Celebrating John Mitchell Day

John Mitchell Day

A John Mitchell Day Ceremony and Man of the Year was held recently at Cathedral Cemetery.  Mitchell was the great labor leader who fought for an eight-hour work day, minimum wage, and safety standards in the mines, which were all parts of the agreement which ended the Great Anthracite Strike of 1902.

The AOH Hook O’Malley Division 4 has been celebrating John Mitchell Day for the past 14 years.  Jerry Murray, AOH member, member of the Scranton Federation of Teachers, and Clarks Summit resident, was awarded Man of the Year for his past dedication to the Union and his community.
