Remembrance walk

Hundreds of walkers are expected to pause and remember their loved ones in a unique and special way at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Remembrance Walk on Saturday, Oct. 7 at McDade Park for the first time since 2019. The event did not take place in 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will kick off at 10. The Wright Center is the presenting sponsor. 

The one-mile walk around scenic McDade Park is wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly. The $30 registration fee includes lunch and a long-sleeve t-shirt with a customizable pin-on bib, so participants can walk in memory of a loved one. 

Teams of five or more are $20 each and children 12 and under are free. There will be a DJ, basket raffle, children’s activities, a ceremonial bell ringing, and ice cream. Proceeds from the walk will help support Hospice of the Sacred Heart programs and services. 

The event will begin with an opening prayer by Msgr. Thomas M. Muldowney, Pastor, Saint Catherine of Siena Parish, Moscow. WNEP-TV anchor and reporter, Stacy Lange, will start the walk. Diane Baldi is Hospice of the Sacred Heart CEO.

Actors Circle season

Actors Circle of Scranton has announced the rest of its 42nd season which opened with “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani, and will be followed by “The Woman in Black” by Stephen Mallatratt, book by Susan Hill, to be presented in November. 

In 2024 the group will  continue with “Ravenscroft” by Don Nigro, “Harvey” by Mary Chase, “The Case of the Missing Will” by Agatha Christie, adapted for the stage by Robert Spalletta, and “You Can’t Take it With You” by George F. Kaufman.

Marywood open houses

Prospective undergraduate and graduate students can attend designated Open Houses at Marywood University this fall to learn more about specific programs and educational opportunities.

Two Undergraduate Open Houses are scheduled, including Saturday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Nov. 11, for prospective undergraduate students. Registration for both events begins at 9 a.m. in the Fireplace Lounge at the Nazareth Student Center on the University’s campus. 

Prospective students can meet with current Marywood students, faculty, and coaches. There will be opportunities to explore academic departments, learn more about the admissions process, and tour campus. Information sessions with admissions and financial aid counselors also will be available. The event includes a continental breakfast and a complimentary lunch. 

Prospective graduate students can attend a Graduate Open House on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9:30 at Nazareth Student Center. The event includes an overview of Marywood, a financial aid and scholarship session, and meetings with faculty. Optional tours of campus also are available. The Open House is being held on site at Marywood’s Scranton Campus; there are no virtual options for this event.

Sandlot tryouts

Sandlot tryouts for 2024 will be hosted on Oct. 23, 26, and 27, at the University of Scranton. Ages 7 to 12u tryouts will be at 7 p.m. for the Spring Season (April-June), while ages 13-18U start at 8 p.m. for the Summer Season (May-August). All ages will begin practice in January. Cost is $10. Takeout pasta dinner

The Women’s Society of St. Joseph Melkite Catholic Church, North St. Frances Cabrini Avenue, West Scranton, is sponsoring its annual Takeout Pasta Dinner, on Thursday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 6 pm. Penne with meatballs, salad, bread, and dessert will be served. Adults tickets are $10, with children ages 6-10 being $5. Youth performance

Electric City Rocks will present an evening of an electrifying performance on Saturday, Oct. 7, all in the name of championing youth in the performing arts in Northeastern PA. The event will be held from 7 to 10. Tickets are available at https://www.universe.com/ecrocks.  Radio Flashback, a standout tribute band from the East Coast, will play classic 70’s & 80’s hits. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Chevy Chase at Kirby

Legendary comedian Chevy Chase is coming to the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Dec. 17,  with a screening of the holiday classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, followed by an in-person Q&A. Ticket Prices are $40.00, $66.00, and $100.00 plus fees. VIP Packages are $150 and $250 plus fees and include premium seat and a post-show photo op with Chevy following the Q&A.

Magic for Humans

The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple will present the Justin Willman Magic for Humans In Person Tour on Nov. 30 at 7:30 PM in its Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Theatre. Willman is a magician and a comedian known for his hit Netflix series “Magic for Humans. Willman also served as a host for “Baking Impossible,” “Cupcake Wars” and “Win, Lose or Draw.” 

Tickets range from $45.15 – $58.30 with a VIP Package available. Prices are subject to change. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and a cash bar and concessions will be available. DCCHS/O’Hara reunion

The Dunmore Central Catholic High School/Bishop O’Hara Class of 1973  will have a meeting to update and discuss their 50th class reunion scheduled in the fall.  Come Thursday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the VFW Post #6082, 123 Electric St., Peckville. All classmates are invited to attend this meeting.  We are still in need an update of 50+ classmates addresses. Penn State Scranton golf fundraiser

Penn State Scranton Athletics will be hosting a fundraising golf tournament on Sept. 15, at the Golf Course at Paupack Hills, Greentown. The tournament, named for former Penn State Scranton CEO, James D. Gallagher, will be captain and crew format and begin with a continental breakfast at 8:30 am followed by a shotgun start at 10 a.m. The event is a fundraiser for the 13 Varsity Athletic teams at Penn State Scranton including Men’s and Women’s Golf, Cross Country, Track & Field, Soccer, Basketball, Women’s Volleyball, Baseball & Softball.  Proceeds will supplement individual team needs and enhance the student-athlete experience while they compete. Funds raised will be used for team travel, including spring break trips and national events, and to improve athletic facilities.

Paws in the Park

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter will host Paws in the Park on Sunday, Aug. 13, from noon to 3:30 p.m. at McDade Park. This event will have entertainment and music, over 40 local vendors, food trucks, homemade ice cream, adoptable pets from the shelter, raffles, 50/50, and Jurassic Raptor 570. The event is pet and family-friendly, with games for the kids, sprinklers, and pools for the dogs. Tickets are $10 per person, and kids under 12 get in for free. Bring sunscreen and hats.

Casino bus trip

The Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians will host a bus trip to Wind Creek Casino, Bethlehem, on Saturday, Sept. 30.  The bus will depart from St. Patrick’s Church, Jackson Street, West Scranton at 10 a.m. and depart for home at 5 p.m.  The cost of the trip is $30 with a $25 rebate.  This Complex includes multiple restaurants and outlet shops to explore. Actors Circle plays

Actors Circle presents “A Celebration of Short Plays – Celebrating Our Local Talent” on August 17, 18, 19, and 20, at Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, Scranton. Good Things Festival

On Saturday, Aug. 12,, eleven local and regional music acts will come together at the Scranton Iron Furnaces for the second annual Good Things are Happening Festival. Headlining the festival is Scranton’s own homegrown indie rocker, Petal, consisting of Kiley Lotz and rotating touring musicians. Other acts include James Barrett, Wild Pink, Alyssa Lazar, The Tribe, Little Hag, Esta Coda, Channel 65, Glass Mask, Brendan Brisk Band, and We’re From Antarctica. St. Mary’s Villa Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, Aug. 28, at Glen Oak Country Club, Clarks Summit. Golfer registration is $150 and includes carts, lunch, cocktail hour and dinner.

Lebanese Food Fest

The 22nd annual Lebanese-American Food Fest will be held Aug. 11, 12 and 13 at St. Joseph Melkite Greek-Catholic Church, 130 N. St. Frances Cabrini Avenue (off lower Jackson Street), West Scranton, featuring Lebanese food and pastries, local picnic favorites, and variety baskets. Hours are Friday and Saturday from 4 to p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. Holy Day services will be held daily.

Car show & barbecue

Saint Ann Basilica Parish will have its 9th Annual Car Show and Chicken BBQ on the grounds of the Basilica in West Scranton on Sunday, Aug. 6.  Gates open at 8 a.m. and the show runs from 9 a.m. thru 4 p.m., rain or shine.  All vehicles are welcome with pre-registration at $10 and $15 on the day of the show.  Chicken BBQ is pre-order only at $12 each from noon to 4 p.m.  For the early birds, breakfast sandwiches will be available for purchase.  To pre-register your vehicle or to pre-order your dinner or for more information, please call the parish rectory at 570-342-5166.  All proceeds benefit Saint Ann Basilica Parish. 

Golf tournament

The North Pocono Public Library (NPPL) has announced Joe Castrogiovanni as the Guest of Honor for its third Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, Aug. 7 at 1p.m. at Elmhurst Country Club, Moscow. Cochairs, Jim Coles and Ed Steinmetz invited Castrogiovanni to participate to honor his legacy in the North Pocono community while also raising funds for the library.

Cancer Survivors Day

Cancer Survivors Day is a dual-location event set for Saturday, Sept. 23, at Kirby Park, Wilkes-Barre, and Saturday, Sept. 3,0 at McDade Park, Scranton. Event registration begins at 10 a.m. and the program begins at 10:30 a.m.  It’s free of charge although pre-registration is encouraged. The events feature the Circle of Survivors, an activity during which every person in attendance can share inspirational words and support about their cancer experience. Conversation and light refreshments provide an additional opportunity for connection and support. Cancer survivors, their families, and friends, as well as caregivers and healthcare professionals are invited to attend.

Mannheim Steamroller

NAC Entertainment and the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple have announced that the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Show will be performing in NEPA this year for one night only, on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m.

This year’s show will feature classic Christmas hits from the Mannheim Steamroller holiday albums along with multimedia effects in an intimate setting. Chip Davis, founder and creator of Mannheim Steamroller, will direct and co-produce tour performances with MagicSpace Entertainment.

Tickets for this show go on sale Friday, July 28 at 10 a.m., and will be available in person at the Scranton Cultural Center box office, and online at BroadwayInScranton.com.

Easter Egg Hunt

The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by Dunmore Lions Club, Dunmore Rotary, Dunmore Police Department and Dunmore Fire Department will be held on Saturday, April 8, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Playground, Hill and Cooney Streets, for children ages 11 and under.

Hiring lifeguards

Lackawanna County is looking for lifeguards at its lakes and pool and four parks–McDade, Aylesworth, Covington, and Merli-Sarnoski. All applicants must be Red Cross certified. The country will be paying lifeguards $15 per hour and will also reimburse individuals for the certification cost.

Library of Things

The Albright Memorial Library in Scranton now circulates more than books, DVDs, eBooks, puzzles, board games, and videos games. Need a pair of binoculars so you can identify the orange bird that is in your tree? Need a basin wrench to fix a leaky sink? Going camping and need Internet access? With a Lackawanna County System Library card, you can now borrow items like a projector screen, Cricut Joy machine, Internet Hot Spot, Roku, digital slide converter, binoculars, air compressor, laminator, candle maker and more.  

The items can be borrowed for one week with 2 renewals. In some cases, like for the laminator and button machine, supplies can be purchased from the library.

Host-for-a-Day

Saint Francis of Assisi Kitchen is conducting a celebration for its Host‑for‑a‑Day campaign on Wednesday, May 3, at Fiorelli’s, Peckville beginning at 6 p.m. Donations to the campaign of $100 or more help to sponsor a free meal for up to 250 needy men, women and children. Each contributor and a guest is invited to attend. RSVPs are required by April 3.

Marywood open house

Marywood University will hold a spring undergraduate open house for high school students and their parents on Saturday, April 15. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the Fireplace Lounge at the Nazareth Student Center on the University’s campus, and the last campus tour departs at 1:30 p.m. 

The event will include informative tours of the campus, complimentary continental breakfast and lunch for all guests, and the opportunity to meet with current Marywood students, faculty, and athletic coaches. Information sessions with admissions and financial aid counselors will also be available.

Leadership Symposium

Marywood University’s School of Business and Global Innovation (SBGI) is hosting a Leadership Symposium, “The Value in Values-led Business,” on Wednesday, April 19, from 3-7 p.m., in the Latour Room, Nazareth Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. All attendees will receive a ticket for a door prize, which will be drawn at the conclusion of the event. 

Chris Speicher, Ph.D., SBGI Executive Director, will offer welcoming remarks, and the event will feature a student/alumni panel discussion at 3:15 p.m., followed by a poster session and networking. Light refreshments will be served at 4:30 p.m. Daniel J. Santaniello, President and CEO of Fidelity Bank, will deliver the keynote address at 5:30 p.m.
