Remembering Marion Mallas Golay

Marion Mallas Golay, 86, a lifelong resident of Dunmore, died Sunday morning in Linwood Nursing & Rehab in Scranton. She was the wife of the late George Mallas Jr. who died in 1970 and the late John Golay in 1999. 

Born and raised in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Carey Derrig. Marion was a graduate of Dunmore High School and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore. Prior to retirement she was employed at Specialty Records/ WEA Manufacturing.

Marion was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and was a kind, generous, and sweet woman who always put her family and friend’s needs before herself. She had a tremendous love of animals, especially her cats and dogs over the years. She was an avid fan of Dunmore Football and prior to her illness would attend nearly every game. Her greatest joy came when spending time with family during holidays and gatherings. She looked forward to these times as she would prepare food and gifts. She truly cherished these moments.

Her family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the compassion as well as Jerry and staff at In Home Personal Care for all the years of wonderful care.

Surviving is her son, George M. Mallas and his wife Mary, Roaring Brook Twp., a granddaughter which was her pride and joy, Devan Mallas and her companion Brenden Wahl, Old Forge, her twin sister, Katherine “Kay” Farris, Dunmore, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Mary Alice Mallas, a brother Patrick Derrig and two sisters, Alice Gregorski and Joan Froese.

The funeral will be Friday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street in Dunmore.

Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
