Preparations underway for 49th annual Nutcracker performances
Ballet Theatre of Scranton. under the artistic direction of Joanne Arduino, will kick off the holiday season with its 49th annual performances of The Nutcracker at the Theater at North over Thanksgiving weekend on Friday, November 29, Saturday November 30 ,and Sunday December 1 . Please note the new performance times each day at 12 noon and 5:30 pm. This traditional gift to the community has offered free public performances since 1976. Free tickets can be picked up at the box office at the Theater at North on the day of the specific performance, two hours prior to curtain.
This year, an inaugural pilot, sensory friendly performance is being offered to an invited audience as well as the traditional educational performances for area school children.
Over 100 local dancers from ages 9- adult will perform and will feature Elizabeth Schneider and Laura Durkin as Sugarplum Fairy (each in three performances); Gianna Vachino as Clara; John Roman Vachino as the Nutcracker Prince; Brennan Connor as Snow King; Gabrielle Snyder as Snow Queen, and Valentina Ruiz Giraldo as Dewdrop. Professional guest artists George Sanders of Twyla Tharp Company NYC, and Sanford Placide, previously of Dance Theater of Harlem, NYC),will perform as Cavalier in three performances each. Grant to help cover costs for new pickleball courts in Dunmore
State Reps. Kyle T. Donahue, Bridget M. Kosierowski and Kyle Mullins recently announced that more than $9.3 million in both statewide Local Share Account Program and Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program grants have been approved for projects throughout Lackawanna County, including $170,366 to Dunmore Borough to construct four pickleball courts in an unutilized section of McHale Park near the Dunmore Community Center.
The project consists of constructing the new ball courts and adjacent parking area. The courts will have lighting and ample drainage.
Other grants being awarded include: $1.05 million to Valley View School Districtt; $1 million to the Scranton School District; $950,000 to North Pocono School District; $775,000 to Abington Heights School District; $733,677 to South Abington Township in collaboration with Clarks Summit Borough and Abington Heights School District; $618,816 to Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton; $500,000 to Covington Township; $500,000 to The Jewish Community Center of Scranton is seeking to build a new playground for its early learning center ; $450,000 to the Lakeland School District; $300,000 to Mid-Valley School District; $300,000 to Carbondale City; $300,000 to the Scranton Lackawanna Industrial Building Co.; $270,000 to Blakely Borough; $228,280 to Camp Freedom in Wayne County; $200,000 to Jefferson Township Sewer Authority; $200,000 to Moscow Sewer Authority; $165,802 to Dickson City Borough;
$150,000 to Throop Borough; $115,000 to Jermyn Borough;$101,785 to Scranton City for the Deutsch Institute andt Robison Park repairs; $100,000 to the Spring Brook Township Sewer Authority; $80,000 to Archbald Borough, and Vandling Borough.
