Anxiety Screenings at Marywood:

Marywood University’s Psychological Services Center will offer free, confidential anxiety screenings on Thursday, April 6, from 9 a.m. –7 p.m., in the McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, on the University’s campus. The free screenings are open to the public and to all ages.

The anxiety screenings at Marywood University will include an educational presentation and written self-test, a private meeting with a mental health professions, and, if appropriate, a referral. YMCA Healthy Kids Day:

The Greater Scranton & Wilkes-Barre Family YMCAs are holding free community events at each of their facilities on Saturday, April 29, to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. This year marks the 26th annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.

YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at over 1,300 Ys across the country by over 1.2 million participants, works to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they continue all summer long, which is a critical time for kids’ health.

LRCA RiverFest:

The LRCA’s “Regional Rite of Spring” RiverFest, Saturday May 13, will celebrate its 30 year anniversary with a Canoe-A-Thon, Regatta and Duck-A-Thon. There will also be two instructional Kayak Excursions in the afternoon.

Music, refreshments, craft vendors, environmental & educational displays, kids activities, demonstrations and much more will be ongoing throughout the afternoon. For information or registration, call (570) 347-6311 or email lrca@lrca.org.

MFA Open House:

Marywood University’s master of fine arts program for designers and illustrators, “Get Your Master’s with the Masters,” will hold an open house on Friday, April 21,, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., in the Shields Center for Visual Arts, Room 136. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with faculty, take a tour of the facility, and attend talks given by industry leaders.

The “Get Your Master’s with the Masters” MFA program at Marywood University is a low-residency program designed specifically for working professionals: art directors, graphic designers, illustrators, educators, and other artists who have to budget their time and resources carefully, while continuing their full-time occupations.

Meatless Dinner

The sixth annual Meatless Meal for Lent sponsored by SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, will be held on  Friday, April 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.At the Regal Room, (Ballroom/side entrance) 216 Lackawanna Ave., Olyphant. Tickets are $13 per dinner for sitdown or take-out. Menu is baked haddock, potato, vegetable, cole slaw, roll and dessert. Call (570) 383-9587 for reservations. A limited amount of dinners will be available at the door for $15.

 

Ballet Theatre Presents: Dracula

The Ballet Theatre of Scranton present International Choreographer Arkadiy Orohovsky’s haunting love story, Dracula, on Saturday, April 29 at 7:30 pm at the Theater at North.   Under Artistic Director Joanne Arduino of Dunmore, Ballet Theatre’s Senior Company will move your heart and capture your soul as they relay the true and tragic tale based on the Bram Stoker novel.

Irish Cultural Exhibit

Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick M. O’Malley, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. Cummings are sponsoring a unique exhibit and panel honoring Irish Culture. The Face of Irish Music: Photographs by Robin Hiteshew opens on First Friday, April 7, at the Lackawanna County Government Center at The Globe, Wyoming Avenue, Scranton, from 5 – 8 p.m.  Mr. Hiteshew will be in attendance along with the Sligo-style music of renowned fiddle player Brian Conway, who is featured in one of the portraits.      

On Saturday, April 8, from 11 a.m. – noon at the Government Center a panel on Dancing in the Kitchen: The Role of Music in Irish and Irish American Culture will examine how traditional Irish music has shaped the identity and culture in Ireland and the United States. Distinguished panelists include: photographer Robin Hiteshew, musician Brian Conway, poet John E. McGuigan, and cultural anthropologist Dori Panzer.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Community Concerts Presents: Postmodern Jukebox

Back by popular demand and following an extensive world tour, Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox will return to the Community Concerts’ stage on Saturday, May 13, at 8 p.m.

The electrifying live show will be presented The Peoples Security Bank Theater at Lackawanna College after having previously performed at the Theater in 2015. For the uninitiated, Postmodern Jukebox is a genre-busting, rotating collective of performers who have built a massive following by reimagining modern pop hits with a vintage twist. Postmodern Jukebox crosses musical boundaries and generations with their distinct take on songs originated by artists ranging from Lady Gaga and The Strokes to Katy Perry and the White Stripes.
