Actors Circle presents “The Mountaintop” this month

Actors Circle will present The Mountaintop by American playwright Katori Hall, a fictional depiction of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s last night on earth set entirely in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel on the eve of his assassination in 1968. 

Show dates are Jan. 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, and 22, 2023. Thursday performances begin at 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. at Providence Playhouse,1256 Providence Rd., Scranton. 

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 seniors, $10 students. On Jan. 12, all tickets are $10. Call 570-342-9707 for reservations. 

The show is presented in association with the Greater Scranton MLK Commission, Cathy Hardaway, committee chairperson, with special grants from the Lackawanna County for the Arts and Culture, and The  Scranton Area Community Foundation. 

 Darrius Pantophlet will portray Martin Luther King, Jr., and Shanay Figueroa will portray Camae.

Directed by Charisse Peaten and Mark Fryer, Harry Adelman and Jeff Ginsberg are producers. Cathy Rist Strauch is publicist, assisted by Jessi Teevan. 

Theater critic Charles Spencer in The Daily Telegraph wrote of the production at Trafalgar Studios “It is a beautiful and startling piece, beginning naturalistically before shifting gear into something magical, spiritual and touching.” 

The play premiered on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Sept. 22, 2011, with an official opening on Oct. 13. Samuel L. Jackson made his Broadway debut in the role of Dr. King along with Angela Bassett as his co-star who portrayed Camae.
