Annual Memorial Day ceremony held at GAR soldiers’ plot

Lt Ezra S. Griffin Camp 8, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, held the 124th annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) soldiers’ plot in Dunmore Cemetery on Monday, May 29.

Keynote speaker was author and Waverly native Jim Remsen, author of “Embattled Freedom: Chronicle of a Fugitive-Slave Haven in the Wary North”, which highlights the abolition movement in NE PA and the challenges it faced before the Civil War.

Remsen remarks focused on Dunmore’s contributions in the immediate post-Civil War period as repatriated Union prisoners of war arrived in Philadelphia.
