YMCA ribbon cutting

The Greater Scranton YMCA, along with the Scranton Chamber of Commerce, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at the Y’s new Early Learning Center. The 6,300 square foot center is located at 1015 Underwood Road, Olyphant, and is licensed to serve up to 125 children ages zero through five.

The waitlist for services at the Greater Scranton YMCA is full at 150 children. The Y has completed renovations at the new center in Olyphant, updating eight classrooms. Additionally, thanks in part to grant funding from the Scranton Area Community Foundation, the Y will also add an outdoor playground.

Golf Tournament

The Lackawanna College Athletics Department announces the return of the Lackawanna College annual Golf Tournament to be held on Monday, June 3, at Elmhurst Country Club. Attendees are invited to a day of camaraderie and competition featuring activities like hole sponsors, closest-to-the-pin contests, longest drive competitions, door prizes and raffles. 

The tournament starts with registration and lunch at 11:30 a.m. in the club house, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. At 5:30 p.m., dinner will be in the club house, with prizes awarded and raffle items drawn. 

The tournament is open to teams of four and individual golfers, starting at $200 for single golfer registration, and $800 for a team. Proceeds from this event will support the needs of  student-athletes through various athletic department programming.

Golfers and their teams interested in participating are encouraged to go to register early online. Parties interested in sponsoring the event can also find additional information on sponsorship packages and ways to get involved.

Marywood art exhibit

The Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art at Marywood University is featuring the exhibit, Illuminated: Color Photography in the Maslow Collection, though June 28. The Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The exhibit and related events are free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the Art Department’s courses in Color Photography, Black and White Photography, and History of Photography, this exhibition examines various subjects, forms, and methods used by photographers from the 1970s through the 1990s. 

Featured artists include: Harry Callahan, Robert Cumming, David Haxton, David Hockney, Barbara Kasten, Joel Meyerowitz, Denny Moers, Walter Winings Nelson, Ellen Phelan, Sandy Skoglund, Todd Watts, and William Wegman.

Mark Normand tour

Comedian Mark Normand will play the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts as part of his “Ya Don’t Say” tour on Friday, December 13 at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $35, $49.75, and $59.75 plus fees. A VIP package for $159.75 is available online only and includes: One Top Price Reserved Ticket in the best available seating and One Meet & Great with Mark Normand after the show.

Normand is becoming one of the most talked about touring comedians on the scene.  His recent one-hour Netflix special, SOUP TO NUTS  followed Normand’s self-released special, 2020’s “Out to Lunch” which amassed over 12 million views on YouTube.  He also starred on Netflix’s Season 3 of “The Stand Ups.”

Price is Right show

The F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts will play host to The Price is Right Live™ interactive stage show on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are online at ticketmaster.com, kirbycenter.org and at the F.M. Kirby Center Box Office in downtown Wilkes-Barre. A F.M.  

Alongside a celebrity host, randomly selected contestants play everyone’s favorite games like Plinko, Cliffhangers, The Big Wheel, and the fabulous Showcase.  The show features an array of fantastic prizes, from appliances and electronics to dream vacations and even a brand-new car. 

Swan Lake Ballet

The World Ballet Company will bring its production of Swan Lake to the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Nov.17, at 6 p.m. Ticket prices are $49, $59, $79 and $99 plus fees.Tickets can be purchased online at kirbycenter.org, ticketmaster.com, and at the F.M.
