John J. Earley, 92, passed away at his home in Dunmore on September 25th. The son of the late Anthony and Anna Dempsey Earley, he and his wife, Ann Marie, had been married for 72 years at the time of her death in April of this year. 

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church and had great devotion to St. Ann. He and his wife made the Monday devotion at Saint Ann’s Monastery/Basilica for more than seven decades. 

He is survived by his children, Marianne and husband, Nick Pokoluk, Kathleen Barrett, Jack and wife, Rosie, and Tim and wife, Margee, grandchildren, Megan, Nick, Jennifer, Michael, Erin, Rory, Amy, Jackie, Molly, Katie, Tim, John, Michael, Eamon, and great-grandchildren, Ella, Lily, Dimity, Ben, Maggie, Caitlin, Rhiannon, Megan, Cilian, Aiobhan, Conor, Grace, Riley, Tommy, Cooper, Jack, Henry, Maeve, Caleb, Jack, and Connor. 

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Patrick, brothers, James and Anthony, and sisters, Mary, Ann, and Regina. Services will be private.

Remembering Rosemarie Mecca

Rosemarie Mecca, 83, of Dunmore, died Thursday afternoon in Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Scranton, dedicated and loving daughter of the late Donato and Elizabeth “Elsie” Wasco Mecca, she was a graduate of Dunmore High School and was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore.  Prior to her retirement, she had been employed with Pennsylvania Gas and Water as an office administrator and representative.  Rosemarie was always on the go, whether it be as a member of The Friends of the Scranton Public Library, or when she was out to enjoy the Broadway Theater League and Philharmonic at the Scranton Cultural Center.  She loved fashion, and without fail, would be dressed to the nines for any and all occasions.

She is survived by her friends, Robert Holtham, Dolly Gallagher, and James Gallagher.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph M. “Scappy” Mecca in 2017.

A private burial service will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Dunmore and a memorial mass will be held at a later date.

Remembering Irene Lubneski

Irene Lubneski, 102, died peacefully at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing where she happily resided for the past eight years. 

She was born in Scranton on December 26, 1917.  She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Chipalouskas Greblunas and the widow of Michael L. Lubneski. 

Educated in Scranton public schools, she worked as a seamstress and was a member of ILGWU.  Irene was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore.  She enjoyed dining out, polka dancing, Canada trips in the summer and winter vacations in Florida. 

Irene is survived by her daughter, Sandra Capooci; four grandsons, Victor (Evelyn), Michael, Matthew (Kathleen), and Mark (Tracey); nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and four devoted nieces.  

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Scott and Edward Greblunas, two sisters, Lillian Klimitis and Margaret Oldakowski, nephew, Richard Klimitis and her son-in-law, Victor J. Capooci.

Heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home for the wonderful loving care she received by everyone, to Dr. Robert Kaville, her attending physician, and a special thank you to Tom Possinger who always made her smile.  She was very content living at the Villa. 

Private funeral services will be held with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Dunmore.  Interment in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. 

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home, 516 St. Mary’s Villa Road, Elmhurst Township, PA 18444.
