Dempsey Enters Race for Lackawanna County Judge

Atty. Mary Walsh Dempsey of Scranton has announced her intention to run for an upcoming vacancy on the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas in the May Primary Election.

Dempsey, who currently serves as Senior Litigation Counsel for Ufberg and Associates in Scranton, has practiced law in Lackawanna County full time for the past 30 years. Her three-decade legal career includes extensive experience in civil law, both in state and federal courtrooms, and experience in criminal law.

“Over the past 30 years, I have represented thousands of individual clients with passion, tenacity, intellect, integrity and the utmost respect for the law.  I am proud to put my experience, my vast legal knowledge and my strong sense of community on the ballot in May as a candidate for Lackawanna County Judge.”

Dempsey just recently completed a one-year term as the President of the Lackawanna Bar Association, and she was selected to fill a five-month vacancy as a Scranton City Council member in 2019. She also worked as an Asst. District Attorney in Lackawanna County and still holds several leadership roles in the Pennsylvania Bar Association and other community organizations.

“I have always considered the practice of law to be a calling for me and a way for me to serve others. Presiding as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas presents yet another opportunity for me to use my proven, and time-tested legal skills, to serve a community that has historically placed its trust in me.” Dempsey added “I know that I will maintain independence and that I will apply the rule of law to the facts of the case in all matters.  I will also uphold decorum, effectively maintain judicial temperament, and just as important, I will be tough and tenacious when needed.”

Mary Walsh Dempsey resides in Scranton with her four children. She is a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School, The University of Scranton, and the Dickinson School of Law.

She will run for the seat on the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas that will be vacated upon the impending retirement of Judge Thomas Munley. The Primary Election will be held May 18, 2021.
