Anthracite Opera Company to Present “Mainly Classical” on May 6th

Anthracite Opera Company will present Mainly Classical, a show featuring classic pieces from opera, including Rigoletto and Madam Butterfly, as well as Broadway tunes, on Sunday, May 6 at 3 p.m..  Directed by Anthracite founder, Gary Richards, the musical performance will be presented at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Anthracite Opera members performing for this show are: Erik Sparks, Ann Marie Dupre, Barbara Liberasky-Nowicki, Gary Richards, Jack Bernesky, Dennis  Fanucci, Jillian Kemmerer, Matthew Merolla, Leeann Lemperle, Cathy Rist Strauch, T.J. Worobey and Abigail Zieger. Dr. Lawrence Kauffman is accompanist. Cost for show only is $15, payable at the door.

A dinner is also planned for after the show at 5:30 p.m. at the Rossetti Estate & Trust for the Arts, located at 1005 Vine Street in Scranton.  Cost for dinner and show is $25. Dinner seating is limited.

Dinner includes: appetizers, main course, dessert, and entertainment featuring the barbershop quartet, Vocal Accord. Members are: Don Overdorff, Raleigh Bloch, Dane Bower and Lou Volpetti. Reservations are required for dinner, by contacting Gary Richards at 570-335-7702.

Art for Community Progress Report

lacka coLackawanna County Arts and Culture Department and The Scranton Area Community Foundation jointly released Art for Community Progress, the report generated from a series of Art for Social Change round tables sponsored by the two organizations and conducted in 2016.

The report provides a series of recommendations that arose from the conversations of over 150 individuals, representing a variety of organizations.  The goal of the series was to share ideas, discuss challenges, and offer resources to improve our community.

The four forums focused on the impact the arts have on various sectors of the community and explored opportunities for utilizing the arts to continue to enhance the quality of life in Lackawanna County.

 

Though many ideas were discussed, five key areas of focus emerged, which could have measurable impact on Lackawanna County’s future. They are:

  1. Creation of an Arts and Culture Asset Map
  2. Establishment of a Community Ambassadors Program
  3. Development of a Cross Sector Collaborative to Design a Large Scale Community Project
  4. Implementation of a Comprehensive Multi-sector Advisory Council focused on Equitable Transportation strategies
  5. Design of Leadership and Capacity Building Programs for the Arts and Culture Community

safSome actions have already taken place towards addressing some of these goals. The Scranton Area Community Foundation in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia has implemented an Equitable Transportation Council comprised of over 80 regional participants with the goal of making transportation more accessible.

In addition, Lackawanna County has formed an ARTS Engage! Task Force aiming to expand arts and culture programming in County services and to develop a large scale community project.  This group is also looking at working on creating an inventory of arts and culture opportunities and better ways to market events.

Actors Circle to Present “The Mousetrap”

From the best-selling author of all time and the Dame of murder-mystery storytelling, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap holds the world record for the longest running theatrical production, mesmerizing audiences for more than 60 years. The plot involves a snowstorm which traps a group of strangers with an unknown killer.

Actors Circle brings back this show to Providence Playhouse, having presented it in 2004, with Cathy Rist Strauch and Mike Lally reprising their roles, and Sam Troy, who then portrayed Trotter, now portraying Mr. Paravicini.  Sam Troy is also directing this show for the second time.

The production is planned for March 8-11 and 15-18 at Providence Playhouse, 1256 Providence Road, Scranton, on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission; $10 seniors, and $8 for students.
