Marywood recognized by Military Times

marywoodMarywood University offers the “Best for Vets: Colleges 2017” in veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic success, according to Military Times.

Marywood University was evaluated in several categories, including services offered, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties, veteran’s culture on campus, and academic outcomes.

“Best for Vets: Colleges 2017” is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members and military veterans and their families. From the more than 500 colleges that took part in this year’s detailed survey, 175 colleges were selected as “Best for Vets” Colleges.

Recently, Marywood University was ranked as a “Best Value” university among Masters level colleges in the North, according to the 2017 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges ranking. Marywood was also one of only two regional Universities ranked in the US News “Best Colleges for Veterans” category. According to US News, “These are the top-ranked schools in the 2017 Best Colleges rankings that participate in federal initiatives helping veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees.”

West Point Band to perform at Marywood

Test_WPAOG logoLine.Marywood University’s Wind Ensemble under the direction of David Romines, D.M.A., music, theatre, and dance department co-chair, associate professor and director of bands at Marywood University, and the West Point Band will perform a concert honoring America’s Veterans on Sunday, April 17,  at 4 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. This event is free and open to the public.

The concert will open at 4 p.m., with Marywood University’s Wind Ensemble. This 100-piece band will perform several patriotic selections and will end their performance with a version of Battle Hymn of the Republic, featuring Marywood University’s campus choir under the direction of Rick Hoffenberg, D.M.A., co-chair of the music, theatre, and dance department and associate professor of choral activities at Marywood University.

The second half of the show, beginning at approximately 5 p.m., is reserved for Marywood’s guests, The West Point Band, the Army’s oldest musical organization that continues to provide world-class music to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets and to serve as ambassadors of the United States Military Academy and the Army to local, national, and international communities. Its innovative programs and performances are enjoyed across the globe through regular television, radio, and recordings. The West Point Band traces its lineage back to a single drummer and fifer left to maintain the tradition of military music at West Point after the Revolutionary War. Over the next 200 years, the band has evolved into one of the most capable and versatile professional performing groups in the world.

Marywood group helps host Tails for Troops

svalogoMarywood University’s Student Veterans Alliance is teaming up with the non-profit organization, Dog T.A.G.S., to raise money to pair veterans diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or Military Sexual Trauma (MST), with rescued shelter or adopted dogs and put them through service dog training. The Tails for Troops event will take place at McDade Park, Scranton, on Saturday, April 16,  from 12–3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Dog T.A.G.S. is a non-profit organization that trains, assists, guides, and serves veterans who have been diagnosed by the Veteran’s Administration (VA) with PTSD, TBI, or MST, through the operation of a Service Dog Program. The rescued shelter or adopted dogs and the training are provided to the veterans free of charge. The program facilitates healing, assists in building self-confidence in the veterans, and helps increase bonds between the veterans and the dogs.

tags.jpgThe goal of the event is to raise enough money to assist wounded military veterans, while at the same time rescuing shelter dogs. There will be a K-9 Talent and Dog Pageant with first and second place overall pageant awards for most patriotic and best trick, along with local shelter dogs available for adoption, food and local vendor sales, basket and 50/50 raffles and music by Rock 107’s Prospector.
