Mother’s Day tea

The Catherine McAuley Center will be hosting a Mother’s Day Tea Party to celebrate mothers and other women in our lives. This event is open to the community. Refreshments, finger sandwiches, and dessert will be served.

In addition to the tea party fare, there will be children’s activities, a family photo station, door prizes, raffles and so much more! 

The Mother’s Day Tea Party will be located at The Space at Olive, 541 Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, on Saturday, April 27, from noon to 2 p.m.. Tickets are $25 per adult, and up to four children up to the age of 18 are included on the ticket.

There are sponsorship, donation, and volunteer opportunities.

Marywood open house

Marywood University will hold a spring undergraduate open house for high school students and their parents on Saturday, April 13. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the Fireplace Lounge at the Nazareth Student Center on the University’s campus, and the last campus tour departs at 1:30 p.m. 

The event will include informative tours of the campus, complimentary continental breakfast and lunch for all guests, and the opportunity to meet with current Marywood students, faculty, and athletic coaches. Information sessions with admissions and financial aid counselors will also be available.

Ballroom classes

United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) Mid Valley Senior Community Center starts its newest free activity, Ballroom Dance Classes with Vince Brust, on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 9 a.m. Any interested older adults 60 ande over can register by calling 570-489-4415, no experience or partner necessary. 

The classes are offered in partnership with Arts in Education, Lackawanna County Area on Aging, the Pennsylvania Department on Aging, and the Scranton Area Community Foundation.

Designer bag bingo

St. Catherine of Siena Parish Altar & Rosary Society will conduct a Designer Bag Bingo on Sunday, April 14,in Kelly Hall, located at 220 Church St., Moscow. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and bingo begins at 1:30. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Admission includes 20 regular bingo games. Additional bonus bingo games available for $5 each or 4/$15.  Ample free parking, handicap accessible. 

Delicious homemade foods, beverages, a 50/50 and a huge basket raffle tickets also available for purchase during the event. Tickets can be purchased in the parish office. SCC St. Patrick’s party

The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple will host its annual St. Patrick’s Parade Day Party on Saturday, March 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and live entertainment will be provided by Across the Pond. In addition, several parade performers will continue their acts at the SCC for all party-goers to enjoy, including bagpipers, step dancers and more!

A cash bar and light fare will be available for purchase. The 2024 St. Patrick’s Parade Day Party is sponsored by The Society of Irish Women, The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick – Lackawanna County. Comfort Suites Scranton and LI Verrastro, and is supported by Lackawanna County and the PA Council on the Arts.

Catholic Choral concert

 In a 75 year tradition of inspiring prayer and meditation through music, the Catholic Choral Society will present its annual Lenten concert at St. Martin of Tours Church, 8175 State Route 492, Jackson, PA, 18825,on Sunday, March 10 at 4 p.m. Pastor of the church is Rev. John C Ruth.

The concerts are open to the public free of charge. There will be a goodwill offering.   

Brenda Grunza and Lois Ostrowski are co-presidents of the Catholic Choral Society. Ann Manganiello is music director of this group while Linda Houck is accompanist.  Church breakfast

The Women’s Society of St. Joseph Melkite Catholic Church, N.St. Frances Cabrini Avenue, West Scranton, is sponsoring its annual St. Joseph Day Breakfast, Sunday, March 17 from 9  a.m. to 1 p.m. The abundant eat-in or take-out meal includes eggs, scratch pancakes, home fries, olives, honey-baked ham, breads, juice and coffee. Adults tickets are $12 and children ages 6-10 are $6. Take-Out is $10/$6 with no beverages. Fragrant St. Joseph Bread will be available in two loaf packages for $5 until sold out. Classic Rock Show

The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple announces The Classic Rock Show – World Tour 2024, kicking off in Scranton on March 21 at 7:30 p.m.. This production by CMP Entertainment features all the hits from Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, AC/DC. The Beatles, Dire Straits, Meat Loaf, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd. The Who, Boston, Toto, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac and more.

Tickets start at $44.30. A VIP Sound Check Experience Pre-Show Package is available for an additional fee.

Architecture Day

Marywood University will host a School of Architecture Day for prospective students on Tuesday, April 2, at the Center for Architectural Studies, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The deadline to register for this free event is Friday, March 29.

Prospective students will be able to speak with faculty, tour the facilities, hear from student groups and student council, experience the studio culture in architecture and interior architecture classes, and tour the Center for the Living City’s Living Lab at Marywood. A complimentary lunch is included.

Free prom dresses

Salon Joy will host its sixth annual free prom dress drive this year at the Gouldsboro Train Station on April 26-28 from11 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Gently-used and new prom dresses as well as shoes, jewelry and accessories  are being collected at both locations of Salon Joy at 731 S. Main St., Old Forge, and 243 State Road 436, Gouldsboro. 

Local seamstresses such Classique Clothes Boutique & more, join in to help students across NEPA with free gowns, men’s attire and more for all occasions. We also collect bridal and bridesmaid dresses, and men’s formal clothes.

Primus concert

For the first time in nearly 12 years, rock icons Primus will perform at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Monday, May 6, with the show beginning  at 8 p.m. and doors opening at 7.

Holiday Train Display

A holiday train display open houses will be held by Anthracite Hi-Railers, an O-Gauge model railroad display, at the Shoprite Plaza, Daleville, located at  921 Drinker Turnpike, Covington Township on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m.. The open houses are free for all to enjoy and are handicapped accessible.

Holiday Concerts

Marywood University’s Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance has announced several holiday concerts. The following concerts and events presented by the department are free and open to the public.

The concert schedule for December includes:

December 9: Kristin Ventricelli and Kaitlynn Gingerlowski, Senior Recital, 11 a.m.,  Marian Chapel, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life;

 December 9: Guitar Ensemble Holiday Concert, 7:30 p.m., Marian Chapel, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life – Join us for a program that includes music by Francisco Tárrega, the 19th-century Spanish virtuoso, combined with live Jazz improvisation! The program also includes a few Christmas classics, such as “Silent Night.”

December 10: Chamber Singers Holiday Concert, 2 p.m., Marian Chapel, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life – The annual Christmas concert by the Marywood University Chamber Singers will feature sacred and secular music and carols by Pierre de Manchicourt, Richard Rodney Bennett, Abbie Betinis, Kevin Allen, John Milne, and John Orfe.

 December 13: General Recital, 8 p.m.,  Marian Chapel, Swartz Center for Spiritual Life .

Transfer Tuesdays

Marywood University has set several dates in the fall and winter for its Transfer Tuesdays program. Transfer Tuesday events are for current or former college students, at all stages of their college journey, who are considering transferring to Marywood University. 

Transfer Tuesdays opportunities will take place on the following Tuesdays: December 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and on January 9, 2024, from 1-6 p.m. Those interested in the fall/winter Transfer Tuesdays events can schedule an appointment every half hour during the time frames established for each date, and optional tours will be offered at select times.

Registered visitors can discuss financial aid and scholarship options, transfer credits, take a tour of campus, review credits for transfer eligibility, and complete an application for admission. Marywood University’s spring semester begins on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.
