Brenda Sacco Named Lackawanna County Economic Development Director

Brenda SaccoLackawanna County government has  announced Brenda N. Sacco, Dunmore, as acting Economic Development Director for Lackawanna County.   The appointment was effective March 6.

As the County’s acting economic chief, Ms. Sacco will be responsible for ongoing marketing strategies and incentives to promote the area as a location destination.  She will also be involved in overseeing the department’s loan programs portfolio and housing initiatives, handling planning and community development activities, supervising staff, representing the office at various real estate associations’ meetings and conferences, working with the Governor’s Action Team and other organizations to assist the local business base and to provide site tours to prospects for potential expansion here, to mention a cross section of her new duties.

Brenda began her financial career in 1994 in New York City with Credit Lyonnais as a Financial Analyst. She later joined Lehman Brothers, working as a vice president for eight years with her duties focusing on the equity markets.  

She moved back to the area and joined First National Community Bank as a vice president.   

Brenda began her career with Lackawanna County in 2013 as Deputy Director of Finance and Operations for the Department of Planning and Economic Development, overseeing planning, economic and community development, and finance activities.  She was also responsible for managing the day-to-day operations.

Ms. Sacco has obtained several professional licenses including, General Securities Representative (Series 7, 66 and 31), Pennsylvania Life and Health Insurance, and a Pennsylvania Real Estate License.  She is a Board member of MetroAction and is Vice President of the Veterans Resource Coalition of NEPA.

She is a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and Drexel University, earning a degree in Accounting and Finance from the LeBow College of Business.

Robert H. Spitz Foundation Offers Grant Funding for Area Nonprofits

Spitz Foundation, administered by the Scranton Area Community Foundation, announces its 2019 grant cycle and invites local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations to apply for grant funding. Priority areas for 2019 include veterans’ affairs and veteran-oriented programs; animal welfare, including programs that support humane education, adoption for homeless animals, spay/neuter, and rescue efforts, and which help the economically disadvantaged and the elderly to keep their companion animals; and support for Jewish culture, heritage, community, and cemetery support.

Organizations interested in receiving an invitation to submit a grant application may submit a letter of intent (LOI) summarizing the project or program including the amount of funding requested via email to Cathy Fitzpatrick, Scranton Area Community Foundation Grants and Scholarships Manager: Cathyf@safdn.org. Letters of intent are due by 11:59 p.m. on April 15, 2019. Letters of intent will be reviewed and qualifying organizations will be invited to submit a completed application. Completed applications will be due June 1, 2019.

The Robert H. Spitz Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports initiatives and programs serving the residents of Lackawanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania. Robert H. Spitz was born in Scranton and was a 1955 graduate of Scranton Central High School and the University of Miami, Florida. Before retirement, Spitz had been employed by the U.S. Department of Labor and was also the owner of several local Arby’s restaurants. The Robert H. Spitz Foundation was established from his estate in 2015. To date, the Robert H. Spitz Foundation has provided over $1.3 million in funding to the community.

20th Annual Free Easter Party Set for Sunday April 14th

The O’Malley Family will be hosting their 20th annual Free Easter party for the youth within the community on Sunday, April 14, , at Keyser Valley Community Center from 1 to 3 p.m. Children from pre-school to fifth grade are all welcome to join in the fun and meet the Easter Bunny.

The party includes a picture with the Easter Bunny, Goodfella’s Pizza, orange drink, a half -pound chocolate bunny, a McDonald’s cheeseburger and fries coupon from the Keyser Avenue location, a free Kids Meal from the Texas Roadhouse, Utz potato chips, and a Krispy Kreme donut.
