New Trail to Connect Dunmore to Elmhurst Reservoir

State Rep. Kyle Mullins, (D) Lackawanna, announced $2.1 million in state grants to fund improvement projects in several communities throughout the 112th Legislative District, including Dunmore Borough.

“From pedestrian safety to land redevelopment and conservation, these projects will have a tangible impact on our residents and the local economy,” Mullins said. “I’m grateful to Senator John Blake and borough officials for their partnership in advocating for these projects that will benefit our common constituency.”

Dunmore Borough, and Elmhurst and Roaring Brook townships will receive $1.5 million for development of the North Pocono Trail. Work will include construction of 4 miles of trail between East Drinker Street in Dunmore to the Elmhurst Reservoir.

Elements of the project include a pedestrian bridge and trailhead, along with fencing, gates, ADA access, signage and other related improvements. Of note, the trail is a former rail line purchased by Lackawanna County in the 1980s, which has remained undeveloped.

A bridge associated with the trail will enable the state Transportation Department to refurbish an Interstate 84 bridge above, creating an opportunity for the county to leverage the construction to build the trail.

Other projects include Blakely Borough, which will  receive $350,000 to install new sidewalks, curbing and 30 ADA-accessible ramps, and Archbald Borough which will  receive $265,000 to extend East Avenue over the Wildcat Creek to grant access to two mine-scarred sites at the former Sturges Colliery.

Grant funding for the North Pocono Trail project was awarded through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Recreation and Conservation program, which focuses on conserving and protecting state waterways and outdoor recreational opportunities.
