Camp Healing Hearts is a five-day camp experience sponsored by Hospice of the Sacred Heart to provide grief education and arts to children ages 8 to 14 who have experienced the death of a loved one. The camp will be held Aug. 10-14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Some online instruction will originate from Hospice of the Sacred Heart Center for Education, 340 Montage Mountain Road, Moosic.
Children work with trained bereavement counselors and members of the regional arts community to help them progress towards acceptance of the loss and use the arts as a means of self-expression. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 2020 Camp Healing Hearts will be conducted safely via Zoom Video Conferencing.
This year’s five-day camp is made up of two back-to-back 45-minute instructional sessions each day to provide a sense of routine, consistency and ultimately closure for the entire process. Each session utilizes a different theme explored through the arts. Bereavement counselors will be available throughout the week if any campers or family members require individual support.
“We were committed to conduct this camp in a safe and meaningful way in the midst of the current COVID-19 Pandemic. It remains one of the most impactful and sacred youth programs we offer,” said Diane Baldi, Chief Executive Officer, Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
Community volunteers lend their time and talents to campers with artistic projects culminating this year in a video retrospect, which will be presented before the feature film at the Circle Drive-In, 1911 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Dickson City, on a date to be determined in late August.
The camp schedule for the week follows: Monday, Aug. 10, Photography with Julie Jordan and Yoga with Hilary Steinberg; Tuesday, Aug. 11, Pizza Making with Brenda Bistocchi and Cupcake Decorating with Sara Grande; Wednesday, Aug. 12, Singing and Dancing with Joanne Arduino and Michele Conaboy McGrath and Writing with Lisa Bath; Thursday, Aug. 13, Singing and Dancing with Joanne Arduino and Michele Conaboy McGrath and Painting with Katharine Schkloven; Friday, Aug. 14, Singing and Dancing with Joanne Arduino and Michele Conaboy McGrath and Photography with Julie Jordan.
