Wind Band Concert

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will host its Senior Wind Band Celebration 10thAnniversary performance on Saturday, Jan. 25. The free concert will take place in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts on the University’s campus.

The Celebration Band will be led by conductor Lauren Reynolds at 7 p.m. and by Patrick Erwin. at 7:30 p.m. The Honor Band will take the stage at 8 p.m., led by conductor Donald Schofield. 

The festival includes local and regional students from the following high schools : Abington Heights, Blue Mountain, Blue Ridge , Crestwood, Dallas, Delaware Valley, Dunmore, East Stroudsburg (North and South), Eldred Central, Elk Lake, Greater Nanticoke Area, Hazleton Area, Honesdale, Lackawanna Trail, Lakeland, Mountain View, NEPA Homeschool, North Pocono, North Schuylkill, Pocono Mountain East, Pocono Mountain West, Port Jervis, Scranton, Susquehanna Community, Tunkhannock, Valley View, Wilkes-Barre Area, Wyoming Area Secondary, and Wyoming Valley West.

Beijing Bamboo Orchestra

Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department, in conjunction with an invitation to the community by Sister Mary Persico, IHM, Ed.D., president of Marywood University, will host the Bamboo Orchestra of Beijing, China, for a special performance of professional musicians on Monday, Jan. 20. 

The performance will take place in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts, at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-show by the Marywood University Percussion Ensemble at 7:20 p.m. on the University’s Campus. The free performances are Marywood’s gift to the community. Marywood University is the only college campus venue at which the world-renowned orchestra will appear during its U.S. tour, which includes performances in major cities.

Actors Circle Presents “Dearly Departed”

Actors Circle will present Dearly Departed by David Botrell and Jesse Jones on Dec. 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 15 at Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, Scranton. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.  Sundays at 2 p.m.

Actors Circle brings back this drop-dead funny crowd favorite from 2008. Not since Steel Magnolias has a more colorful and dysfunctional group of Southern eccentrics gathered below the Mason-Dixon line. When the patriarch of the Turpin family keels over, the struggle to get him buried involves the whole clan, including the not-so-grieving widow who wants to put “Mean and Surly” on the tombstone.

Directed by Mark Fryer, members of the cast include: Jeff Ginsberg, Linda C. Griffiths, Kelly Kapacs, Victoria Kusy, Lorrie Loughney, Justin O’Hearn, Bernard M. Ott, Brink Powell, Harry Powell, Tony Ranielli, Marcie Herman Riebe, Cathy Rist Strauch, a native of Dunmore, and Amanda VanBuskirk.

“Festival of Trees” To Kick Off Dec. 14th

The annual Festival of Trees exhibit and “Toys for Tots” fundraiser will be held at the Marketplace at Steamtown from Dec. 14 – Jan. 12.  The exhibit opens with a Preview Party fundraiser on Friday, Dec. 13. The Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department is currently seeking non-profit organizations, businesses, churches and schools to sponsor and decorate a tree. All funds raised from the trees go directly to “Toys for Tots.”  Participants must supply their own artificial tree. 

This year the event looks to celebrate diversity with the theme Here, There and Everywhere! Celebrating Fall and Winter Traditions from Around the World.

 The cost to sponsor a tree is $50 for non-profits, schools and small businesses (50 or under employees) and $100 for corporations (over 50 employees).  

To register a tree, send checks or money orders, made payable to “Toys for Tots,” to Chris Calvey, Lackawanna County Arts and Culture Department, 300 Cliff Street, Scranton, PA 18503.

Depending on space availability, trees may be registered until Dec, 12. All trees must be set-up by Dec. 13.
