerty, D-Lackawanna, will host a property tax elimination Town Hall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at his Olyphant Satellite Office, 530 E. Park St. Haggerty explained that since an Aug. 2 meeting in Scranton, his office has received daily phone calls from property owners who weren’t able to attend that meeting but want more information. Pacers Club’s Surf & Turf Dinner

Marywood University’s athletics club, the Pacers Club, will host a Surf and Turf Dinner on Monday, Sept. 25, from 6-9 p.m., at Morganz Pub and Eatery, 315 Green Ridge St., Scranton, Pa. The cost of the dinner is $85. Proceeds from the event will assist with the cost of student-athletes’ equipment and their events and programs.

The Pacers Club Surf and Turf Dinner will also serve as an opportunity to welcome Marywood University’s newest executive officers, Susan Turell, Ph.D., provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, and Tammy McHale, vice president of business affairs and treasurer.

“A Streetcar Named Desire” at Marywood University

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will present its fall production of A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams’ classic American Drama, on Friday, Oct. 6, and Saturday, Oct.7. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., each day in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. Admission is $10 for adults; $8 for seniors; and $5 for students.

This year is the 70th anniversary of Tennessee Williams’ classic, A Streetcar Named Desire. The play will be performed by a talented ensemble of Marywood students and members of the community. The American Drama tells the story of the tragic heroine Blanche Dubois, who is searching for kindness and beauty in post-World War II New Orleans, colliding with Stanley Kowalski, her ruthless, brutish brother-in-law, while her reality crumbles around her.

Senior Fair Hosted by Rep. Haggerty

State Rep. Kevin Haggerty, D-Lackawanna, will host a Senior Fair on Friday, Oct. 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Dunmore High School, 300 W. Warren St.

The event will feature nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies and others offering information and services geared toward older adults. Vendors and senior service providers interested in participating in the expo may contact Haggerty’s office at (570) 342-2710.

The 112th District includes Archbald/Eynon, Blakely/Peckville, Dunmore, Jessup, Olyphant, Throop and Scranton.

Strength Training and Nutrition Classes

Penn State Extension, in collaboration with The University of Scranton, will be offering strength training and nutrition classes to help men and women improve their muscle strength and bone density. The “Growing Stronger” 12-week strength training program is designed for adults 40 and older. Two classes are being offered. One is on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at West Side Active Older Adult Community Center, 1004 Jackson St., Scranton, beginning Sept. 6. The other one is on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1 pm to 2 p.m. at Abington Senior Center, 1151 Winola Road, South Abington Township, beginning Sept. 7. The cost is $115.

Lackawanna River Conservation Association’s 30th anniversary

The 30th Anniversary celebration of the Lackawanna River Conservation Association will include over 30 events and activities conducted during September and October at various locations throughout the Lackawanna Watershed. There will be large public events and smaller educational activities with schools, senior centers and community groups and LRCA members.

The Anniversary celebration series will include a major kickoff event, a free cocktail party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, Sept. 7 at the Carbondale Grand Hotel.

The Celebration will conclude with a Community Recognition Awards Dinner and Gala to be held in the Ballroom of the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple The Dinner /Gala will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, Oct. 5. That is the anniversary of the actual date in 1987 when the LRCA filed its articles of incorporation. In mid-September, the LRCA will announce the names of several individuals and organizations that will be recognized with awards at the dinner.

American Sign Language Classes

The Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children is offering various levels of classes for those wishing to learn or continue learning American Sign Language.

Level I, II and III classes are offered on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., from September 20 to October 25. Cost is $65.00 per person.

Flag Day Ceremony

On Saturday, June 10th at 10:00 a.m., a Flag Day ceremony will be held at Sherwood Park in Dunmore. The service will be presented by members of the Boy Scout Troop 66, sponsored by the Dunmore Presbyterian Church, and the Sherwood Youth Association. The public is invited to attend.

Scranton Shakespeare Festival Tony Awards Party

Members of the Scranton Shakespeare Festival Tony Party planning committee finalized plans for the second annual celebration to be held on Sunday, June 11, 7:30 p.m. at the Scranton Club.

Guests are welcome to walk the red carpet during “A Night at the Tonys.” Cost is $35 for guests and $50 for patrons who will be recognized during the event. Price includes live entertainment, light fare and cocktails. Tickets are available at the door or by visiting scrantonshakes.com. SS. Anthony and Rocco’s Annual Italian Festival

SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish Italian Festival will be held Aug. 11, 12, and 13, 2017 at St. Rocco’s Church Grounds, 122 Kurtz St., Dunmore, featuring food, games and live entertainment. The Festival opens Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday Following the Noon Mass and Procession.

Dunmore High School Class Reunion

Dunmore Summer Farmers Market

Plenty of arts, crafts, fruits and veggies will soon be available at the Dunmore Farmers Market. The market will open for the season at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24th, and will run through Labor Day, September 2. Vendors will be set up in the empty lot along the 200 block of East Drinker Street in the Dunmore Corners..

Borough Councilman Thomas Hallinan and Dunmore Historical Society President Karl Wegford first organized the market last June. It’s believed to be the first of its kind in the borough.

Diocese of Scranton Movie Night

The Diocese of Scranton is hosting an outdoor family movie night experience for all to enjoy this summer while raising funds for the Diocesan Catholic School System. Disney-Pixar’s new film, “CARS 3”, will be presented by the Diocese at the Circle Drive-In, Dickson City on Wednesday, June 21, with gates opening at 7 p.m. and showtime at 8:45 p.m. (or dusk). This second annual Catholic Schools Movie Night is open to the public. The cost is $10 per car. Each child will receive a free popcorn. Marywood University Hosts “Camp Crescendo”

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will host Camp Crescendo, a two-week dynamic musical experience for instrumental and vocal students in grades 7-12. One- and two-week options are available. Day or overnight options for Camp Crescendo are available during week one only, which features band, orchestra, and choir and will run from July 2-8, 2017. Week two, which features jazz and improvisation, will run as a day-only option from July 24-28, 2017.

“Forbidden Broadway”

Phoenix Theatrics will present “Forbidden Broadway,” a music revue mocking popular shows such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” “Les Miserables,” Spamalot,” “Rent” and “A Chorus Line” and featuring a 22-person cast on Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 25, at 2 and 7 p.m. at Phoenix Performing Arts Centre, 409 Main Street, Duryea. Volunteer Fire Company Picnic

Elmhurst-Roaring Brook Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual picnic on June 21, 22, 23 and 24 at the picnic grounds located off Route 435 in Elmhurst. Grounds will open on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 5 p.m. Homemade food will be available. Featured on June 21 will be a car show with DJ Paul; June 22, parade at 7 p.m. and music by Take 3; June 23, music by Hell Yo, and June 24, music by Old Friends. Proceeds will help fund fire/rescue services.

Motorcycle Ride to Benefit Griffin Pond

The sixth annual Griffin Pond Animal Shelter Motorcycle Ride fundraiser, in conjunction with the Dickson City Train Station and Legends Saloon, will be held on Sunday, June 11, at Legends Saloon, 750 Boulevard Ave., Dickson City. All money raised will be used exclusively to fund the Griffin Pond Shelter Veterinarian Care account for sick and injured animals at the shelter.

The Griffin Pond Animal Shelter at 967 Griffin Pond Rd, South Abington Township, PA 18411 is not funded by any state or federal funds. Donations will be accepted at Legends Saloon for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

All licensed motorcycle riders are invited. Registration is $20 per motorcycle rider and $15 per motorcycle passenger. Registration will be from 9 to 11 a.m.. with the motorcucles departing promptly at 11 a.m. from Legends Saloon. The escorted motorcycle ride will proceed to Arlo’s Tavern, 10340 Rte 171, Uniondale, PA.

Motorcycle Riders are asked to return back to Legends Saloon, Dickson City no later than 3:00 p.m. for food and music. The public is invited to attend.

Low Cost Vaccination Clinic

In Pursuit of Grace, Dunmore, is partnering with Bunker Hill Vet Hospital for its annual Low Cost Vaccination Clinic on Saturday June 10, from 9am to 11 a.m. at 1702 Cedar Ave., Scranton. Vaccination costs are $6 for rabies; $14 for distemper, and nail clippings, $5. Flea and tick medication will be available for purchase. All dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier. All cats must be in a carrier; one cat per carrier. No appointment is necessary.
